  1. There aren't many NBA fans on the site so I figured I'd write something up about the Wizards and Goodwin's chances of making the NBA Goodwin signed an exhibit 10 contract with the Washington Wizards. What is an Exhibit 10 Contract? An Exhibit 10 contract is a one year non guaranteed minimum contract which gives an NBA team 2 options. They can turn the contract into a 2 way contract, or they can release the player but designate him an affiliate player for their G league team. The player would be then awarded a bonus up to 50k if he stays with the G League affiliate for 60 days. So an Exhibit 10 contract allows teams to build their G League teams and entice players to stay in the G league with bonus money instead of going overseas for a higher salary. Salary in the G League is about 26k, so a 50k bonus is pretty lucrative to a player who doesn’t want to go overseas. What is a 2 Way Contract? Teams can have 2 players on their roster signed to 2 way contracts, and are granted extra roster spots for them, so a team can have 17 roster positions instead of 15. Player on 2 way contracts receive 75k per year while on the G League roster and can spend up to 45 days a season with an NBA team. While with the NBA team the player is paid the NBA minimum salary by the day, so if the player spends the max amount with an NBA team they can make around 200k per year. While not an ideal situation for all athletes this is the next step for players on an Exhibit 10 Contract. Wizards Roster Composition PG Aaron Holiday SG Brad Beal SF Kyle Kuzma PF Rui Hachimura C Thomas Bryant Bench SG/SF Kentavius Caldwell Pope SF Davis Bertans C Montrezl Harrell SF Deni Avidja SG/SF Corey Kispert SF Chandler Hutchison PF/C Daniel Gafford PF Anthony Gill SG Caleb Homesly PF Isaiah Todd Free Agents Robin Lopez, C UFA Ish Smith, PG: UFA Raul Neto, PG: UFA Alex Len, C UFA Isaac Bonga, SF: RFA Cassius Winston, PG: RFA 2 Way Player Garrison Mathews, SG: RFA 2 Way Player Roster Outlook The Wizards roster is very much in flux. Their plans obviously center around Beal. Question remains if he will he stay with the team. So they are trying to gain more payroll flexibility, while acquiring more tradable assets, and preparing to possibly acquire another star piece to pair with Beal or dismantle the whole team if Beal chooses to leave. There are many trade scenarios out right now involving the Wizards, acquiring among others Pascal Siakam, Spencer Dinwiddie, or even Damian Lillard. They have plenty of options to trade, Harrell, Pope, Bryant & Hutchison are all on expiring deals. They have a logjam of similar players at the wing and the 4. Bertans has a large contract and will be expendable with Avidija & now Kispert at the wings. Kuzma could also be a trade piece as the Wizards will be hard pressed to play both he and Hachimura at the same time, even in a small ball lineup. Hutchison’s role on the roster seems in doubt since they have drafted players at his positions in the first round the last 2 seasons. Of their UFAs only Raul Neto & Alex Len really played well for them last year. They are somewhat thin at C so resigning Len at a minimum price might be a good idea but he has probably played his way into a multi year deal. Neto has a ceiling as a backup PG and the Wizards have a need for depth there as well but really need a starting PG. THeir restricted FAs only Garrison Matthews is possibility for a resign. He’s a sharpshooting wing who the Wizards have developed as an undrafted FA the past two seasons. Winston and Bonga were underwhelming last season and will most likely be let go. Their other 2 way player, Caleb Homsely never made it to Wizards last year and faces a logjam of players at his position on the roster. The Wizards glaring deficiencies are rebounding and defense. Their roster is now filled with wings & small ball 4s and 5s. Of their new additions I would only expect Pope to stay, because he is now their strongest perimeter defender by far. The other will be moved to acquire a starting PG, and a rebounder who can space the floor. So Holiday, Beal, Hachimura, Bryant, Pope, Avidja, Kispert and Gafford are now the core of the team with the remaining roster being expendable or deep bench players. Goodwin’s Fit While I have doubted Goodwin’s ability to make an NBA roster, his agent has made all the right moves thus far and put him in about the best position he could be in signing with the Wizards. The Wizards have no PG depth, so Goodwin will get plenty of reps as a ballhandler in Summer League and training camp. While the Wizards have tons of wings, they all play the same. Good to great 3 point shooters who play little defense and can be secondary ballhandlers. As a wing Goodwin fills an entirely different role as a defender and rebounder who never needs the ball in his hands. Finally Goodwin’s two best assets, rebounding and defense, are what the Wizards sorely lack. Even their bigs can’t rebound well. Hachimura is more of a combo forward, Bryant is soft on the boards and Gafford is more of an athletic shot blocking big who gets outmuscled at the rim. Goodwin has a couple other huge things going for him. Wizards GM Tommy Sheppard has shown he gives opportunities to undrafted FAs and will readily shake up his roster during the season so even if Goodwin doesn’t make the team out of training camp he may get a shot down the road. Also it doesn’t look like any of the 2 way players will be returning so Goodwin, Isaiah Todd, Jay Huff will be competing for those spots against no returners. You can’t discount the relationship he has with the Wizards star Brad Beal either. New Head coach Wes Unseld Jr not only has already professed to being a defense first coach but also has a SLU connection, he is Earl Austin Jr’s cousin. It looks like Goodwin is all in on his NBA dream and won’t consider overseas for awhile. I predict he earns a 2 way contract with the Wizards and will make his NBA debut sometime this season on a rebuilding Wizard’s squad.

  2. If Nesbitt comes off the bench, that lasts no more than 2 weeks. He's one of the most talented recruits ever to put on a SLU uniform.

  4. Thatch is starting. He was the best player on the team after they returned from COVID. I expect a starting line-up of Collins, Nesbitt, Thatch, Perkins and Okoro. Jimerson and Linssen the first two off the bench. Hargrove and the transfers round out the rotation.

  5. I am sure I can dig up some old posts, but as I've said - TJ is gonna be the x-factor this year. I am so excited to see him out there. Also, dont be surprised if Yuri comes in as an elite PG. He's been very good with some up and down performances, but year 3 is going to be special imo.

  6. If he can focus on rebounds and get to a decent enough rebounding average, he won’t come off the court.

  7. Agreed. There’s a time and a place for that stuff. No matter what side of the aisle you’re on, I think we can all agree this board is infinitely better when we don’t talk about politics. Let’s just let it go. My Starting 5 Prediction: Yuri Nesbitt Hargrove Perkins Okoro i feel like 4 of the 5 are locks. T think the 5th starting spot is between Hargrove and Thatch, and Jimerson will start the year off the bench.

  8. How about we don't bog down the entire board with this back and forth? If you see something you don't like, move on and block the person. No need for politics here.

  14. https://bulinews.com/news/9421/leverkusen-linked-with-sargent-and-kehrer Another article linking Leverkusen to Sargent. FWIW, Leverkusen’s head of scouting previously held the same position at Werder and was responsible for signing Sargent. The transfer window closes on August 31st.

  15. COVID is a valid concern. If for nothing else than the fact the fed has no clue what it is doing and keeps changing the rules and advisories. Currently, the CDC changed its "high" rating on countries showing 500 new cases per 100,000 people. That's .005 percent or one half of one percent which now pushes you into a "high" rating. Really? That's a rather small risk as opposed to "high" if you ask me. At least we have almost three months until the season kicks off.

  16. I wouldn't be so quick to agree Collins is one of four who can hit the three WITH CONSISTENCY. Collins was 11 of 30 his freshman year, then 7 of 29 last year. The only guy on the team that shot less of a percentage was Phil Russell (anyone with attempts). Collins MUST be a scoring option this year. It's his third year, time to shine. I don't care if its threes or drives to the hoop or stop-n-pops. He MUST add something to keep the defenses honest or its four-on-five all over again. Lofton scores. Gilyard scores. Carry scored. Crutcher scored. Jett scored. Mitchell scored. Hines did not. Polk did not. Plus Yuri will likely be there at the end of games and needs to improve his FT percentages as well. Maybe it was bum wrists for two years, I don't know. We have the quintessential PG ... he has to elevate his game to make this all work however.

  17. Hope you are all right on Nesbitt. If he starts as a freshman from day one over the likes of Thatch he's a pretty good player.

  18. I agree the facts back up your opinion of levels such as mid major. Had coach coach Grant in the 19/20 season made it to the final 4 I believe coach Grant would be a good coach at the highest level. Unfortunately because of COVID we will never know. Coach Ford has proven he is a good coach at the mid major level but struggled in the big 12. To move up in coaching status both coaches need to be competing for first and second place every season in the A10 and get to the big dance consecutive seasons and make a deep run. Both coaches are young and will get there.

  19. I think the problem is that our brains have been trained to see "mid" and think "middle" — "mediocre." While that's what "mid" usually means, it's not supposed to mean that in the context of "mid-major." It really only means "not in a conference that plays football in the FBS." Being mid-major (actually, in a mid-major conference) doesn't mean a program can't be more successful than a so-called high-major (in a FBS conference) program, but there are hurdles to get over, as the FBS conference members have much more money to utilize. So, if you read 3-Star's statement about Grant as, "He is a very good coach for a school that doesn't have FBS football," would you still pick that bone?

  20. Agreed on that Skip. He has a Dempsey feel but still has much to learn. Like the upside and attitude though in a game at Azteca.....wait, sorry that was in Las Vegas. Hard to tell with the make-up of fans. Looking forward to the day 40,000 American fans head to Azteca and overwhelm the home fans. Kudos to the boys though. Very difficult game for such a young inexperienced squad. Only criticism I have is the play of our central midfield for most of the night. Maybe it was by design to crowd the middle and play guys who were less-apt to make offensive plays and more to destroy threats and get the ball back, but man we had no possession throughout the game in the middle of the field. Guys were on top of each other constantly, they rushed the ball only to create a turnover, etc. Again, they didn't give a goal though so defensively they got something right. Credit for Berhalter making those changes late and bringing on guys who had that attacking/playmaking ability to bring some composure and put pressure on Mexico. It all worked in the end.

  21. Taj, I have to agree with you about Grant's coaching ability. A few years back in a game at the Fetz, Dayton was suffering at some point in the game and Grant let it continue even though he had timeouts available. It was so bad that I remember it to this day With regard to the Top 144 listing, the next two teams ranked higher than UD are TX-San Antonio and then Stony Brook. I would take UD, minus 10 against either of those teams and I am not a UD fan... This calls into question the expertise of the owners of this site, but as I've said in the past, the site at least give us some real CBB to discuss
