Kobe didn’t do much tonight to change my mind on that. I have starting five as: Dotzler, Swope, Gibby, Anya, Robbie Kobe, Thames, and LHJ fighting for wing minutes off the bench. Probably minutes for whichever of Casey, Brockhoff, Pikaar wants to show they can spell Robbie and Anya, too. EDIT: I’d also be doing a disservice to McCottry if I didn’t consider him in the mix somewhere, after his second half tonight. It’s nice to have some talented depth I didn’t see the game. How did McCottry look on D? Quote

SLUMS81 Posted October 19, 2024 Posted October 19, 2024 Maybe the team was practicing what not to do in the first half… Seriously, our bigs are legitimately quick and athletic which is a change from previous years. Should be very interesting once Avila returns. Quote

Crewsorlose Posted October 19, 2024 Posted October 19, 2024 I was there and watched the entire game closely. One thing in particular stood out: the spacing on the floor gives tons of room for driving lanes. A guy like McCottry who can get to the cup and is big enough to finish can really thrive in this offense. It's not just an offense for shooters and bigs with passing skills. Team had 11 TOs in first half and was 3/13 from 3s. Let's hope it's the worst half of the season. Quote
HoosierPal Posted October 19, 2024 Posted October 19, 2024 Just my thought, yeah it was an exhibition, but I was expecting a larger crowd on a Friday night. AGB91 1 Quote

I actually got our tickets all printed out (parents prefer the physical tickets). Quote

Things are going to get really intense if JS’s plan is to only give 8 guys serious PT…. Quote
WVBilliken Posted October 19, 2024 Posted October 19, 2024 So how is Schertz using Amari McCottry? As a shooting guard? If so who is he mostly competing with for playing time? Hughes? Quote

If so who is he mostly competing with for playing time? Hughes? I believe that is correct. I expect Dotzler to be ahead of Hughes, so LH would likely be further squeezed for PT by McCottry taking a role. I expect JS to play 9 most of the time, even though he has talked about possibly playing as few as 8. I'm sticking with Gibby, Robbie, Swope, Anya and Johnson as the starters. I was surprised at how big and physical Johnson looked. He may not be flashy, but I think there is a need for a glue guy, who plays good defense and does some of the dirty work. If Dotzler is the starter instead fine.. either way, I expect him to be in the rotation. JS really seems to like Thames. I have to think Casey will be in the rotation, as a backup to Robbie and Anya - although I think Thames will get minutes for Anya too. So that brings us to the "9th player" in the rotation - for lack of a better description. I think it's nice that LH is on the squad, he can knock down some 3s, but doesn't really do much to distinguish himself. He doesn't create his own shot or get to the rim or set up others with passes, is average athletically and his defense strikes me as mediocre. Some on this board have touted it - I don't see it. McCottry has a much higher upside. His size, skill and athleticism make him a potential match-up problem. I never want to over-react either way to an exhibition game, but I was really impressed with the poise and feel for the game McCottry seems to have. He won't be playing against the likes of Rockhurst and I expect he'll have his share of freshmen mistakes, but I would go with the upside of McCottry over Hughes. Zink 1 Quote

I agree that if Coach Schertz deviates from his norm of an 8 player rotation it's because of McCottry's potential. As he stated in the Sunday radio interview, "if Amari can get to where he's able to play consistent minutes, it changes our ceiling as a team." Quote

For my 35 years of Billiken fanhood the answer has been no whenever that questions is asked regarding on court apparel. Closest we've gotten are coaches polos or pullovers. I will be SHOCKED if they are for sale. I wonder if they will release some merch with that logo though. Quote
