Woodson being back at Indiana (lol) is good for SLU in the carousel. Thats the type of job that would move dominos all over.

Yeah that kind of stuff is underratedly key for SLU's chances. SLU is targeting the guys we want them to target. But if the carousel starts spinning out of control, we may get bullied out of line. I am also hoping that a team like Indiana St or even Drake doesn't go on a Sweet 16 NCAA run

…or they really have better things to do than to see a lame duck “coach” attempting to coach.

A down year doing the Spoonball era still drew bigger crowds than the best years in the Majerus era.  It was just a different time.

Using the Spoonball attendance numbers as a measuring stick is not fair to the next coach.

Recently discovered pic of @Box and Won during his freshman year at SLU. That front-end bra on the Miata is 🔥 Wonder if he still has his Blaupunkt....

The '80s ambience, jury-rigged gags, and dumb bravado of MacGruber / The Dissolve

And SLU was playing in the 20,000 plus capacity Arena.

College basketball attendance has been on the decline for quite a while. The trend is to go to smaller arenas. This is from an ESPN article:

https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/39661549/how-mens-college-basketball-keeping-fans-engaged-building-smaller-arenas

Here's a key line:

Average attendance for Division I men's basketball has fallen in the past 15 years, from 5,325 in 2007-08 to 4,354 last season.

Richmond just clinched the #1 seed in the A10 tournament, and guaranteed themselves at least a tie for #1 in the regular season (Loy-Chi can tie them, but Richmond owns the tiebreaker). This is obviously success in this new era. So Richmond is the A10 team that has figured out the portal and NIL the best? What are they doing that other teams (notably SLU) have not done?  They have 5 transfers on their team, 3 are grad students from East Tennessee State, Western Carolina, and Wofford, two more from Wagner and the Citadel. None of them are from highly regarded National powers. 5 more are freshmen. I’ve yet to hear anything substantial about their NIL spending either. Yet they have enjoyed success on the court. So what have they done right that we should look at doing, and what have we done wrong that they have avoided doing?

Same thing that system coaches have been doing since the beginning of time.  Subscribe to a system, build a roster of players that is compatible with that system and teach that system.  Mooney had some bad years over the last decade but the AD stood behind him and the pendulum has finally swung his way.

Other than bully ball -- which Coach Ford abandoned the last two years -- he doesn't have a coaching north star.  There is no system.  He's recruiting the best local/regional players he can get, filling in the roster with some transfer role players and apparently, hoping everything works out.

3star hit the nail on the head ..... Mooney's adherance to the Princeton offense in general.  Every game you watch of Richmond every announcer gushes about Pete Carrill and the Princeton system.  Mooney played under Carrill.  No other team really runs it in the A10 so each Richmond game is a stand alone event on just about everyone's schedule.  How many backdoor-cuts-for-layups did they get against us?  Plus he plays a relatively soft center who initiates the plays (Golden, Grace, now Quinn).  from the top of the key with great spacing.  You add in one guy (Burton, Francis, Gilyard, King) who runs a decent PG show and is a scorer.  He has a serviceable four (Cato, Bigelow) who rebounds and scores as an addition.  He essentially plays five guys and prays for limited help from the bench.  In each case, the sum is greater than the individual parts.  Team ball ---- in direct contrast to hero ball.

He used the OCC to hone these five into a cohesive unit.  The OCC included a few decent P6 schools (Boston College, Colorado, UNLV, Wichita State, Florida, Charlotte) who were okay but not great in their respective leagues.  Of those mentioned, he lost to all but Charlotte.  This served as a decent prep for a weaker A10.  His only losses were at VCU and to Umass in the A10.  He got Loyola early and then beat Dayton at home.  His double games were against VCU, Davidson, Geedubya and Mason.  I'd say it was a perfect storm for the Spiders.  They went 8 and 5 in their OOC schedule.  Plus they have avoided injuries because, much like Dayton, they are a five-man team.

Mooney is definitely a 'floor' guy. His program will never totally bottom out like a Travis Ford program. But floor guys get fired because fans get apathetic after a bunch of mid level finishes.

I was just a young pup then, a freshman.  Not a care in the world.  Totally oblivious to the hellish, tortuous emotional roller coaster this program would put me/us through.

I love the mid to late 90s era of Billiken basketball.  I wish we could go back there.  But I don't think it's useful to rehash what happened 30 years ago in a very different social environment.  We had strong crowds even in a down year during that period.  That would not happen today.  Bandwagon culture is a lot more ruthless now.  There were a lot more families attending sporting events back then as well.

Mooney's program absolutely bottomed out in 2018 with a 12-20 season followed by a 13-20 season.  That's where the Fire Mooney billboards came from.  But there was a path to redemption because he at least had a system.

Mack to Vandy

Schertz to SLU

McCollum to Missouri St

Moser to DePaul

Ford to FloSports

Mo state doesn't make good coaching hires so not possible.

BUT sounds like MSU is likely going to the Cusa so it would be wise

No, they didn't.

The 18 season they went 9-9 in conference for a mid-pack finish. The 19 season they finished bottom 4 in conference with a few key injuries.

Here is the kicker. Those two years the minutes were dominated by freshmen and sophomores. The core of that group went on to be 24-7 in 2020 and projected as an 11 seed in the NCAA tournament.

If <insert coach here> had led the Billikens to back-to-back seasons of 12-20 and 13-20, regardless of conference finishes, MBMs would not be engaging in semantic arguments about what bottoming out is.  We would be claiming, rightly, that the program had cratered.  As Spider Nation nation did back then.

Doesn't even matter this is SLU with Travis Ford 1 NCAA win ever, that's Richmond with Mooney took them to Sweet 16. So the arguments are pointless would we wouldn't we want him gone.

Hoosier is just trying to dig at us without making a statement.

As @3star_recruitpoints out Mooney has a system. Ford has no system. Anyone with any knowledge of basketball can watch the game and see the team is terribly coached. This issue is not a 1 year issue the team was bad last year. Ford's teams rely on great talent to overcome his lack of coaching ability (Smart, Bess, Goodwin, Yuri). Without that great talent his weaknesses are exposed.
