Ford Interview with Kilcoyne

When coach Ford came here he said he came to win championships. That was the vision he painted for the school, his recruis and the fans.  He didn't say that in this interview. He basically said every A10 teams goal is to play in the tournament and the league needs to get back to sending more teams each year to the dance. He said we have a plan to turn this around, though he didn't say what that is, other than to say we didn't do a good job in the portal or NIL. Now he says he understands  both.

I think he loves SLU and St Louis. I think he works as hard or harder than any coach we have had. I wish I believed  that he could get us to the top 1 or 2 in the A10..... but I don't. 

He will get us out of the cellar, but his ceiling is lower.  Because of his track record here, he can't say to recruis, "we are about winning championships". If the administration keeps him we won't get close to the top 2 teams in the A10.  Maybe top half, at best top third. 

If we were Fordham, this would be OK. But SLU has invested way too much to settle for this.

This interview 100% confirms he needs to be fired today. Has a plan now after 8 years? Last month or so figured out how NIL works? Got Covid in there because the SLU mbb team were the only ones affected by that, which was 4 years ago now. The best part was how he said St. Louis is home now, and his eyes watered up. He tells everyone in town when he retires he’s living in Florida, already has a house down there! Wow. 

And the academy award goes too…..Travis Ford! I’ve seen better acting in porno movies. 
 

This confirms that May and Ford are begging for one more year, have a “plan” and just need more $$$. I’d like to think Fred and BoT are smart enough to see through this nonsense…but both of these guys are still employed at SLU now. So maybe jokes on us.

Ford is gone. My bigger concern is that SLU will not move fast enough in actually hiring a coach. Whether its a formal hire or an under the table agreement, SLU should have someone on board working the portal and getting NIL donations within a few days of moving on from Ford. If not you're just another year behind.

Travis clearly cares a lot about the school and the city. Love the way that he bought in and truly cares about the community. With that said, college basketball is a tough business that's all about results. Results haven't been where they need to be and SLU has given him more than enough time to try to get those results. Nothing personal, but his time is here and there's no other option at this point.

When he says he now understands how to use the portal and NIL and that he now has a plan then I want to know if he is willing to give a substantial part of his salary back given he didn't have a plan nor bothered to learn how to use the portal and NIL effectively.  When I was working, I was expected to be ahead of the game and not be sitting back and waiting.  You get caught with your pants down then you have to pay for it.

He loves the school and city so much, it's his kid's home what about a home town discount.

The more I listen to this guy the more I dislike him. He's completely full of sh+t.  If you don't see that you're a sucker.

I read an article about DePaul and Ohio St firing their coaches in season. The reason cited was to hit the ground running come early March in hiring their new coach to give them a head start on mining  the portal. The article also cited that a few other schools may follow their lead but mentioned no names. Now if SLU takes its sweet time to replace Travis we may find ourselves at the end of the buffet line to pick over the scraps. If the decision has been made that Ford’s gone I  don’t see a good reason to keep him around thru season’s end. It would serve notice to the coaching community that we’re definitely on the hunt. Who knows it might cause a guy like Mack to express some interest. It might even get active coaches to give us a call. I doubt coaches would make these type of calls while Ford’s still employed where his firing is pure speculation. My big fear with our admin is they’ll take their time to make any decision on Ford, ie we’re reviewing it. And then take more time looking for his replacement. We’ve got to act quicker than that. First, to figure out who on our roster will stay or will enter the portal. Roster construction is important, duh, and will take a new guy some time to figure it out. The current admin doesn’t fill me with confidence they’ll do whatever’s necessary to land us a promising HC.

the above is extracted from Ford's comment in the Kilcoyne interview.......I'm done blaming the A10 for lack of teams in the dance.  Each team is responsible for their OOC scheduling (including multi-team events) and how they perform.   We're in the A10 until we can consistently dominate the A10.  Even if Dayton and VCU left the conference, I believe CF would struggle to win the A10.

I was chatting with an old dude at the baseball game Friday.  He was clearly a wealthy alum retired, living in the Port Charlotte area.  He didn't stay for much of the game, but Coach Hendrickson acknowledged him when he walked by pre-game.   He told me a couple of things that were disturbing.  He said he had one of his buddies lined up to make a $500,000 donation recently for naming rights to our baseball complex, the same amount donated for the soccer field naming rights.   Chris May apparently flat turned him down and said it would require a lot more now.   We could probably get some damn good turf for that price.    He also told me unrelatedly that Ford would definitely not be fired this year.    He would be allowed one more year.  I hope this guy was talking out of his butt.....

Yeah this worries me because these interviews aren't for the big money donors they get info direct. This is for the hoi polloi so he can win you over.  Look at me, I love t-ravs so much and the Cardinals please be nice and let me be your coach.

From what I understand this is an oversimplification of the story. I'm not totally privy to the actual story, talking with some alumni it sounds like this one wasn't on May or SLU.

Yeah, you might be right.   I really wanted to get some more info from the dude but he didn't stay very long.  He was pretty confident on the Ford info, so that made me sick to my stomach...

I won’t believe he’s fired until I see the press release.  There are way too many people who think it’s a foregone conclusion.  They are too cheap to pay the buyout.

All of this is true.  And that's a reason to fire mid season.  Also, firing a coach can put a spark in a team.  See the blues(twice), heck OSU fired their coach and immediately beat Purdue. 

Coaches are looking at their next job in season - even thought most will say that's not true. Need to get a jump on this.

If Ford gets another year, I think that’ll be the thing that finally causes a lot of fans to walk away. He took over a program that was in the basement, never reached the top floor, and now is back in the basement. It’s painfully obvious he isn’t the answer, and I really hope no one falls for the excuses he spouted during that segment.

If Ford and/or May are getting fired, only a couple of donor families are going to know that for sure at this point.  Maybe a few select other people would know, but it would be an extremely small circle at this point.  It wouldn’t include the AD. Either one family or both families will be paying the bulk of the buyout/buyouts and coughing up the money for the replacement.

Just to remind everyone, the BoT (outside of one member) didn't know anything about Brad getting fired until it was posted on here.  Doubt the circle will be that small when the announcement is made this time, but the circle will be really small if the decision has been made at this point.

Loves the school so much none of his kids go there and loves living in St. Louis so much he spends most of his free time at his home in Florida. 100% a con man and he totally played May and Fred like fiddles.
