Stu took a lot of heat on here for a perceived lack of effort. IMO  some of it was deserved. But he was better than nothing and I enjoyed his game pieces.
I just hope the Post fills his spot and the Billikens still have a beat writer.

He has done some of his best work in the past couple of years.  Would not surprise me if we dont get a dedicated beat guy.  Bummer.

  • OkieBilliken changed the title to Stu quitting???? NOOO!!!!

What is going on with the title of this thread? It literally says he's set to retire in the headline of the link.

My bad.  I am a bit of a conspiracy theorist.

Sounds like Tom timmerman will take up the SLU beat.  His coverage of City SC has been generally mediocre, so that’s what i expect here too

Tom covered the Bills pre Stu. Approach seed pretty laid back. I have met him a few times and is a nice enough guy but I think we will miss Stu. Where is Dave Doer when you need him?  Yes I know he is no longer with us.

I was assuming they were just cutting cost & leaving us on our own. we need what little we get out of the lame stream press :)

I was a critic of Stu early on, but he got a lot better over time, especially about the last 5 years or so - he did a lot of good player profiles, plus he get better at social media and finally embraced covering recruiting. He will be missed, and the level of coverage is likely to suffer.

The level of coverage in the PD may suffer....but go-to sources on SLU, recruiting, and prep/college game are this board, Cusumano and Earl Austin.

Tom Timmerman did an excellent job covering SLU during the Majerus era.  I'll be glad to see him back on the beat.  Especially since, given the state of the Post, the alternative probably would be no coverage at all.

i always liked Stu Durando.  i met him a long time ago and thought he was a great visit.   i was disappointed he lacked any sort of fan leaning, but i guess a good journalist is supposed to be such.   that said, i think now he is a true billiken guy and we will definitely miss him.   hope we hear from him again.

The PD is in a cost cutting mode, as are most if not all local newspapers.  They are shutting own their Maryland Heights printing operations and will have the paper printed in Columbia, trucking the papers in early morning.  72 employees will be let go. Last month six newsroom staffers were let go in a cost cutting move.

Late evening games, news, etc., won't necessarily be in the morning issue due to the hour+ travel window.

Good luck to Stu, retiring from the PD after 28 years.  At 64 years of age, he has time to venture into other interests he may have.  (I hope his PD pension (as well as the others recently let go) survives the cost meltdown.

They have said Cardinal night games won’t make the morning edition. I would think our home games might be in jeopardy. Probably the only reason I still subscribe is sports. Might have to rethink.

Go electronic. I read the PD on my iPad. Much cheaper than paying for printed paper to be delivered to my house.

Probably the answer but I prefer the paper.

I went this route but I have to admit I miss having the paper copy.

There was just something special about flipping through the print edition while sipping my morning coffee.

Plus the print edition is better while on the crapper.

I am with you Willie. There is something about a morning cup of coffee and reading the paper on my porch.  Hard to replace that but sooner or later we will have to.

Stu got much better at his job over time but he never became any less of a prick, and I think much of that improvement is simply because there was so much room for it. Timmerman is great, with the buzz around the program I'm sure he'll have plenty of great content for us.

Tell that to Dave Matter

Wish his son would come home and cover some teams.  He is a rising national star in Denver.

I enjoyed Tom when he was on the beat.  Stu took awhile but he really became solid the last few years.

I don't think Dave Dorr has passed.  He was supposed to be enshrined in the St. Louis Sports HOF last month at the MAC.

Thanks Steve.  I subscribed and got an interesting initial story featuring a shot chart from the second half of the exhibition.  Mid-range shots aren't allowed in Schertz offense, unless it is a 'mastery shot'.  Johnson's 5 to 7 foot floater classifies as a mastery shot according to Schertz.  " 'The Holy Grai' is getting five guys playing together at the same time.  Most offenses have one or two guys playing well and everyone else is out there."
