  1. Regardless of whether it took a doner with money, a threat to sue TN. And or reselling the Billikens to Yuri. It had to happen fast. If it took more than coaching persuasion, it required multiple layers of SLU To approve. Something that hasn't happened quickly in the past, to the benefit of the team. If Ford didn't want Yuri back, he wouldn't be back. Regardless of how it works out management successfully pulled Yuri out of the fire and the Bills are back in the top 25 talk. We are in uncharted waters, but at this moment, the Bills are in the game. Management had a choice, be a victim or take action. I think they deserve credit for taking action.

  2. You guys are wild. We just ponied up to keep Yuri -- which seems like a good thing for our program in terms of NIL? If you want to worry about 2 years from now, today, when no one has any idea how NIL will play-out long-term, if the immediate transfer rule will still be around, how the team will perform the next 2 season, how our recruits will develop, etc., etc., that tells me you are just looking for reasons to bum yourself out. Sounds terrible.

  3. Good for Demarco Polo for signing with SIUE. It sounds like he's found himself.

  4. Schmidt is Bona. They were nothing before he got there. They've had 4 NCAA tournament appearances in the last 40 years. He has 3 of them. Even if it takes another 4 years for him to get back, it's better than the alternative.

  5. taking advantage of the rules is one thing. showing disrespect to the fans, the school, your teamates, and the coaches the way he handled such is another. no excuse for that.

  8. There was too much blood sweat and tears invested by Team Blue to let Yuri go without a fight. We still don't know what deal was struck to keep him here. We may never know. What I do know is bidding on your stars to keep them is not a sustainable model for building a program at our level. It's hard enough to sign players who can compete against P5 talent in the first place.

  10. I think what you are seeing here is the difference between a celebrity tech billionaire (Zuckerberg, Bezos, etc.) and non-celebrity billionaire (Jack Dorsey). It doesn't necessarily mean Dorsey is less philanthropic. It just means that he gets less attention for it.

  11. I'm pretty sure he and Jim McKelvey are a big reason the Cortex development went through. They also committed a ton of money to building a major office for Square here. And donated a ton of money to Missouri teachers a few years back. I wouldn't say he's done nothing for St. Louis. Could he do more? Sure, but there are quite a few uber rich people from St. Louis that do much less.

  16. I wonder if there's a small part of Schmidt that now regrets not taking the UMass job. Bona just doesn't seem like the type of program that can sustain success in this new era of NIL and the portal.

  18. We always play fast to start the year, and typically play very well as we do. Then, inevitably, when a good team shows that they’re able to play with us a bit, we panic and slow down, usually to our own detriment. And from then on, Ford settles into his 7 or 8 man rotation. we have had some players that would’ve thrived in a run and gun style offense (Demarius Jacobs, Strickland immediately come to mind) who were totally wasted when we constantly slowed down into half court sets.

  19. i think he is more right than wrong. i dont like at all the way this was handled by yuri. i would be very disappointed if slu boosters had to pay big dollars to get him back. but i also recognize he is one of the best point guards in billiken history and the chances of replacing him from the portal or one of our other players that will be on the roster next year at his level is next to nothing. i.e. if we want to be good, we needed his return to happen. is the team chemistry still ok? will the return guarantee the good results we all think could happen? who knows. but i think the billikens were in a bad spot and had no choice if they wanted a shot at what has been building to come to fruition. but i totally understand old guy's thinking and stance. i just wont go to the extreme of wishing he wasnt back assuming he was indeed bribed to stay. i am not a good russian roulette player and i doubt coach ford wanted to play such either. we did what had to be done to have a shot at winning big.

  20. We have to navigate this off-season plus two more off-seasons before the Extra Covid Year runs out. Once it is gone, minutes will open up again for underclassmen. I'd think that the transfers would go down accordingly. The 23-24 off-season likely will be the same scramble. But as the numbers of Extra Year Players start to slim down, let's hope the mad dash to the portal cools off a bit. It will also be interesting to see how or if the NCAA considers players with multiple transfers. This was originally labeled as a One Time Transfer rule. But as we have seen this before, all you need was a pulse for the NCAA to grant waivers. With new blood coming into the NCAA head shed, which way will waiver handouts go? [Perhaps players will be able to transfer at half time of a given game, playing one half for each team.]

  21. He's probably still at Wake this morning, guessing he's headed back north today. It's weird how quiet it's been - there was the 336 Edits tweet that got like 5 replies from Wake fans, and that's the only chatter I saw anywhere. No articles, no other posts. He has been quiet on social media for a few days. Maybe we'll see some activity today around that visit. Regardless, I'd bet he commits pretty soon. Maybe takes today to get home and talk it over with the family, then we see something official tomorrow. Just a hunch based on how this has gone. The only way this gets delayed is if another school gets involved today.

  24. Lived in a couple NBA cities (actually 3 including St. Louis since I remember the St. Louis Hawks and when they beat Boston for the NBA title). Worked at Kiel Auditorium before they moved to Atlanta. When we were in Seattle area they had the Sonics. Remember a game we saw there when they played the 76ers, and my family cheered when Larry Hughes scored. Fan in front of us turned and said Saint Louis U and we said you bet. We lived in South Florida when LBJ played for the Heat, and won two NBA titles. Still root for the Heat, and hope they have a run at another NBA title this year.

  25. The arena doesn’t matter. Lindenwood will be a brand new D-1 team in one of the lowest level conferences in the D-1. SIU-E did the same thing like 10-15 years ago and they haven’t improved their position at all. Lindenwood isn’t going to be taking NIL dollars away from SLU any time soon. I’d be more worried about Lindenwood poaching Rammer, an alumnus, than I would worry about them getting NIL dollars.

  28. -the only comparison I see between Chaifetz and Family Arena is both have roofs, seats and parking issues -no doubt we have advantages being in a major market, however there are many alumni bases significantly represented in C-suites around St Louis, I hope the SLU folks are getting approached to support NIL and The U not expecting them to come to the NIL -one advantage a college town could have over us is in many cases the school is the focus of the area which could lead to more businesses being aware of the school and willing to support NIL's -again, I don't expect Dr Chaifetz and a few others to foot the bill for all things SLU athletics

  29. I didn't say anything about there not being good big men. But if you want to see master classes in low post play in addition to great perimeter play, this ain't the era. Once less talented teams began beating us in international competition with the three ball, the current pro game was inevitable. I know how we got here, I just don't like the trade off.

  32. On one hand, I think you have a valid point that SLU absolutely should not sleep on Lindenwood competing with them for local $ as a D1 program. They have a number of built in advantages over SLU. On the other hand, calling The Family Arena "Chaifetz Arena's" equal is an absolutely hilariously absurd take. Have you been to both? The capacity for basketball is similar, but that's about the only thing they are equal in. Chaifetz is better in just about every other way. Not to mention SLU owns Chaifetz and it is on campus whereas The Family Arena is owned by St Charles County and is a few miles from campus. You'd think being close, but not on campus wouldn't matter much, but it pretty clearly did for SLU at Kiel/Saavis.

  33. I think I understand what you are asking. And, SLU is doing well with Academy recruiting. But keep in mind, there are plenty of successful examples with a wide variety of backgrounds. Isaiah Parker wasn’t on everyone’s radar when SLU first started recruiting him, landed him, developed him, and helped him become one of the best Freshman in the country this past season. And, he of course signed a Generation Adidas deal after that. He was perhaps known more for his his wrestling accolades in some circles. That of course worked out well for Parker and SLU. SLU has some long term relationships with a few of his club coaches. And, now SLU has an additional 2022 Left Back recruit from the same club, Kevin Rivera. SLU recently targeted a two sport athlete from Minnesota, who joined Minnesota United, did well, began training up with their first team, and later signed a deal with them. Meteoric rise. Other players are more obvious MLS Next Academy standouts that may never make it to a campus. With some others, SLU competes with Indiana or Notre Dame or UCLA or whomever. Others, i will see play and say this kid can play and I have no idea why he isn’t playing academy or being more highly recruited. In the new example here, SLU had been recruiting Dougherty a long time, well before he was on the radar of some others. A large part of recruiting is identifying talent, preferably early on, building long term mutual interest relationships, closing for a player, It’s also timing, and even some luck too in some situations. Locally, Seth Anderson, Donny Ross etc didn’t play Academy ball, but they can play. Ross’ cousins played Academy at times, non Academy at times, even went back and forth, so that can happen as well. I can assure you future Billiken Tanner Anderson can play. Matteo Boasso plays Academy ball at SLSG, and, he can play too. Marcos Moore is an Academy player in Houston at Rise. And so on. It varies. One thing you will also see is a few redshirted players from last year that step right in and contribute more than you may think. They are ready to go. That’s part of the player development and depth with recruiting. Transfers too. Alberto Suarez is a good Center Back. Lane Warrington will play a lot of right back etc.. Chandler Vaughn was stuck on the bench at Pittsburgh before transferring to SLU. Simon Becher played at Holy Cross before SLU. Kipp Keller wasn’t always a big strong 6’2 Center Back. Another player such as Patrick Schulte was a well known stud for years. So it varies. All that matters is getting players that fit at SLU, developing them, having success at SLU and having them continue that after SLU. So it’s a mix and a variety that has been successful, of geography, type of club team, etc…it’s pretty fun. The rolodex of names and connections that Kalish, Berstch, Stoll have is vast, far and wide. Resources are important too. Budget. Travel, Facilities. Success to sell etc… SLU’s on field success has also helped get SLU visits, conversations, etc with some that hadn’t before. I like where SLU is at with recruiting right now. Hopefully it keeps getting better and better. It is a daily grind. The work that goes into for both the Men and Women’s programs is a lot. …………………. Women’s Soccer is a little bit different and has its own sets of challenges with recruiting. Similarities and differences. There’s been a lot going on with that this past week so I can probably post something separately in their thread.

  37. I wouldn't dismiss Lindenwood. Of the three D1 schools in the region, they have football and will use it to their advantage. St. Charles is growing every year. Not to mention they have the family arena nearby that is Chaifetz Arena's equal.
