The good Doc lives in Chicago. As stated he runs a large business. Even with your own plane it is an effort to travel . I am not really counting but he only showed up at four or five games last year. Unless he was in town for a board meeting or something I would be shocked to see him But on the celebrity side Bob O was there for awhile. Quote

If Scherts gets us to the sweet 16 or better, we’ll likely lose him ala the Utah St Coach leaving after one year. That said, it would be well worth the risk of losing him to have a shot at that one magical season. Plus his buyout would give us enough $$’s to bring in a quality replacement. Quote

Old guy - he was just on campus with the team like a month ago. Him and Ross brought the Saint Louis Shock out a closed door billikens practice. We should never question the loyalty of the Chaifetz's. They are genuinely the best thing to ever happen to this program and university. WUH, Adman, cgeldmacher and 2 others 5 Quote

I chuckled when he leaned over and said, “If we played defense like this, we would have won 6 more games last year.” They got after it last night. Fun night. This is gonna be a fun year. Go Bills. Wow, I thought the defense was light. Just a different perspective, I guess. Let's see how much grabbing, holding, pushing shoving JG gets in the the league this year. He certainly has some other pieces to drop the ball off to this year, for sure, but JG wasn't touched all practice IMHO. Seems very unfair to put Avila, Swope and Jimmer on the same team in the first 'quarter' of the scrimmage. They just hummed! I pictured this as spring training in baseball...everyone is going to hit .300, every fast ball is 97+ and those curve balls are all breaking sharply. I loved it, but will wait til the OOC is over. Just sayin' mhg billiken_roy 1 Quote

Do you honestly believe that there is a better coach than Schertz that would be available to us after one very good season? I really don't. The other side of this coin is the fact that we might lose a very large portion of the 24-25 season team if Schertz leaves. I will be happy and hoping for a long run if we are invited to go to the NCAA tournament this year and we retain Schertz. Quote
slu72 Posted July 24 Posted July 24 Sprinkle, the Utah St Coach, left for a P5 job after one successful season. So, it’s not unheard of. All I’m saying is if Schertz were uber successful this season, he would likely be pursued by P5 schools. I have no idea whether he’d jump or not. Just saying it’s very likely he’d be offered opportunities. Quote

johnbj14 Posted July 24 Posted July 24 As a fanbase, we just sat through a season where SLU was a bottom 150 team in the sport. If Josh Schertz has a good enough season where he can bolt for an elite job after one year, that means things were probably pretty good! Quote

He has to have a plan A, B and C. Hell, the hiring of Schertz himself was a backup strategy. He wasn't on any MBM's list of candidates six months ago. Quote

There were people absolutely interested him prior to 6 months ago. Also, I'm not sure you could call Schertz a "backup" candidate. They kicked the tires on Mack sure, but if you want to take May at face value, he said he was interested in Schertz after last years MVC tournament. I just don't think "backup" is an apt description to put on a guy whom was SLU's only public target. willie, Pistol, SLU_Lax and 1 other 4 Quote
Pistol Posted July 24 Posted July 24 This is from 8 months ago. @wgstl says "WPB has been chirping about Indiana st coach a bit" on page 1. (WestPineBills on Twitter had been talking about Schertz a decent amount before this 12/22 thread.) Then @3star_recruit says his name on the next page along with Ahearn and McCollum, saying these coaches are high-risk, high-reward and adding "Hiring young, unproven candidates isn't a new idea. It's basically how low-majors hire coaches." @Soderball added on 12/24 (perhaps missing the earlier mention, but still prescient): "What do MBMs think of Schertz at INST? They've been really good this year and have a team with some young players. Avila and Swope would probably help next year." @3star_recruit again: "I'm interested in the Indiana State situation for two reasons. Schertz is a former D2 championship coach. If Indiana State can secure an NCAA bid this year, programs who had shied away from hiring D2 coaches may begin to take a serious look. I'm also curious as to whether his two probable MVC first-teamers stay loyal to Schertz. They don't have to be part of a coach/player package deal. They would have enough portal value to get the best deal for themselves independent of the coach's decision." @Soderball - "He's an example of the sort of coach i'd like us to hire. Someone who's got players and is ready to take us from zero to hero right away. I've seen so many years of "rebuilding" that i'm pretty sure the "rebuilt" part is a mirage." This is the first thread that discusses Schertz as a possible HC at SLU. Bottom line is he was definitely on some MBMs' lists more than 6 months ago. (Some of us MBMs hang out on Twitter and Discord, too, and not all of it crosses over here.) Fun fact: First mention of Schertz on the board was by @HoosierPal when Indiana State hired him in March 2021. Quote
