Season Ticket Renewal Thank You Call
Gremio14 and 10 others reacted to cgeldmacher for a topic
I just got a call to my cell phone. I was on a work call and could not take it. Here is what the message said. "Hi, this is Amari from the SLU men's basketball team. I wanted to leave you a quick message to personally thank you for renewing your season tickets for this upcoming season. I also would like to invite you our open practice on Tuesday, June 24 starting at 4:00 p.m. at Chaifetz Arena. Thank again for your your support. I hope to meet you in person at our open practice next week." I'm upset that I was not able take the call. However, I am very happy that someone came up with this idea of having players make these personal calls. The Athletic Department sometimes takes heat for various perceived missteps, but this is a fantastic idea that someone over there should be commended for.11 points -

She needs to end up being the the basketball HOF. Her act only worked on basketball courts, so she was exclusive to that game. There are generations of fans and players who love her and her act. I've heard many stories about teams coming out from the locker room at halftime to watch her perform. If they let in executives, refs, broadcasters, etc. in the HOF, then they need to let the Panda in.7 points -

Here is my take...We are bigger... more aggressive...more physical ...faster...more athletic....We are still rough around the edges(they have only practiced a couple of weeks) but are looking good at this point. Players to watch... Best additions ...Otieno and Dunlap Nice looking shot...Sharp Shooter Sharma Healthy player...Thames played a lot of minutes with no seeming problems. Best freshman in a while...Kerr and Laczkowski...thin big guys who are athletic and can shoot. Knows what he is doing...Brown...has good floor sense and can shoot. Most improved from last year...Anya and McCottry...both more aggressive and playing more defense. Lost weight and is in better shape...Avila...he can still shoot and pass. Big difference maker...Jones....he can do it all Best Kwamain Mitchell impersonator...Green...he has that potential Bottom line...This will be a better team than last year and should win more games...check back with me on the first week in Nov. Chris May and the AD have tanked the SLU fanbase. We have elite basketball and soccer facilities compared to our competitors yet we can't take the next step in any capacity. The only exception is possibly women's soccer but even they've stalled out lately. The atmosphere at games is boring and unexciting. This is on Chris May and his buds. We need to focus on the younger fanbase and young families. I say out with the olds and let's focus on youth. The oldies have money but Chris can make them happy with a fake smile and a handshake at a private event but I say give their tickets to people who will bring energy to the games. Look at the NBA and NHL playoffs. All the fans wear the shirts, all the fans know when to stand, all the fans make it a crazy atmosphere. I'm not talking about stupid sh.it like gimmicks at every game. I'm talking about getting people who actually care at the games. Give away the padded seats up the middle. Have tailgates and food for the students pre-game. Not the current type of tailgate where it's a bunch of losers in a suit handing out pizza but I'm talking like a college football tailgate where the students can hardly make their way into the arena. Also can we please get Chris out of a fu.cking suit every game? It ain't 1999 anymore. Hell I'd argue we dump the band unless we can be more like a big school football band. But at least the band has people who show up with some energy. It's time for wholesale changes. With the way college athletics are trending where they are essentially the minor leagues, you need to make it an electric atmosphere. You need to focus on a new fanbase or you'll watch yourself die. End the uppity culture from the AD. Move on from the boomer/harassing culture that Travis Ford left. Make it fun. See you all in another 18 months6 points

So to summarize, you are suggesting that we push out the 60+ year olds crowd who actually show up to the games and pay the bills, and allow the 20 and 30 year old crowd who excel at running their mouths but disappear when asked to spend any of their own money, take over. When I was your age, we didn’t need gimmicks to create an electric atmosphere and we also didn’t portray ourselves as the poor victims looking to spew hate at our older fans who were supporting the program. The only thing keeping the arena from being filled are losers like you who would rather whine than show up to the game and reach into their own pocket. It’s stunning that you think alienating a large portion of your fan base is the key to success.6 points -
Short answer: Yes, but some context helps. Longer answer: Maddie is a unique talent that doesn’t come across often, especially at her position. She’s a forward. She scores goals. She sets up goals. She’s excellent off of the dribble or in space. That position also gets more attention than other positions. She is one of the best players in the country in her age group. Class of 2027. She would likely reclassify to 2026. 2026 Izzy Dalke (Clemson) is an outside back and USYNT regular in her age group. 2026 Gracie Milam (Florida) is a center back and also a USYNT player in her age group. 2026 Lily Selvy (Penn State) is a goalkeeper with USYNT experience. 2026 Alex Pfeiffer is a forward who turned professional just as she was turning 16. She plays for KC Current in the NWSL. She was the 4th youngest NWSL signing and she became the youngest ever NWSL goal scorer. Unfortunately then Alex tore her ACL last season. Alex helped lead USYNT to the U15 Concacaf Championship. And ahe scored the game winning goal for USA in the Mondial Montigu Final U16 Final. Alex was the ECNL National Player of the Year and also the top ranked player in her class. She would have been a 2026 graduate. She played up with 2024 and 2025 players to win back to back ECNL National Championships, including with a few Billikens. 2025 Caroline Birkel (Stanford) is a regular USYNT Goalkeeper in her age group. 2025 Grace Restovich (Notre Dame) reclassified to be 2024 instead of 2025. Box to box central midfielder and USYNT regular with Birkel. She had a good Freshman season at Notre Dame on a young NCAA Quarterfinal team. They will be one of the national title favorites in 2025. 2027 Ella McNeal. Ella is one of the best few goalkeepers in the country in 2027 class. She did not play high school soccer. She did play basketball at Parkway West. She is a regular goalkeeper for the USYNT for her age group. There are 2 USYNT players from St. Louis in 2028 class. And there is 1 from the 2029 class. There also was a recent new USYNT college camp announced to increase player pool depth for the USYNT at that age group. 2 St. Louisans were invited, Kiley Kukan a forward,(Alabama) and Zoe Cuneio, a center back (Purdue) were invited. Cuneio reclassified from 2024 to 2023. And that’s just USYNT players from St. Louis. There have been other very high level players that didn’t play USYNT. Example: Another St. Louisan was one of the best Freshman college players nationally at Arkansas this past season, Jay Brownlee. She played high school soccer with 2 Billikens. SLU for example, has had many recent All Americans, and none were all that highly ranked as youth players. Obviously many top ranked youth players go on to great college and pro careers. Some don’t. And some our perform their recruiting or rankings. This is similar to any other sport. Kansas City has some USYNT players in a similar age group but they live in Kansas. Generally speaking but not always the best high school aged soccer players in KC are on the Kansas side. Megan Hinnenkamp was the SEC Freshman of the year in 2023. Injured in 2024. She is from Liberty, MO Izzy Dalke is Metro East Illinois. 2025 Lily Freer (Stanford) is Metro East Illinois as well. ………….. As far as their high schools: DiMaria: Cor Jesu McNeal: Parkway West Dalke: Althoff Milam: Francis Howell Selvy: Fort Zumwalt North Pfeiffer: Visitation Restovich: Visitation Birkel: MICDS Kukan: Winfield Cuneio: Eureka Brownlee: Fort Zumwalt South Freer (Alton) Hinnenkamp: Liberty North The 2028 STL USYNT players attend Edwardsville and Visitation. And this again doesn’t include several other players in different class years that have had high level college success. Rylie Combs was the SEC Defender of the Year this past season at Mississippi State. She attended St. Dominic. Maci Teater (Holt) was named to the best 7 team for the TST Tourney this Summer. She plays at Vanderbilt, formerly North Carolina. And so on. ………… But yes Maddie DiMaria is one of the best players in the country in her age group, USYNT player. She’s ranked #1 nationally, in two different rankings in her year. She’s a forward as is Alex Pfeiffer. None of the other STL players played high school soccer as a Sophomore. Some switched to high school after their college commitments, as Juniors. Some played as Freshman. Some never played it. ……….. Ella McNeal is considered to be a top 3 goalkeeper nationally in 2027, top 25 overall at any position. Alex Pfeiffer was number 1 nationally in 2026 as a forward. 2026 Dalke was top 10 as an outside back. Birkel was top 2 nationally at goalkeeper in 2025 class, top 30 overall. 2024 Restovich was top 10 even though she reclassified from 2025. KC has a top 10 national player in 2027 at center back. Another fast rising player is top 50 but soon to be top 25 probably. Both are on the Kansas side and don’t play high school soccer. KC also gets a few top 50 level players various years. Typically the best few STL players annually are top 50 level. More importantly for SLU’s purposes, SLU know how to identify,, recruit, close, and develop, many high level, on the rise, players, regardless of rankings. SLU will also target many top 50 top 100 caliber players from anywhere in the country. SLU’s recruiting list of roughly 175 players includes players from 30 states and 45 cities. There are several good high level St. Louis players on it. Half a dozen from the same club. A few elsewhere. Maddie DiMaria tops that national list for them.6 points

Year in Review
CenHudDude and 4 others reacted to HoosierPal for a topic
This is a fantastic review of the year. The three pillars of the ADepartment: Educate, Compete, Building Community. For those who have forgotten, this is college athletics. Yes, football and basketball have gone pro, but for the rest of the athletes, they are at SLU to gain an education and to compete in their sports. If you don't value education anymore, tell that to the athletes and their parents. How many SLU athletes will be able to make a living playing professional sports in their selected sport? 10%? I'm unsure of the total number of SLU athletes, but with 298 making the A10 Commissioner's Honor Roll, I'll estimate that there are at least 400. So for the 360 that won't get a living wage paycheck for playing sports after graduation, Education is their future. We have several posters who appear to not care about education, or the athlete. The athletes apparently are at SLU simply to provide entertainment, while the "fan" gets to sit in a comfortable seat with plenty of beverages nearby. I for one, and maybe I am the only one, am glad SLU stresses education. Compete: For the poster who didn't find anything about wins, you needed to have the volume on or you had already tuned out. To bash track and field is irresponsible. They put in every bit as much effort as the baseball, softball and every other athlete puts in. I guess winning the A10 softball tourney and medaling in T&F A10 Championship isn't winning? Building Community is a vital part of everyone's life these days. If you volunteered to help out in N. St. Louis after the tornado destruction, you can see how important this is. The video highlighted the basketball team's efforts in N STL, hospital visits, visiting schools and serving others. The Jesuit Mission emphasizes serving others. Building Community-the third pillar Go Bills!5 points -

You’re welcome. I was wondering when I was going to get this question outside of private messages. Speculation isn’t my thing. But I will share what I shared with some others for many months privately. Short answer: SLU is heavily recruiting her, and yes SLU has a legit, strong, chance of landing her. Competition is elite and challenging, as expected. The process takes time. Long answer: SLU has been actively recruiting Maddie for a while. SLU has put together a competitive, unique, NIL package to compete with the small, select number of elite programs on the coasts of interest to her. Those are mostly coastal ACC and the few West Coast warm weather Big 10. Maddie is a reclassification candidate. She is allowed to change her mind at any time but she has said she prefers not to skip too many steps, meaning she prefers to play college soccer first before professional soccer. At this time, she hasn’t added any new schools to her list since June 15th recruiting period opened. That hasn’t prevented many from trying. Katie Shields attended many/most of her high school basketball games, high school soccer games, and club soccer games this past year. All of the above. Maddie most often plays as a left sided forward in a 3-4-3 system at both the club and high school level. She also plays with the USYNT in her age group. But she can and does play any of the attacking positions. It’s extremely competitive, but I like SLU’s chances. SLU will do very well with or without her. So that people understand the landscape. Maddie is just 1 of 13 local STL youth players that have played with the USYNT program over the past 5 years. A few of those are younger than her. And a few differences with similar age and older players are: The others didn’t play high school soccer. More people know Maddie because of that. Her family has strong ties to SLU and the STL soccer community. And Maddie has landed a few accolades such as the one you mentioned, as well as the top ranking in her age group at both TDS and Prep Soccer. The point of that is to say Maddie is a great, elite player, and talent, deserving of accolades and who will hopefully pick SLU. But, there are many other high level stud players out there locally, (and nationally) with other names too. Some of those players are perhaps less familiar to some for some of the reasons I gave. Example: Did you know that Ella McNeal has been a long time USYNT Goalkeeper? She is the younger sister of 2025 SLU Men’s Soccer player Jacksen McNeal. There are 11 other player stories too. And that’s just USYNT players. Sometimes the players with the better college careers were never affiliated with USYNT or had special accolades. Maddie’s dad Jeff played at both Connecticut and SLU as did Kevin Kalish at a similar time. Both were All Americans. Maddie’s mom Sara played at Loyola Chicago as SLU only had a club team at the time. Maddie’s older sister Ana is a reserve player at Mizzou as she sat out last year with injury. Jack is playing at SLU this Fall. Younger brother Tommy broke his ankle during a USYNT U14 game this Spring. But he will be back for Fall ball. Everyone is different, but a typical recruiting cycle is 3 to 6 months of getting to know the player/staff, and the player giving a commitment. That’s how it is on the Women’s side, with some taking up to a year to commit somewhere. The Men’s pace is much slower. Official visits begin August 1st. Football schools schedule visits for football weekends so the recruit can be in the field for the game etc…which pushes some of those visits into the later Fall months. Maddie’s next game is Thursday at the ECNL playoffs in Del Mar (San Diego). She is playing up with the U19’s in the Round of 16. They play Solar (Dallas) this Thursday. 3 SLU commits are on the team. 2025 Caroline Chier (Missouri Class 3 Player of the Year) 2025 Ava Rademeyer (Missouri 1st Team All State, 2025 Blakely Hockett (Illinois All State) Maddie usually plays on the 08 team with 2 other SLU commits 2026 Lucy Marsh and 2026 Keira Bartholet, also all conference and all state players. SLU has roughly 175 recruiting targets this cycle nationally. Early priority targets are roughly a dozen to 2 dozen at this time from a variety of geographies. Recruiting is a 365 thing. SLU and several other schools recruited a recent 2026 from player from Texas who is talented but coming off of a knee injury. So her process took a little longer. She committed elsewhere.5 points

Its a little slow lately... who remembers their first Billiken game? I do. January of 1986 with my dad. Monroe Douglass and Roland Gray were both freshmen and Douglass scored 18 pts but we could not stop Walter McBride of Xavier and they pulled away at the end. It was a thrilling game and old Kiel was so loud. I was completely sold after that. I knew I would follow my dad to SLU and thus would commence 40+ years of mostly heartbreak with a few moments of glory mixed in. We got season tickets the next year. Does anyone remember sitting in the second deck at Kiel Auditorium? You literally had to walk up 10 or so long ramps to get to your seats.5 points -

My wife and I were at the free practice this afternoon, and I was glad I went. I had not been at the Chaifetz since my hospitalization in November 2023 plus all the tough rehab that followed it. Leaving aging and decay aside, I must say I was happy to see Thames play with no evidence of cramps and able to play well. I did not recognize him while the practice was going but I asked one of the assistants iif he had played. He told me with a big smile that Thames had played the whole time wearing the number 6. I am truly very happy for Thames, they seem to have his problem under control with whatever combination of salt pills and hydration they have decided to use. I will be the first one to agree that real competitive play requires more than the degree of effort required by practice. We will see what happens when the season starts, but I think we are justified to start thinking that Thames may be able to play this season at least as a regular player.4 points -

1. Crews would have been not signed to a contract after taking the team to 1 2nd round NCAA tournament. Not fired. 2. Put that in context. Retired Coach, who won't recruit and took over a complete team that had 80% of their minutes returning. Who doesn't win COach of the Year? 3. This is blatantly false. Message board nonsense. Majerus didn't name a successor, and even if he did no one would have paid attention to him. The real reason Crews was named interim was simple. May wanted to keep him on the staff and he said he wouldn't stay unless he was the HC. Whitesell had been clamoring for the interim job (and no more) and May chose Crews over him. Whitesell also had the players approval way more than Crews. 4. High profile NCAA tourney team is an easy springboard to more successful recruiting. While Crews' big class with Yarbrough, Roby, Reynolds, etc was a dog, the real issue was Crews didn't start recruiting the previous year till he was sure he would be back. Refused to recruit and had Crawford fall in his lap, but got nothing else out of that class at all. Because of that he went all in on the following class and recruited some of the worst Billikens in modern history. A good coach uses great on court performances to get bigger and bigger recruits. Crews squandered it, and there was never any indication that he would be a successful recruiter, he was a dinosaur, hadn't had a good recruit since the 90s and refused to hire any recruiting hotshots for his staff, just hired old Army buddies.3 points -

I fully agree that Crews was terrible here. However, every AD in the country would have hired Crews after he took the team to the Round of 32 and won national coach of the year. It's an unfortunate situation, but there was no way he wasn't going to get hired. Let's say May hires someone else and that guy doesn't make the tournament the following year. A few years ago, I'm saying take the toughest schedule, but in today's college basketball world where it has been made nearly impossible for non P6 schools to earn at large bids, the answer is to have the easiest conference schedule. It offers a better chance at a double bye - thus a better shot at winning the conference tournament, which is essentially now the only path to an NCAA bid.3 points

First Billiken Game
Bay Area Billiken and 2 others reacted to Box and Won for a topic
This is really cool. My first game would've been around the same era (although I don't recall exactly when, maybe a year or two earlier) and with my dad as well - maybe we're around the same age. I have so many fond memories of Kiel Auditorium - it was such a unique venue and a cool place to see a game. I wish it could've been preserved somehow. I'm pretty sure we always sat in the upper deck, so I definitely remember those ramps.3 points -

My Freshman year was 1977. The Billikens were playing then in the Arena (later known as the Checkerdome when Purina bought the blues and the building). The student section had less than 10 people per game and even that was probably about 5% of the total attendance. That's my only memory. How pitiful the attendance was. There was no good reason SLU played in such a large venue Those of you complaining of attendance and students showing today have no idea how far we have come in 4+ decades.3 points -
My first game featured Lee Winfield and his North Texas State Eagles versus the Joe Wiley led Billikens. Some people don't realize how outstanding Joe was.3 points

I think you are really overthinking this idea of CJS "developing" big men. I think it's more of a case of showing a recruit how a big can fit into his system by pointing to Avila. No different than what CJS did on the video of Trey Green. He didn't say he "developed" Swope, he simply pointed to him as an example of how another undersized guard like Green can fit into his system.3 points -

You missed the point of my post. At no point did I say players would choose between SLU and Maryville. Players who go to Maryville probably never got an offer to play D1 ball elsewhere. The players we need to worry about are the ones with the skills to get offers to go to another D1 school. If everything else is equal, those players will usually go to the place with more money. However, if things are not equal, if one schools training facilities, living areas, playing arenas are so inferior and inadequate to another schools, then it reaches the point where more players will choose the one with better facilities over the ones with inadequate facilities. Keeping the facilities at each sport roughly equal to what our D1 peers have in that sport is the table stakes we need to put in to that sport to play in that sport. My point was that one of the biggest myths perpetuated on the board is the myth that we cannot fund facilities in other sports without taking from the money generated by men’s basketball. Maryville building their new baseball facility clearly shows that you can do those things without touching men’s basketball revenue. Maryville is generating no men’s basketball revenue. Last season they drew 2,611 fans as the announced attendance at all home men’s basketball games combined. Average 218 per game per the box scores published. Tickets were $10 each, free to students, faculty, staff, children under 6. So say 150 people paid $10 each to attend the games, or $1500 per game. Concession sales for that crowd can’t be much because of its size, say $200 per game net after expenses to be generous. Parking is free. TV revenue is non-existent. So they get say $1700 gross per game, and from that they need to pay refs, ushers, janitors to clean the gym, etc. They are not generating any money from men’s basketball at all. So when they built the new baseball facility, they did so without taking any of the revenue from men’s basketball because there was no revenue to be taken. Yet, they still found a way to build it. If they can figure out how to do it with no men’s basketball revenue, we should be able to as well. If it takes throwing Chris May a retirement party and hiring whoever the AD at Maryville is to get these new ideas going in our athletic department, then do it.3 points -

Agree with some of this. One reason why I have maintained my fandom and support long after graduation is the high quality of student athletes SLU has developed. A ton of terrific young men and women who represent the school very well. I dont take for granted how many end up on the commissioners list. However there is no financial reason why SLU can't compete for conference championships in every sport they play in and Chris May has failed us on this in several areas. We are not competitive OR have substandard facilities OR BOTH in Swimming/Diving, Tennis, Field Hockey, Baseball, Softball, and previously successful programs Women's BBall and Volleyball are trending in the wrong direction. There was much to be proud of last year but they have ALOT of work to do.2 points -

There are few people I believe on this board that care more about the baseball program than I do. No one is more frustrated with our substandard facilities. Could we possibly create a separate thread with just baseball stadiums better than ours? I live in Jacksonville, FL and their are at least 30 within 25 square miles of my house better than ours that I could add. It just gets a bit repetitive. Nothing is going to change unless the Mbb team generates a lot more revenue or a mega donor steps up. Like it or not Chris May isn't going anywhere.2 points -
