For those with a PD subscription, be sure to read Stu's article on Anya.  Schertz has him as a hybrid, but he is playing Avila's role of trigger while Robbie is on the sidelines.  He was getting reps there in the summer, so this isn't new.

Studied business and applied mathematics at Brown. His goal is to lead the A10 in rebounding this season.  Interesting comments on running a break.

Stu is putting out some good stuff.

Stu seems to be as rejuvenated with the new team as the fans.

Leads me to believe we will see Casey come in when Avila needs a rest, and Anya sliding over to point center.  And of course Casey also backing up Anya when he sits.  Then again, maybe Casey starts and Anya backs up both Casey and Avila.  Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Imo, Anya starts and plays 30+ minutes per game.    Casey will back him and Avila.  Avila will play 30+ minutes per game.  Brockoff wouldn't embarrass with minutes at either spot unfortunately, I don't see the minutes available.  Pickaar while tall is obviously in need of physical development imo.   But he can shoot.   And I am betting is in long term plans but more of a wing redshirt possible?

The two big time shooters, swope and jimerson are gonna start, star, and play big-time minutes.   That leaves young Hughes, Dotzler, Thames, and Johnson to get the rest of the minutes.   Who starts for that last spot I wouldn't hazard to guess.   Personally I would take Johnson or Hughes just because they seem to me to be the better defenders with maybe Hughes the better shooter of the two.  but Dotzler showed well at the last scrimmage and Thames is the highlight reel of the team.

One thing is for sure this is quite the talented roster.   If Schertz is truly going to keep the rotation at 8 as rumored.   That is gonna be a tough task for the last four spots.  Good luck coach.

Now is the time of the year when we can all guess what Schertz is thinking.  We are all right, until he shows his hand.  Schertz has been quoted as favoring a 7-8 man rotation.  He also recently said that the starters and rotation are not set in stone on game 1.  We all know that last year at Indiana State, he primarily played 7.

I looked up the Sycamore's stats from the 22-23 season and they show a different picture.  Eight players started 6 or more games, and 10 played 10+ minutes in the majority of the games.  Another played 9.3 m/g.  So he was going 10 deep in his rotation.

No one will argue against Avila, Swoop and Jimerson starting, and playing 30+ minutes.  Last week Schertz said on the radio that Thames was playing as well as anyone.  He did have an issue with his achilles in the scrimmage.  Hughes has the best 3% of the remaining players.  Dotzler was with the starters in the scrimmage.  Anya and Casey bring a physical big presence that no one else on the bench that will protect the lane and rebound.  Johnson didn't come here to sit on the bench.  That's nine players.  If he stays at 7-8, one or two are left out.  Going to be fun to see how this roles out.  The Exhibition games probably won't tell us much, but the game in Sioux Falls will be the first indication of what Schertz is going to do.

He didn’t have the depth of talent at Indiana State so he’s never dealt with this issue. It will be interesting to see how he handles it early on because my take from the 2 open events was that there were more than 7-8 players in the mix.

if I had 10 studs I'd use them all.

10 studs on average would get 20 minutes/game.  If five of them averaged 30 minutes/game, the other five would average 10 minutes/game.

3 star, do you know how long ago it was that Schertz coached at Lincoln Memorial? Was this a college level position?

Schertz coached at Indiana State for 3 seasons, starting with 2021-22.  He coached at Lincoln Memorial, a DII school, for 13 years.

Schertz took 13 years D2 to develop and build up his system. His 3 years at ISU may be taken as a time used for adjusting it to D1 and improving it. Schertz's time at SLU, starting this year, may well be the time his system gets to work fully as he expects. I expect a lot for this season, and do not think I will be disappointed.

Thank you HoosierPal
