Are there salary cap/slot reasons for this?

They had suffered a lot of injuries, and needed someone to fill those minutes, but now that the season is over they are going to be getting those guys back and need to cut someone, and JGood was easiest to trim the roster down. Just my take. I also think he played well enough to get an offer from someone else.

I also believe goodwin will be fine.   The injured stars are coming back and Goodwin's time we would have been cut tremendously.   Let's hope his agent is good and gets him another opportunity

The grizzlies are up against paying penalties on the cap. They are trying to resign Luke Kennard at a lower rate as well.

They also have multiple draft picks that will be taking over the two way contract that Goodwin had.

No surprise he was let go. Several teams are expressing interest in Goodwin. He will still be eligible for a two way contract this upcoming season.

Jordan Goodwin has signed an exhibit 10 deal with the Los Angeles Lakers.  He is signed through training camp.  An exhibit 10 contract will allow him to get a bonus payment of over 70,000 dollars if he remains with the Lakers G-League affiliate for 60 days.

Here is a look at the Lakers Training camp roster.  They will bring in the max 21 players to camp.

Lakers Season Outlook

The Lakers are awful which is the type of team Goodwin should want to be on but...as long as they have Lebron and Davis their front office will feel the need to compete.  Lakers were the 7th seed last season and made no improvements in the offseason, aside from the draft.  Russell has been the subject of trade rumors for more than a year so they move him if they can.  Hachimura, Vanderbilt and Vincent have also been subjects of trade rumors.  Several teams that finished below the Lakers made significant improvements in the offseason.  The Lakers have very little room to maneuver their roster.  They are pretty much stuck with what they have and will be hard pressed to make the playoffs this season.

Lakers Guards

Russell is a decent NBA starter.  Austin Reaves is a nice piece but overrated by playing in the LA market.  Max Christie has shown flashes.  Gabe Vincent was good on Miami a couple years ago but has struggled with injuries.  Knecht will play some off guard in big lineups and will be a key piece off the bench.  Bronny will get playing time because of his dad.  Hood-Schiffino was their #1 pick in 23 but while excelling in the G league he has been an injury laden bust in his NBA career.  He is out currently with a back injury and will not be in camp.

2 Way Players

All the Lakers 2 ways are bigs.  Castleton is a resign.  He earned a two way contract for the Lakers last season and they brought him back.  He put up very good numbers in the G League, 16 and 10.  Hinson is an undrafted rookie out of Pitt.  He's 6'8 but a very good outside shooter in college.  He's old, at nearly 25, just a year younger than Goodwin.  Traore is 6'9 with a 7'3 wingspan.  He played in the top French league last year but went undrafted.

Camp Invites

Kylor Kelley is a 7 footer out of Oregon St.  He's been in the G League for the last 3 seasons and has been in training camps with the Raptors, Spurs, and Celtics.  Quincy Olivari is another undrafted 5th year out of Xavier.  He's a big time scorer and high level shooter, scored over 2100 points and shot over 38% for his career at Rice and Xavier.

Goodwin Outlook

Jordan will most likely start the season in the G League.  It isn't out of the realm of possibilities that he outplays his competition for a two way contract.  The Lakers don't have much to go up against.  The Lakers guards are still mostly young and with Vincent trying to work his way back, Christie & Reddish pushing for expanded roles, and Bronny needing reps Goodwin probably won't get much time to shine.  Best chance now is another team has an injury in camp and picks him up.  The Lakers may make a huge roster move, trading several pieces for 1 player, like Zach Levine, and then a roster spot opens up.  This would probably be Goodwin's best chance at a spot on the team.  Unfortunately, Goodwin's time in Phoenix did him no favors.  NBA execs changed their opinion on him quickly.  This will be a complete do over for Goodwin, he's in the same spot as he was as a rookie.  He does have service time under his belt so even though he won't get paid much this season in the G League, just the chance of getting another couple NBA games in this season will be well worth it down the road as his pension will increase with another added service year.  If he can't sniff the league this year, then next season overseas options should be explored.

We need to do a follow-up on the next @Midtown Madness episode. Neither of us knew the details of this deal.

The Lakers released Blake Hinson today, one of their 2 way deal players.  They have signed Christian Koloko to replace him.  Koloko was a 2nd round pick in 22 who put up good per minute numbers for the Raptors his first season.  He was sidelined with a serious blood clot issue last year but has been given the go ahead to play again.  The Lakers plan to use him in their big man rotation to start the season until Christian Wood comes back.

True, that is one of the roots of all evil "who you know not what you know."

He got almost no run this preseason. Must be so frustrating not to get a chance while nepo-baby plays in front of you.

lol love that “nepo baby.” Classic. Reminds me of Jack Black in “School of Rock” when he said he learned from Yo-Yo Ma’s cousin Lil’ Nepotis.

So Jordan Goodwin is now a free agent?

Yes.

He is eligible for a final two way contract having less than 4 years NBA experience.  Several teams have a two way opening, but at 26 years of age and a 31% career three point shooting average, I would doubt, but I would be happy, if a team wants to sign him to a 2 way.

There are also a handful of teams carrying less than 15 players, as of today.  The waiver wire is active as teams are cutting down right now, subtracting and adding players.  Oct 21 is the date rosters are to be set for the beginning of the season.

He's made a nice chunk of $$$ and hopefully enough tape exists that he can play overseas for less but still good money in one of the best leagues. FWIW I think he'd be a great coach and teacher once his playing days are over.
