2018-19 season

I think Travis should use a platoon system with two groups of 6 players each. One sub for each group of five ready to go in case of injury, foul trouble, etc. Have each group play roughly five minute segments until the mid point of the second half then go with the starting group and a sub rotation the final ten mins. I think the talent is so even across both groups that you have 10-12 players getting meaningful minutes throughout the year while minimizing the number of players disappointed about playing time.

I saw a similar situation work for the ABA Carolina Cougars in the '72-'73 season when they went 57-27 and got better as the year progressed. They started an offensive guard platoon of Steve "Snapper" Jones and Mack Calvin, then the second quarter, the defensive specialists, Ted "Hound Dog" McClain and Gene Littles played. Jones and Calvin would start the third quarter, then about the mid-point of that quarter, Larry Brown would decide which tandem was the most effective, go with that for a while, then the fourth quarter use a regular sub rotation.

Those four guards just wore other backcourts down. With all the talent Ford is accumulating, seems a shame that 4-5 of these guys will mostly sit. You can avoid foul trouble, lower injury risks and keep players happy. C'mon Travis, give it a shot.

what recent top team succeeded by playing 12 players nearly even minutes?   most teams find their top 7 or 8 use them the lion's share of minutes and might insert a couple of guys for token time each game.    that top 7 or 8 is won in practice.

i will bet at least 2-3 of our guys will average 30+ minutes per game this season.

Grinnell College is the only example I can think of.

We certainly have no need for something like that. We have the twin luxuries of talent and depth this season. We have a lot of possible combinations to throw at opponents. A platoon system would be pointless.

Wow, I’ve never seen the “next five”. That is ridiculous. Minus the 3 recent tournament teams, that lineup would probably beat any starting lineup this program has had the last 20 years.

*deep breath deep breath* ah screw it, this team is loaded!

This team is the deepest we've had in my lifetime, there is no real doubt about that. And depth is nice but it's not the end-all be-all for how good a team is. Id' rather have 8 excellent players than 12 really good players any day. Tell me how good the top 8 are going to be on this team and then I'll tell you how many games clear of the 2nd place A-10 team we'll be!

I also tend to believe that the depth will work itself out as a player or two may get hurt, suspended, whatever.

I find myself bouncing off of the walls reading thru this thread (I seldom wish for the summer and fall to speed up, but I find myself doing just that), who is game for some sort of billikens.com tailgate before the home opener? Probably wouldn't require much planning, but I would be willing to help plan.

I don’t need an excuse to get bombed but this would be a good one. I’m in

A reminder about the newcomers. https://www.a10talk.com/saint-louis-basketball-newcomer-primer/

There are 8 and that is a lot, so chemistry, roles, etc. will be a challenge. Also, even with the late additions, I'm still concerned about the shooting. But our depth, athleticism, rebounding, toughness should be tough to handle. Not sure I've ever been more excited about the start of a season.

those isabell highlights are the real deal. his passing could be huge this season and I see him fitting in with any lineup. probably our best shooter too?

So this is going to be a thing right?

I think we have to make this happen. And if there are enough of us, maybe we could make it a somewhat regular thing. It would be great if we were able to create a bit of a pregame scene to build some excitement heading into the games. Once we get closer to the season let’s definitely discuss and get a plan together.

Yeah, his court vision looks good. I expect him to be a bit out of control at times, but very creative. To average 3.5 assists when you score more than 20 ppg, is very impressive. I expect CG and HF to be routinely power dunking off of dishes from TI and JG. Isabell really likes that spin move in the lane.

Exactly right. This team is going to be hard to guard. I think teams will be forced to just pack it in, hope that we are off from deep, and fight like hell to keep us off of the boards.

It’s a shame Humphreys is still boarded up. Place would have been popping this upcoming season...

Another reason it would be great if this tailgate could gain some traction and become a somewhat regular thing.

Kentucky used a platoon system during the year Towns, WCS, and the Harrison twins were there, 2014-15.

We are not Kentucky...................................YET

i dont recall them using two sub teams of 6 players each and 12 players getting near equal minutes

edit i just checked they had 8 players playing 20-30 minutes per game and 2 more that played over 10 minutes a game.
