  4. Sorry if starting a new thread is a problem for anybody but when looking at which of a number of threads that contain good Billiken recruiting info was the place for this post, it didn't appear that any of those threads were the MOST appropriate. Today is a big day for the future of Billiken basketball. The closest I can remember is the evening that Monroe and Roland committed together on local TV in Grawer's 2nd or 3rd year. Over the past couple of years (since TF has been recruiting for the home team) I have suggested that we should be able to become a highly successful, yet small school program, like Gonzaga, Xavier, Creighton, Butler or even Nova. We have facilities and local talent comparable to those schools and now have a HC who seems to have the skill required to recruit big-time players. Maybe not the Top 10-20 ranked players who are going to Duke, KU or Kentucky, but that's ok since many of those players will be one-and-done's. One of the things needed for TF to recruit at the X or Nova level is the ability to attract top level (# 20 to #75 or #100) recruits, especially the top players coming out of the STL area. For that to happen SLU needs to be THE school (basketball program) for most of the local recruits. Once that snowball starts rolling downhill it will be hard to stop. Remember we are the only school that can claim to be St. Louis' home team. That's quite an advantage when you consider that Nova is surrounded closely by a number top programs and even Xavier has to deal with Cincinnati and Dayton in addition to multiple D 1 state (OH, IN and KY) schools within 100-150 miles. We only have 2 of those, MU and Illinois, to compete with. Hopefully, with all the recruiting news, today is the start of SLU moving into that group of MBB programs. My main concern is that two of the best local HS seniors this coming year will likely be signing LOI's before this upcoming season starts. This 2021 incoming class is critical to keeping our momentum. They need to be convinced about that momentum. This is the class that needs to fill the scholarship slots of a 3 person senior group that might be the best 3-person graduating class in SLU history. If we are going to continue to build this into a top 25 program that goes to the Dance every year, this November 2020 group of LOI's is maybe the most important ever. Go get 'em TF and staff.

  5. He was a rotation big as a sophomore for at top 15 team filled with 4 star players. You have to be a pretty good player to even break into Oregon's rotation. You move him to a mid-major conference where he's the most athletic big and he's going to be a problem.

  6. Female ballers in the 21st century want to be accepted as competitors like their male counterparts. Hence the preference to be referred to as women, rather than ladies, which has a softer connotation. But I've never gotten a negative reaction when I've called them ladies off the court. It's all about context. I can understand the frustration of older guys who long for a simpler lexicon that rarely changed but those days ain't coming back.

  7. I grew up in a time when calling someone a lady was a compliment, when did it become offensive?

  8. I don't think most posters were saying that calling someone a Lady is "politically incorrect", or that there is anything wrong with those team names you referenced. They were simply saying that our team prefers not to be called the Lady Billikens and as we are all fans of their team, calling them what they like to be called is the preferred thing to do. My name is Nathaniel/Nate. I prefer not to be called Nathan. If you called me Nathan, it wouldn't be politically incorrect, but it also wouldn't be my preference.

  11. I go back and forth on the issue but I believe the issue is not the word lady. It’s the separation of them based on being female. They are all Billikens, their is no differentiation. I was literally just making a Big Lebowski joke.

  13. The stupidity of this thread is a direct result of not killing the corona virus thread at birth. It’s pretty much the same thing that happened with the off-season board back in the olden days. Well done moderators and all who lack the self control to keep this board apolitical........

  16. I hesitate to ask this question because I understand that it is not going to go anywhere. I'm going to go for it though. I'm also going to make an assumption that when you say they'll always be the lady Billikens, you also mean that you will always refer to them as the lady Billikens. Why will you always refer to them as the lady Billikens? Is it that difficult to switch? Given your level of involvement / interest in SLU athletics, I have to assume that you are aware that "lady" Billikens is not the preferred title. Therefore, it seems like you're either saying that "lady" is somehow too ingrained within your mind to adapt yourself or you just don't care what they prefer to be called presumably because you don't see anything wrong with it. If that is the case, I have to ask, why not just call them what they want to be called even if you don't see why that is the case? You aren't deriving any benefit from calling them the lady Billikens as opposed to the women Billkens (I like to go with WBBillikens on here because I think it is easier to type, but I understand your distaste for initials). Speaking of the initials thing, I believe part of your argument on not using them involves showing respect for the players by using their names (could be off on that, I don't want to put words in your mouth more than I already am). Shouldn't we show similar respect for the women's team by not referring to them as something they don't want to be called? Further, a lot of people on here (not sure about you in particular) get worked up when media uses St Louis University instead of Saint Louis University. Isn't that pretty much the same thing? The University wants Saint Louis, but media has St Louis too ingrained or doesn't see the difference. Another flawed example: let's say my full legal name is Michael, but you knew me as a kid and always referred to me an Mikey. Now that I'm an adult I go by Michael and dislike being called Mikey. If I asked you to call me Michael instead of Mikey, why would you continue to call me Mikey? /end rant.

  19. ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis head coach Travis Ford announced today that forward Andre Lorentsson has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University and play for the Billikens. Lorentsson begins his four years of eligibility in the 2020-21 season. "We are very excited about Andre joining our Team Blue family," Ford said. "He is a high-level shooter with great size who can play multiple positions. Andre's high basketball IQ translates to him having tremendous perimeter skills. He is a really good passer and is great with the ball in his hands." "First and foremost, I want to thank my family for always being there for me, supporting me and always telling me to dream big," Lorentsson said. "Thank you also to my teammates and coaches for being such huge factors in my development as a player and a person. I am extremely excited for the opportunity to become a member of Team Blue and play in the A-10. I cannot wait to play in Chaifetz Arena in front of all the great Billiken fans." Lorentsson is a native of Gothenburg, Sweden. His high school team, RIG Mark Kinna, competed in the National Prep School Invitational in Rhode Island in January and posted a 2-1 record. Lorentsson, a stretch four, averaged 20 ppg in the NPSI, with a large portion of his scoring coming from beyond the arc. In 15 games with RIG Mark Kinna last year, Lorentsson averaged 17.7 ppg on 55 percent shooting from the field, including a 45 percent (44-97) mark from 3-point range. He averaged more than 6.0 rebounds per game while dishing out better than 3.0 assists per game. Lorentsson was an 85 percent shooter from the free-throw line. Lorentsson has also spent time with the Swedish National Team, playing for his home country in the U16 European Championship (2017) and the U18 European Championship (2018).

  22. Me thinks this board cares or is more offended than the ladies/females/women themselves would be/are I spoke with Coach Stone numerous times, we talked about me going to the ladies games once in awhile. I referred to them as ladies. She seemed ok with it and we continued on with a nice pleasant conversation. With that said if I knew they preferred women's basketball, I would try to get in the habit of saying women's basketball. For some it's not intentional but it's hard to change the way you've said something for 50 years.

  23. I know it’s important that we get our nicknames right on the board, so here’s the scoop: Odin - top Norse god Wotan - top Teutonic god - same guy - pronounced Votan Woden - top Saxon god - useful info if we sign someone from England Wotan’s daughter was Brunhilde - who married Siegfried. Fun fact - they never consummated their marriage. i can’t wait for the Lady Bills to sign a Valkure from Germany - we’ll be ready.

  24. You're not going to have 100% conformity on any subject. Especially in a country with 330 million people and a a Southern part of the country that's more culturally conservative than the Northern part. In 2014, UT actually dropped "Lady" from all womens sports team programs except basketball because "Lady Vols" is closely associated with the winning tradition of Pat Summit. It's part of their brand. The new AD brought it back in 2017 for all sports. Just like on this board, the division amongst UT fans over the term is largely generational.

  25. I don't think that is true about his age. At the time I remember hearing one of the reasons he reclassified was because he was going to be too old to play high school basketball in Illinois his senior season. That was the first time I had ever heard of that being a rule. So he was going to have to find a new home regardless and was able to cram thru the hours to graduate early. After a quick Google search, he will turn 21 this summer, so he is still on the old side of being a sophomore/soon to be junior in college. My understanding is that he was late to the game of basketball, so a year off could be really good for him to work on his game.

  27. Gee...I know lots of women athletes who like being called a lady. Don't know a single one that doesn't. The arrogance of those who demand others think like them. I also find it laughable that I get accused of wanting to pick an argument by a guy who has a tizzy about a woman being referred to as a lady. Who's trying to stir up crap? Look in the mirror.

  32. Roy (and some others on this board) are just looking to pick petty culture war fights with stuff like this. Your reasoning here is sound and you're absolutely correct. There's no winning against bad faith arguments, though. You can have the (very simple, straightforward) facts, and you can have all the reason and logic and intelligence possible behind your argument and it won't matter.

  37. When you start finding large numbers of people with antibodies against Covid, people which are unaccounted for, this may suggest many possible cases. One that interests me is the possibility that the population tested may have been in contact with Covid or similar viruses prior to the present epidemic and are still carrying antibodies to it in their blood. There is nothing extraordinary about the possibility of other Corona epidemic and lots of people carrying antibodies from before the time of the present epidemic. You have to understand that Corona produces clinical symptoms similar to influenza, but prior to this year there was no way to separate the Corona cases from the pool of people with flu like symptoms. Therefore, prior Corona epidemics may have passed totally undetected and bundled into the "flu" category in prior years. If this possibility is correct, then the current PCR tests may be detecting fragments left over from prior epidemics which are not currently infectious or capable of transferring the disease. This would make the whole issue with measuring "new" cases suspect, as we may be measuring old cases that already have immunity. I am not saying this is a fact, but it is a probable scenario for this epidemic.

  41. Ok. When I was in college, the progressives required us to call women collegiate athletes with the term Lady. Lady Bills, Lady Tigers, Lady .... The presumption of Billikens, Tigers... referring to the men by default was considered offensive and sexist. Confusion existed in the 1980s and 90s. Guys like Roy and me complied. Now the use of the term Lady is sexist and offensive? No confusion anymore in 2020? So the “default” term of Billikens means men? And such defaults of presuming male is not sexist but is progressive? Good grief. Save me from the good people!!
