  1. CBFan, enjoy your posts as well, but frankly I'm surprised at the response to a very mild jab taken at that place. it's not like I had the audacity to take a shot at Jerry Falwell Jr. I had no idea so many folks on a SLU message board felt so passionately about Liberty University. With the amount of hypocrisy and corruption there, not sure why anyone would want to defend that place regardless of your political affiliation. For example, there are quality conservative schools like Wheaton College that I wouldn't take shots at. And regarding keeping things you deem "political" off this board, if you are going to go down that road, be consistent. If you truly believe that, call it out when it is going the other direction too. We've seen plenty anti-political talk crusaders on this board go silent when there are political posts that align with their view. Happy Friday to you as well!

  5. What a great game against BSU. The Bills grind out a win in a tough venue against a good team. In the preseason , I had the game as a question mark. That means I had it as even. A come from behind win and no fold at the end ... a sign that the team is maturing. If you need more, check out my post game analysis in the spread thread. This brings us to game 8 (of D1 games). This is an important game. ..For the Bills, it is a quality opponent. For me, the 8th game represents the point in the season where the sample size is large enough to be able to say ...Yes , we are for real...the data shows we are really an A- team and are on track for a Dance bid. But first we have to win. UAB is another tough challenge.. The bad news is they are better than Boise. The good news is we are still the better team. But there are a few potholes along the way. The report card looks pretty good especially on the offensive side. ... Our first Offensive honor roll in a few years....straight A's. Let's see what the report card looks like for this game. ..........................SLU...........................UAB..........................SLU...........................UAB .......................................OFF..................................................................DEF............. Something I rarely do but then again this is a rare event. Enjoy. Wash St which had been the FT leader had a bad night at the charity stripe so we are now king of the FTs. WWN2D2W 48 / 39 / 77...do it....Out rebound them ...This was an issue in the last game with BSU ...we are clearly the better offensive team. But if we let them out rebound us , they get 2nd and 3rd chances and we lose our offensive edge. Out rebound them by 4+ ...Two keys to the game...Key 1...3P shooting...We need to beat them here....we are one of the better 3P shooting teams ...they are one of the worst defending the 3...we need that 38% from the arc....Key 2...Protect the ball...They are 3rd ITN in opp TOs....20.3/ gm...if we give up 20 TOs we lose...part of this equation is steals ...they have 3 guys in the top 100 in steals... 11.7/gm...Our TO target is 11...we will be in good shape if we can keep to 11 TOs. Bottom line....If we can protect the ball and make a few 3s we can show that we are for real.....Bring the buckets and put out the Blazers.

  6. As much as we hate to admit it there are some really good reasons to go to Columbia as a coach. 1. Cheating is ok. Everyone else has already done it, so no one will really even notice 2. Ratio of meth to resident. 3. Super nice trailer parks 4. Easy access to truck stops with lot lizards 5. Gas Station Fried Chicken 6. Plenty of seating options for family and friends at basketball or football games. 7. Barbers experienced with the Mullet cut. 8. Save on dentist bills, you don't want to stand out with a nice smile. 9. Unique SPUMAC nickname that you can be proud of. 10. Save on wardrobe expense as wife beater t's are on sale frequently at Walmart

  9. Religion does not equal politics. If you or anyone else think they are the same thing, you need to reevaluate the core tenants of whatever religion you follow. People like Jerry Falwell Jr. are a disgrace to the Christian faith. Calling that out is pro-Christianity, not anti-Christianity.

  10. Criticisms of Liberty aren't shots at anyone's politics. We've talked about the place here before. Rampant corruption in the family that runs (ran?) it, an online diploma mill used to fund capital projects, and currently a brutal story based on a long-term investigation about sexual assault reports being silenced and punished. If simply calling it a "school" feels like a shot at your politics or beliefs, it might be time for a little self-reflection. FWIW, I like when power conference schools go on the road and play these games. As SLU fans, we all should. Big schools refusing to do so is a loser's mentality that makes the sport less compelling. But I personally wouldn't want anything to do with this particular institution.

  17. One thing I thought was revealing in our first interview with Ford on the podcast is how he talked about the things he was looking for when he took the SLU job "as a place to finish my career". He's got the mentality of someone committed to a place long-term. A recent article from Stu suggested he's making $2MM+. It would take a lot for him to take another job like that. That said, it's in our best interest to have at least a little stability at the larger in-state power conference school. Martin has a big buyout but these schools always seem to come up with the money when they want to. But I also don't think Ford is a splashy enough hire for them right now. It's not like SLU is coming off consecutive Sweet Sixteens. I'm wondering what the sweet spot is for the next hire. Will they try to go big or will they feel constrained by the amount of the buyout? Marshall and Pitino both make sense as names people would be throwing around because they've both had high-level success and very public downfalls, so fans might be thinking they could grab them on the way back up for a discount. Who knows what the landscape looks like by the time the spring rolls around, though.

  18. I was also concerned about this scenario a couple of weeks ago. So, in a moment of weakness, I checked out Tigerboard to get their perspective and found this amazingly sane post: http://tigerboard.com/boards/view.php?message=17866228 He's got a better job whether anyone wants to admit it Missouri has fallen to the depths, and its ineptitude is only surpassed by the unrealistic place in college basketball hierarchy its fan have for it. MU is trending toward a dead fv<king last finish in the SEC this season and Ford has a job where he tells the AD what to do and when to get it done, runs the program as he sees fit and doesn't have to compete with football. Why would he come to work for a hyphenated last name in a giant albatross of a gym where football runs the show? He's been at that school, OSU, and it sucked.

  20. Weird not least because I don't think anyone from Liberty would really stick up for any of us. I went to grad school with a girl from an evangelical school and not kidding was told they were "surprised I wasn't satanic" because that's what a lot of hardcore evangelicals are taught about Catholics. not all of them, but many are taught some off the wall things about catholics, especially Jesuits, from a young age at church.

  23. Appreciate it. It's been spread around on social media way more than I expected in the first few hours. Hopefully people are enjoying it and it translates into good viewership numbers tomorrow. It is indeed painful that it'll be on a soggy field out in Seattle and not in front of a record home crowd, but that's life. In the last regular show, we talked about SLU's soccer fan base being something of a sleeping giant. Not in terms of massive scale, just that there's a larger fan base in the area and among alums than we might've realized as the program has been up and down but not this deep in the NCAAT since 2003. People have been hungry for this success. There's palpable buzz for the first time in a long time.

  33. I think it's mostly about not wanting to cannibalize their West County location with another one in St. Charles, and also the Metro East not having enough population to support one. So try and draw from both sides of the river with a centrally located one that has good highway access and visibility. The bigger story here may be about the university's willingness to divest many of its land holdings. Definitely a change in policy from the prior regime.

  34. I disagree that both teams are equal on all fields. If you were in Washington then you would be more use to this type of muddy field. Just like with horse racing some are better mudders than others.

That night he called Linssen, Thatch and Okoro about grad transferring to MU next season. After all players rejected coach Martin he sat back and told himself at least the buyout is big money.

  42. Deleting the NET, the average of the five ratings is: UAB 53.8, SLU 59.6. I watched on TV UAB's game vs. the USF Dons. UAB was primarily a half court team that night, did not shoot the ball particularly well. Based upon watching that one game, albeit through my blue tinted glasses, call it the BAB Eye Test, totally objective and unbiased, as always, I thought SLU is a better team than UAB. I also think SLU is better than undefeated USF-CA, having also seen the Dons play in person at the Chase Center in a 65-60 USF win over Davidson.

  44. Scouting the Washington Huskies. #2 National Seed. Jamie Clark’s 11th season, 4 Elite 8’s, seeking their first College Cup Final Four. (For those unfamiliar, Jamie was an All American player for his dad at Stanford, and, his dad was also well known for his long tenure coaching Notre Dame as well as Dartmouth earlier in his career) 4-4-2 often. (they can look like 4-3-3 and 3-5-2 at times) 1) Defending set pieces. This is how Washington scores often. Charlie Ostrem and Dylan Teves take their free kicks. Conveniently, both are All Americans. Lots of aerial curls and end swingers to UDub’s 3 tall, back line players who get forward. (Sailor, Burks, Robin). They also clean up mistakes. But cannot allow the Huskies to win those aerial battles, and need to limit corners and set pieces. Back post. 2) Teves and Ostrem. Teves will position up top or a central attacking midfield spot. He’s all over the field. Absolutely cannot give him space in the open field or counters. And, he will clean up any scrum in the box. Fast, fit, technical, cerebral player. Great finisher and passer too. He has back to back hat tricks this NCAA Tourney. If there is one player you must find at all times, it’s Teves. He can make something out of nothing quickly. Charlie Ostrem is a left footed, left back who plays end line to end line. He will go where the play takes him, anywhere on the field not just up the left flank. He’ll be more likely to create and provide service. Teves will do both. They will both be at every free kick. Burks will push up the right side but he’s more likely to send diagonal long balls from midfield instead of go to box to box. Achille Robin will play inside next to Burks. Steady defending and aerial threat. Getting into tight spaces, through balls are ways to counter that. Soto and Kossa Rienzi are undersized ball winners in the defensive midfield. Scardina is power/speed wing who likes to shoot from distance and can finish within the 18. Lucas Meek will possibly come off of the bench. He’s a very good 1v1 attacking mid who had been out much of the earlier part of the season with a broken collarbone. Ryan Sailor is the Pac 12 Defender of the year. Center Back, left side. He’s their Kipp Keller. He’s very good in the air on both offense and defense. He’s their steady back line leader. Teves and Ostrem were first team Pac 12. Meek 2nd team with Burks. Kossa-Riezi, Scardina, Soto were 3rd team. Washington is very good in transition. Lots of one touch combo play in the final 3rd. They don’t play a deep bench but they wear opponents down over time in games, and, they can get better as the game progresses. They also have a tendency to sit back a little bit with a lead leaving opponent opportunity on space in the box but it also creates counters for themselves and Teves. Fowler is a solid keeper who is not afraid to come out and challenge. Gio Miglietti is a versatile grinder up top or midfield. SLU needs to be efficient in the final third again. Defending Duke’s attacking third players was good experience tor SLU ahead of the game at Washington. The Huskies have a bigger and better back line than Duke. (Ostrem is smaller at left back) There is a bit of opportunity in the midfield for SLU. SLU can win the game by being a high level version of themselves. SLU needs to limit mistakes, limit transition, be efficient in the final third, be opportunistic, put pressure on UW backline and wings. Two of the best teams in the country. Playing an experienced, confident team as good as anyone in the country, at their place. This is why you play. Great, fun, opportunity for SLU.
