  1. No chance the Cards make that trade. Did you see the way Carp worked the count the other day. He saw 9 pitches before grounding out to 2nd. Uninformed fans just don’t see the value he brings

  2. Step 1: Enough NCAA teams get COVID (with only mild symptoms of course) that the whole NCAA tournament ends up being cancelled by the sweet 16. Step 2: SLU wins the NIT. Step 3: SLU 2020 National Champs!

  3. Okay, so the monkeys have been hard at work, but not everything has gone according to plan. On the plus side, we sent the monkeys to exploit vulnerabilities at Kansas, Georgia Tech, and Virginia. They successfully infiltrated and infected all three. We also had them infect Duke, knocking them off the bubble (you knew the selection committee would've done everything possible to get them in). Bully for the monkeys there. Unfortunately, we had one major mishap: We sent the monkeys to infect Georgetown during the Big East tournament, and they mistakenly infected Creighton instead. Honest mistake, but a devastating one nonetheless. While we have had some success, we can and will do better in the future.

  4. Which is why I was never that concerned about unrestricted free agency. There aren't enough P6 destinations for these kids to go. You have to prove you're better than the players they already have. Averaging 10 points a game in the 17th ranked conference isn't going to cut it.

  5. Louisville or SLU would be up 15 right now against both these teams

  6. I’m very skeptical the Big East ever comes calling. The focus should be becoming the best program in the A10, and see where that takes us. SLU has struggled to put together sustained success, and that is the first step. Build a strong decade run, and then see what happens.

  7. No one should place any blame on the Monkeys. Those guys did their job. NCAA just decided they don't care about COVID anymore.

  8. I just came up with what I think is a radical idea to deal with our conference problems. I doubt it will happen, but wanted to throw it out there. I'm sure that folks will come up with several reasons this won't work. If you think it won't, go ahead and tell me why. I won't be offended. Here goes. The A-10 Conference and the American Athletic Conference reach an agreement to merge. However, they maintain the two separate conferences so that they keep two automatic bids and previous NCAA Tournament credits. Next season the top teams in the A-10 and the top teams in the AAC will be placed in once conference. The bottom teams are placed in the other. This ensure that the top teams get better games to give them the best chance of going to the tournament. It also gives the bottom teams better competition at their level and a chance to win an automatic bid. At the end of each season there would be a relegation process where the bottom three teams in the top level conference get dropped down. In turn the top three teams in the lower conference get moved up to play the better teams. As many of you know, this is similar to what happens in European soccer leagues. This set up creates pressure for schools to stay invested in their basketball programs and remain competitive. Tournament credits would be split only amongst the teams that were in your conference the year they were earned. So, even if your team get relegated, you still earn that money if you played with the teams that earned it in that particular year. A conference set up like this would give that top conference a talent level at or near the Big East. I have to think this would be a 4 to 7 bid league every year. It also solves the Fordham problem for the A-10 and similar situation(s) in the current AAC. For non-basketball programs, everything could remain the same, or maybe SLU could end up with some better regional matchups in those sports as well. How the non-revenue sports would be dealt with would just have to be worked out. Thoughts?

  9. ESPN's headline "Defense Shining, as Drake, Wichita State play for date with USC" Uhhhh...that's a very generous description of what I just watched. I think I'd go "Two mediocre teams with no business being in the NCAA tournament set offense back 50 years"

  11. DePaul's problem is and always has been a lack of commitment needed for their men's basketball program to compete in the Big East. A coach can't fix that and until that is fixed no coach will have anything more than short term success.

  12. Just got to listen to the announcers say that that Miss. St. is an alert upset and the team to beat on our side of the bracket. If we needed any bulletin board material, then this is it. Jalen Johnson reunion as well. Let’s get fired up Billiken Nation. Let’s show these guys what it means to fight a 100 year old fictious doll-god. Make it rain!!!!

  20. Coach Ford has lifted us from bottom 4 in the conference to top 4 in the conference despite Situation 2 and the 33 Day Pause. The next step is top 2 in the conference and regular NCAA bids. If you would have told me that was attainable after Crews, I would have laughed in your face.

  21. best way to get to the big east is build the gonzaga of he midwest. right now i dont think saint louis university brings enough to excite the big east programs. they think taking us is doing us a favor. we need to be doing them a favor by agreeing to come to them. and the only way that will happen if we have great year in and year out success. think butler. they were dominating their old conference. wait a minute wasnt that our conference?

  23. Yes and let trade Matt Carpenter for Mike Trout we can even throw in a pitcher from single A to sweeten the pot. I would make that trade wouldn't you. It will take a vote of both conferences to make something like that to happen and it isn't going to happen.

  25. Let's close the deal on this Hardin kid! He could be the best Billiken named Hardin since Greg Hardin from New York. The press guide that year for each player gave a capsule titled "Spoonhour's review." The first sentence of Spoon's review for Hardin said "Needs to make the transition to this level..."

  28. How many NCAA teams have had COVID issues now before games even started that likely should have knocked them out or would have knocked them out for a couple weeks during the regular season? Kansas, Virginia, Oklahoma, Georgia Tech, anyone else? SLU should have backed their way in if the NCAA actually followed their own regular season protocols. We don’t have any COVID worries since everyone already had it!

  30. Troll or not - he is wrong. First, what changed with SLU basketball in 1986? Saint Rich was already at work. Roland Grey and Monroe Douglass were already here in ‘85. Huge amount of fanfare. Bonner graduated high school in ‘86 but no one knew what he would become. Little fanfare comparatively, and yes the ‘88 and ‘90 NIT years but Craig Upchurch came after 1986 as did Grawer’s last year in ’91 - another low point. Spoonhour came in 1992 and Biondi promised Top 50 but did not deliver. At the same time, we played in brand new NBA quality facilities - state of the art and common in the Big East like he references. I prefer Chafeitz, but the days at Kiel/Savvis/Scottrade were not bad, were actually a selling point along with Great Midwest and Conf USA and were not the reason we did not do better. Not winning enough but the lack of a state of the art practice facility also hurt long after 1986. And as great as Chaifetz Arena was in 2008 and helped us attract RM, let’s face it, RM would have won playing games in West Pine Gym. After 2008, we won bc of RM ... not bc of Chaifetz Arena. And if unsure, just look at the Jim Crews years, after 2008, which did more to hurt the program than the good brought by Chaifetz Arena.

  31. Yes seems odd as during regular season if one player came down with it the whole team basically quarantined and paused all activities. When big $$$ is at stake the rules can be bent I guess

  32. I don’t think that’s what casual college basketball fans want. I think the casual college basketball fan and the diehard college basketball fan want the same thing, and that’s to see the Cinderella stories and David Vs Goliath. I believe the media and committee think the casual fan wants all big name schools but I think they are wrong.

  33. "The individual is asymptomatic, according to Pastner. No other members of the team were deemed close contacts through contact tracing." Hahah, this is just a farce at this point. Just stop talking about Covid if there is actually no way to be disqualified unless it is self-elimination. No team is going to self-eliminate. Kansas, Georgia Tech and UVA should all be out if the NCAA followed through with the plan they said.

  34. This wouldn’t be shocking. If SLU isn’t going to guarantee Phil a scholarship, it makes a ton of sense for him to go elsewhere where he’ll get a free education and playing time. For SLUs sake I hope he stays, is content to backup Yuri & hopefully develops into a great player, but for his sake I just hope he finds the right situation for him.

  37. @billiken_roy is spot on. At this time SLU needs to worry about winning basketball games in the conference it's in. SLU needs to build a program with a tradition of winning basketball with all the fixings, sweet 16s, a rabid fanbase, all the merch of the big boys, etc. Until we do that the Big East isn't going to come calling. It hurts me to type is as much as I'm sure it's going to anger everyone to read it. I desperately want to be in the Big East club with all the Marquette alum I work with. Sometimes the truth hurts. That said, if SLU REALLY wants to change conferences. The MVC is the most logical landing place. I get it, it feels like a step backwards. Maybe it is, but I see the MVC hot on the A10's heels. I would personally get more excited about playing teams like Loyola, Southern IL, Missouri St., and Valparaiso than all the east coast schools. How many of you know someone what went to a rival A10 school? I sure don't, but I know a bunch that went to schools in the MVC. AND try this one on for size, we convince Dayton to come with to the MVC with us and all of the sudden you're looking at a heck of a conference. A conference with natural geographical rivalries. A conference where the conference tournament is played in our backyard. A conference where we would be treated like we were wanted instead of the redheaded stepchild.
