The Lakers might have to make a decision at the end of the season about whether to sign him to a standard NBA contract so that he’s playoff eligible. The hosts discuss two key dates: (Saturday) March 1 and (Tuesday) March 4, and they speculate a roster spot will be opened on March 1, and that the Lakers may wait until March 4 before they fill that spot, probably by converting Goodwin's two-way contract. In the meantime, the Lakers have a series of back-to-back games, including tonight (after their victory last night against the Timberwolves). With the injury to Rui Hachimura and little nagging injuries to their big stars, the Lakers may rest Lebron and Luka tonight, in which case JGood might see a lot of minutes tonight, perhaps even a start. The Lakers Nations guys expect Goodwin's contract to be converted in less than a week from now ... brianstl, CenHudDude and SLUMedBilliken15 3 Quote

HoosierPal Posted March 3 Posted March 3 Goodwin rolled his ankle in the Lakers' 106-102 win over the Clippers on Friday and was unable to play a single minute in the fourth quarter. QUAILMAN Posted March 9 Posted March 9 Anyone catch the Lakers/Celtics game last night? Goodwin and Tatum did NOT appear to be the best of friends. I’m not aware of them being special buddies off the court, but with the number of times Tatum visited SLU during the Goodwin years and both of them being proud St. Louisan’s, I would assume they’d have some kind of relationship. There was some arm slapping and chippiness between the two at a few points during the game. Quote

I only noticed one incident where they appeared to be having words, but agree was surprised as well and assumed they were likely buddies. Guess not lol. Gooodwin started off the game very well with a couple of threes. He’s in the rotation and getting first quarter minutes when healthy. He was one of three players with a positive plus minus in a 10 point loss. However, I think it was in the third quarter, he had the worst sequence of probably anyone all night with a bad turnover then a bricked layup off of a great pass from LeBron. Supposedly he’s a lock for the playoff roster. Hopefully he keeps playing well and gets a multi year deal. Quote

That’s the only time this season that he has looked bad, and it all happened in about 60 seconds. the arm slapping early in the game was the main thing I noticed, but it just also seemed like there were some aggressive plays between the two, which I expected to see followed up with a slap on the butt or a grin, but that never happened. Who knows though, they are competitive dudes and maybe they saved the friendliness for after the game. Quote

When does eligibility run out for JGood? My sense is that he can play 10 more games on his two-way contract, but I don't know where to find the official countdown. My understanding is that players on a two-way contract can play 50 games per season at the NBA level, and this is prorated. JGood's first game with the Lakers was Feb 8, leaving 30+ games, so he's eligible for about 20, and now he has played in about 10, but there must be a better way to figure out how many more games before the Lakers are forced to make a decision. With Lebron injured and JGood seemingly the best player off the bench recently, he's likely to get a lot of playing time. Pay the man. Quote
SLUMedBilliken15 Posted March 12 Posted March 12 As much as I love Goodwin and hope he gets a standard contract, this series of plays by Goodwin on 3/8 vs Boston would make even me hesitant to sign him sooner than I needed to. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DdujEwHgiDVI&ved=2ahUKEwjp_tDD1YOMAxV4AHkGHSvjLGYQwqsBegQIJxAG&sqi=2&usg=AOvVaw34XyRYfgNdu3cSniIOWN4j Quote

Goodwin has been playing great for them. Full stop. He's played a ton of minutes because he's helping them win. Reddick has said he's a part of their rotation going forward. Goodwin is at the margins of the NBA for one reason: shooting. At most other things, he's above average, even for the NBA (rebounding, team defense, intangibles) Quote

They currently have 15 + 3 two way players on the roster. The Lakers will have to release players from their 15 man roster to add any two way players. They have a HUGE hole at the backup 5. They signed backup center Alex Len at the trade deadline, and he has given them absolutely nothing. The other two 2-way contracts are centers Koloko and Jemson. Both have been less then impressive in their token appearances. The popular rumor is that Len and Reddish will be released and Goodwin plus a C will be added. Doncic's dislike for playing defense makes Goodwin almost shoe in. In the playoffs the defense is ratcheted up, making a solid defender in the post imperative. The Lakers may be scouring the G League for a C to add prior to the roster deadline It will all work out in the days/weeks to come. Playoffs start in about a month. cgeldmacher 1 Quote

Not sure the specific number of games he had left, but I recall reading from someone who is real clued in on NBA rules back when Goodwin first got called up, and I believe they said he had 19 games he could be on the roster before the lakers need to make a decision (send back down, or give a real contract). I also believe that simply being on the roster, whether or not he plays, counts as one of those 19 games. So there was one game early on where he was dressed but got no playing time, and then he just missed a few games for injury but was still on the roster, so if I’m not mistaken, all those games would count against the 19. AMDG-Unit Posted March 12 Posted March 12 Regardless it's been fun seeing a Billiken interact with LeBron and Luka, hitting shots after they feed him highlight reel assists. As a Mavs fan prior to February 1, this SLUvenia connection has been a bittersweet yet still pleasurable to watch. BigMacSLU88 1 Quote
