  1. From the GW Board: Not a lot to say other than the fact that I look at this SLU team and become completely envious that this can't be us. This program graduated two of its best players in Goodwin and French, and then loses its best returning scorer in Perkins before the season starts. If ever there was a reason for a school to lick its wounds, it was this year's SLU team. Instead, it goes out in the OOC and had the #1 ranked team in the nation on the ropes before losing. They have an amazing point guard who looks to score only when the opportunity is clear; otherwise, he excels at his first priority which is to get his teammates the ball in the best position for them to score. They have a sharpshooter who knows how to slip defenses and whose teammates always seem to find him open for a three point shot. They have a freshman who is incredibly athletic. They have a low post player who is tenacious on the boards, and backup bigs who know how to play. They make their free throws. They play really hard and really smart basketball. They are not perfect as evidenced by a much higher than desirable number of "easy" missed baskets. And yes, they are extremely well coached. They play with a desire, enthusiasm and aggressiveness that is set by Travis Ford and his staff. Hard to shed too many tears losing to a team that we're not nearly as good as.

  2. The same 4-5 people start it every time. Put them on ignore (except to hit options - show this post and give them a troll rating from time to time). As for Williams, I don't get the anxiety over him. He's a volume shooter, period. He needs minutes to show his value. He's starting to get more and I don't mind him going 0-3 or 1-4 until he starts clicking. If he figures it out, he could be a valuable piece down the stretch. If not, we were never really depending on him for major production (admittedly, Perkins going down changed the math a bit, but still). We need some combination of Hargrove to get back on track, Williams finding his shot, Nesbitt taking a step, Collins finding some of the 3-pointer he flashed for a while this season, or Jones to start shooting more. We're going to run into good defenses again soon and they're going to try to take away the 3-point line from Jimerson. He's still going to score, as he's demonstrated, but we need other guys to be legit threats from the perimeter or teams can just pack it in against us like they did when the offense ran through Goodwin and French.

  3. If McCall got to play in Ford's offense with the shooters we have, he would be very high on this list. I think he's maybe the most underrated billiken of my fandom (post-2000ish)

  6. So what happened between 2018-19 and 2019-20? The NCAA moved the 3 pt line back...Williams was never able to make the change.

  7. The Williams thing is a bit of a mystery. Tate really talked him up prior to the start of the season, so I was expecting more. Maybe it was wishful thinking. Clearly Ford had a different take with his lack of playing time from the start of the season. I wonder if there was a bit of an injury early and now Ford is trying to get him to shake off some rust and hopefully start contributing something. I like the idea of at least giving him a few minutes in the first half of games - IF he ever gets hot, then you can ride it a bit. The problem is he has never gotten hot yet. Based on some of his explosive performances against decent teams in the past, there has to be some ability there. He certainly looked good in those highlights. I have no problem with the way Ford is using him now. Let him chuck up a few and see if it starts to click.

  8. You're evaluating Williams based on seeing the worst of him. Well, we've got a couple weeks against mostly weak competition to see if the best of him can emerge. An extra shooter who can create his own shot would come in handy when we face the better defensive teams in the conference. And any player who isn't getting minutes can choose to be "gone". There's always going to be four players who don't get minutes who have a decision to make. If you think guys are dissatisfied with their minutes now, just wait until Perkins comes back.

  9. That's fair, but I don't think Williams has once looked the part and every time he's in the game he chucks it up like's Gibson Jimerson or something. Strickland at least could potentially have a future here and I'm much more interested in what he can do with some minutes than Williams.

  11. If we aren't calling Jett a PG, I'm not sure how we can call Kwam or McCall PGs either. Jett actually finished his career with the most assists of that trio. He had 422, Kwam had 420 (in the fewest games), and McCall 339. If we had to pick a primary ball hander, I'd say that each had a year or more that they fit the description. Kwam was probably the guy his first 3 years, McCall his freshman year, and Jett his senior year. Interesting thing about the really good Majerus teams is that they did not have a true PG, but had those 3 combo guards / guys who could handle the ball & run the offense (I'd add Cassity as another guy who could run things, but without the same scoring ability). It made our offense more dynamic / harder to defend to have those 3 guys who could run the offense / handle the ball. Contrast that with our team today. If you have a solid plan to disrupt Yuri (easier said than done), things can grind to a halt even though I think we have more offensive talent on the current team.

  12. Seems to be more to it...he isn't starting..minutes are down ..Dad is tweeting about Ford and even tweeted the staff are concerned he has gained weight etc. Not sure it is a quick fix. As Roy said a kid filled with fun and joy has lost that.

  17. So what's the point of playing him. He is a grad transfer so he's gone. Do we need another short guard who doesn't defend all that well. Baring injury or foul trouble who's minutes do you want him to take?

  18. My issue with Williams is why play him in that type of game instead of Strickland who still has 3+ years of eligibility? Unless Strickland just isn't very good.

  22. Williams has played in 11 games and is averaging 9 min per game. 8/33 from 3 - 7/23 before his 1/10 over the last 2 games so it isn’t just 2 poor games. He has 2 f/t on the year in 99 min. With 9 assists and 6 t/o’s. No one is giving up on him after 2 bad games. He’s been bad every time he steps on the floor

  24. In my mind, unless it is a local guy willing to sit like Russell did, I think this is low on the list for recruiting purposes. Nesbitt has shown he is capable of running the offense when Yuri sits, similar to how Goodwin did, and he will only get better at it. A guy like Rob Martin would be a great fit for this, but why would he be willing to sit? Plus numbers wise, guys would have to leave for it to happen.

  32. Javonte Perkins fits that role better than any guy in the juco top 25. I wholeheartedly support our staff bringing in athletic 6'6/6'7 scorers, getting them in the weight room and calling it a day. It worked for Shaka Smart at VCU for years.

  34. Updated through the GW game: DeAndre Jones is shooting .371 from 3, which would be short of the senior top ten - John Duff is tenth with .401. His .938 from the FT line would be an all-time record for a season. He needs to reach 50 attempts to make either list, and he's currently on pace to do so for 3-pointers but not FTs. Francis Okoro is currently .549 from the field, which would be seventh on the junior FG% top ten. His .754 FT% is a bit shy of the .803 needed for junior FT%. He's also on pace to be short of the total rebounding and rebounding average lists. However, he has 26 blocks and only needs one more to tie Kenny Brown for tenth among juniors. Marten Linssen has a FG% of .550, which would put him seventh among juniors. His FT% of .839 would be good for fourth on the junior list. He has 13 blocked shots and needs to get to 27 to tie for tenth to tie Brown, although Okoro is ahead of him and will soon bump Chris Heinrich (28) down to tenth. Rashad Williams is 1.000 from the FT line on 2 attempts and needs 48 more to be in contention for the top ten. Brandon Courtney is not in the mix for any junior records. Fred Thatch is .500 from the field, which would fall a little short of the top ten for sophomores - Kevin Williams is tenth at .509. He has 21 steals and needs to reach 39 (Jordair Jett) to reach the sophomore top ten, so he's a little off the pace he needs. Yuri Collins now has 444 career assists and owns the all-time record, having just passed Josh Fisher (435) in the GW game. He also took the sophomore record, topping LaTodd Johnson's 142 recently - he's at 157 and counting. He has the freshman assist record (171) and his 116 in a shortened season last year ranks sixth among sophomores. His 19 assists vs. BC gave him the all-time single game record, passing Jim Roder's 18. He has 38 steals this season and needs one more to tie Jordair Jett for tenth for sophomores. He has 107 career steals and needs to reach 132 to tie Jamall Walker and LaTodd Johnson in tenth. His FT% of .767 is currently shy of the top ten for sophomores. Terrence Hargrove is shooting .333 from three after his recent cold streak, which dropped him from being in the mix for the top ten among sophomores. He has 9 blocks and needs to get to 19 to tie Tommie Liddell and Matt Baniak on the end of the sophomore top ten list. Gibson Jimerson is averaging 18.4 PPG in his third freshman season, which would put him second behind only Larry Hughes (20.9) for freshman scoring average. He's also on pace to finish second behind Hughes (670) in total points. He's already second in freshman three-point field goal percentage at .429, which is also good for eighth on the all-class list, and his .442 clip this year would take the freshman record, be sixth all-time, and bump his .429 to third and ninth, respectively. His 37 three-pointers last season tied him with Anthony Drejaj and Marcus Bartley for tenth among freshmen, bumped down by his 46 this season, which is already good for fourth. He is also in a 9-way tie for second most 3-pointers in a single game (7), right behind Tommie Liddell's 8, and joined SLU's 30-point scorer club with 31 vs. UMass. His .880 FT% would be a freshman record and fifth overall for a season. Jimerson is 11 made FTs away from qualifying on Career FT% - at his current career percentage of .873, he would be first all-time. Jordan Nesbitt is averaging 9.6 PPG, a little outside the freshman top ten; he needs to reach 11.0 PPG to tie Kwamain Mitchell. He has 183 points and needs 321 to tie Lisch and Milik Yarbrough for ninth among freshmen. His rebounding numbers (4.7 RPG, 89 total) are also short of the pace he needs (5.6 RPG, 162) for the class top ten, as well. His .350 3P% is behind Scott Highmark's tenth place mark of .369. He has 19 steals and needs to hit 33 (Carlos McCauley) for 10th. Lassina Traore has a FG% of .633, which would be a freshman record and second overall if he reached 100 attempts. But he stands at 30, well off pace. His .750 FT% would be 8th for freshmen, but he's at 8 attempts and needs 50. He would also need to play a lot more to be in the mix for any rebounding marks. Markhi Strickland is not in the mix for any freshman records. Andre Lorentsson is a perfect 1.000 from the field in only four field goal attempts. Javonte Perkins is out for the season. After two seasons at SLU, he is tied for 10th all time in scoring average (15.9) with Bill Morris. He has 825 career points and will easily make it into the 1,000-point club if he returns next season. He is sixth all-time for scoring for two-year players. His .866 FT% last season is good for sixth all time in a season and fourth for seniors.

  35. I’d include Jim Roder, who held the single game assist record, which he did in the NIT. Perhaps make the list the Top 15 to include all deserving. While I certainly would include David Burns on this list, LaTodd Johnson played some point guard with David Burns on the floor.

  47. Updated through the Dayton game: Marten Linssen has a FG% of .571, which would put him tied in sixth with Jim Roder for seniors and just outside the all-time top ten. His FT% of .820 is a little outside the top 10 for seniors, needing to get to .832 (Kevin Lisch). He has 12 blocked shots and needs to get to 27 to tie for tenth (Justin Tatum, Jamal Johnson). DeAndre Jones is shooting .400 from 3, which would be just shy of the senior top ten - John Duff is tenth with .401. His .917 from the FT line would be second all-time for a season. He needs to reach 50 attempts to make either list, and he's currently on pace to do so for 3-pointers but not FTs. Francis Okoro is currently .529 from the field, a little short of the junior FG% top ten. His .732 FT% is also a bit shy of the .803 needed for junior FT%. He's also on pace to be short of the total rebounding and rebounding average lists. However, he has 25 blocks through 15 games and only needs to reach 27 blocks to tie Kenny Brown for tenth among juniors. Fred Thatch is .500 from the field, which would fall a little short of the top ten for juniors. He has 17 steals and needs to reach 45 (Anthony Drejaj) to reach the junior top ten, so he's a little off the pace he needs. Rashad Williams is shooting .333 from 3, short of where he needs to be (.385) to tie Lisch and Davell Roby for ninth for juniors. He needs to get to 50 attempts, too. Brandon Courtney is not in the mix for any junior records. Yuri Collins now has 402 career assists and is sixth all-time, having just passed LaTodd Johnson (400). The next guy to pass is Jordan Goodwin (404), likely to happen in the next game. He owns the freshman assist record (171) and his 116 in a shortened season last year are fifth among sophomores. The sophomore record is 142 (Johnson), a mark he should pass easily this season, as he already has 115. His 19 assists vs. BC gave him the all-time single game record, passing Jim Roder's 18. He has 29 steals this season and needs to reach 39 to tie Jordair Jett for tenth for sophomores. His FT% of .769 is currently shy of the top ten for sophomores. Terrence Hargrove is shooting .378 from three, which is on pace to be tenth place among sophomores. He has 9 blocks and needs to get to 19 to tie Tommie Liddell and Matt Baniak on the end of the sophomore top ten list. Gibson Jimerson is averaging 16.5 PPG in his third freshman season, which would put him second behind only Larry Hughes for freshman scoring average. He's also on pace to finish second behind Hughes (670) in total points. He's already second in freshman three-point field goal percentage at .429, which is also good for eighth on the all-class list, and his .387 clip this year would be good for eighth on the freshman list. His 37 three-pointers last season tied him with Anthony Drejaj and Marcus Bartley for ninth among freshmen and he already has 29 this season. His .897 FT% would be a freshman record and third overall for a season. Jordan Nesbitt is averaging 9.9 PPG, a little outside the freshman top ten; he needs to reach 11.0 PPG to tie Kwamain Mitchell. He has 148 points and needs 321 to tie Lisch and Milik Yarbrough for ninth among freshmen. His rebounding numbers (4.5 RPG, 68 total) are also short of the pace he needs (5.6 RPG, 162) for the class top ten, as well. His .340 3P% is behind Scott Highmark's tenth place mark of .369. He has 16 steals and needs to hit 33 (Carlos McCauley) for 10th. Lassina Traore has a FG% of .714, which would be an all-class record for a season if he reached 100 attempts. But he stands at 21, well off pace. He would also need to play a lot more to be in the mix for any rebounding marks. Markhi Strickland is currently .474 from the field, which is short of the top ten for freshmen, but he has the same issue as Traore - 19 FGA. Andre Lorentsson is a perfect 1.000 from the field in only three field goal attempts. Javonte Perkins is out for the season. After two seasons at SLU, he is tied for 10th all time in scoring average (15.9) with Bill Morris. He has 825 career points and will easily make it into the 1,000-point club if he returns next season. His .866 FT% last season is good for sixth all time in a season and fourth for seniors.
