Dr. Holly Hills
Holly cow.. what a ridiculous turn of events. I’m good with shutting preseason games down moving forward!
HoosierPal
Swope is good. Swope is very good. I saw him maybe 10 times as a Sycamore, twice at Arch Madness. He was the best offensive player on the floor tonight. He was deadly on the three, had a few nice drives, and at least one mid range jumper. Did I say Swope is good? Dotzler was a pleasant surprise. I watched the team warm up in the practice gym. They first ran some shadow plays and then shot threes. Adding 15 minutes of that warmup to the 19 minute game, my eight man rotation is Avila, Swope, Jimerson, Anya, Dotzler, Hughes, Casey and Thames. Warlick didn't practice this summer due to an injury. He was in street clothes tonight. Status unclear. gabriel, billiken_roy and pakapablo like this

White Pelican
Really excited for this season but I was a lot happier going in tonight than coming out. CenHudDude likes this
gobillsgo
Just got home… I’ll try not to overreact in either direction (injuries or performance). Robbie looked more annoyed with his injury than in pain, walked (with a slight limp) down the tunnel under his own power. Casey’s injury appeared to be non-contact on a fast break, and he was in obvious pain. Had to be helped down the tunnel, and was putting minimal weight on the leg. performance wise was all good. I was chugging the blue koolaid as fast as I could prior to the injuries. Here are some observations based off tonight only: The team in white appeared to be the starters: Swope, Dotzler, Gibby, Robbie, Anya. They had Mccottrey off the bench. Blue team was pretty much the rest of the roster. Starters put up something like 53 points in 19 minutes of action, and both teams were defending at what appeared to be real speed and intensity… it wasn’t an all star game effort. Swope looked like a first team all A10 talent. Knocks down open shots easily, can create (and make) his own shot, is strong enough to take it inside and score, and creates for others. He may be the most complete guard this program has had in a long time. When the Swope transfer was announced there was a Schertz quote saying something along the lines of “he would’ve been one of the top scorers in the country last season if he didn’t get hurt” and you could obviously see what he meant by that tonight. Gibby looks stronger, quicker, and shot lights out. I think he will be so much more effective now that teams will have other scoring options to worry about. Robbie was as advertised until the injury- just does everything so well. Dotzler looks like a stud. Quick, active, smooth lefty stroke from deep. Gonna be a really good A10 player. For sure could’ve helped Creighton this year. Anya is impressive. Strong and quick, with good touch for his size. on the blue team, Kobe, Casey, Thames, and LHJ all had multiple good moments. Casey knocked down a couple smooth threes for a big guy right before he got injured. hopefully the injuries aren’t serious, because the potential this team has is clear to see, even in a scrimmage. There’s a clear offensive game plan, with an appropriately constructed roster to execute it- something we haven’t seen in quite a while. majerus mojo, Dr Bird, BuiltFordBills and 1 other like this
ARon
At least this was scheduled far enough in advance that guys have 5 weeks to heal up before any real games. AMDG-Unit likes this
dlarry
Reading this doesn’t make me feel great. i thought the worst thing to happen was my 3 year old having a diarrhea blow out in my driveway while loading up to check it out. Forcing us to miss it. Turns out things got worse.

Swopes, jimerson, Avila and Anya were top shelf. They are starters imo. That leaves Dotzler, Johnson and Hughes to choose from. Id still take Johnson, but I wouldn't complain about either dorZler or Hughes Thames indeed is an athlete. Casey had a nice night till the injury. I was thinking hamstring but hoping a cramp. Bottom line looks like a fun team

Aquinas
No one has mentioned Max Pikaar?
Old guy
As we all know, Avila is possibly our most valuable player. It is entirely reasonable to getting him to wear a boot and crutches until he can have confirmation (via scan) that he has no fracture and no ligamentous injuries. In other words it is not good to treat the injury as a strain until you fully diagnose its extent. This way, which is a very good precautionary measure in my opinion, he will not be able to make his injury worse by continuing to practice before the scan. Don’t see how he sees the floor this year though if Schertz wants a 7 or 8 man rotation, barring major injuries. Aquinas likes this
billiken_roy
9 hours ago, Aquinas said: No one has mentioned Max Pikaar? as gobills says, looked raw. i agree i saw potential. in warm ups he was making his threes. but he seems physically weak and not agressive. for the tallest player on the team, we need more than that. if ever there seemed to be a good redshirt candidate he would be it. that said, in the now era of free agency and little if any build for the future, redshirt might me totally worthless. we spend the time to build him and then he moves on. right now, im not seeing him being a contributor. Yeah did CJS change out the team or retain the old crew? Good event to run for game simulation with a little extra juice of having a live crowd. Evolution of CJS needs to include building quality depth, better defense and scheduling. Good NIL+ on court success can help build the depth which helps with defense and being a winning program will help scheduling. Easy.

Aquinas
How did Brockhoff look? I see 2 points credited to him. He may need to play a significant role if these injuries are serious.

He was playing the point center spot on offense for the other team and crashing the boards for rebound opportunities. He is not Avila though. SluSignGuy
Some videos from last night: Women's Shootaround and Interviews Men's Entrance Men's Shootaround and Interviews Closing Remarks The Men's Basketball team staff requested that I do not post videos of the scrimmage, as opposing team scouts may use them. I also have the women's scrimmage recorded, but I am waiting to hear if it is okay to post these. I am also asking if I can post smaller clips of the two injuries. * Edit Fixed the Links
Westy03
In the 4 practices I’ve been to Brockhoff is an extremely good passer and a good shooter for his size. I could see him being the backup to Robbie. His defense, rebounding, and strength need to be improved.

Franchise_08
I thought it was interesting that everyone and I mean everyone only shot 3s during warmups. Zero mid range jumpers. Swope was consistently hitting from NBA. Fraz likes this
