cheeseman
Correct. And don't forget you can also not judge Crews for the 20+ years he was a head coach before arriving at SLU Some would agree with this - not me.
cheeseman
John Reddon? He was not a walk on per se. He did not have tryout he was given a place on the team automatically. Spoon brought him on with grants and other monies through the university. Apparently, schools did this at times when there are no schollies left and player really wants on the team and the coach really wants him. John R could have gone to school elsewhere on a schollie - he was a legit D1 - perhaps lower level - prospect.

Recruited to come on the promise he would have a place on the team, but no scholarship. The player hopes to prove his worth and be awarded a scholarship down the road. I believe John was given a scholarship his senior year. He came on at the end of his senior season and made the all tournament team at the miracle in Memphis. I wonder if he was held back by his non-scholarship status?

slufan13
The truth is obviously somewhere in the middle: Crews should get credit for doing a pretty good job of guiding the team during the 2012-13 season. Yes, the players were all RM's but I give Crews an A. It was good enough to earn him national coach of the year so that seems like an A to me. At least in my opinion, Crews did fine in 2013-14. I'd give him a B+. It's still the second best season we've had in the modern era in terms of NCAA seeding and final AP ranking, but maybe it could have been more. Crews obviously deserves an F for last season. But you know who else get's an F for that season is Majerus as it was his failed senior (Glaze and Manning) and junior classes (McBroom, Drew, Carter) that turned the season into complete crap. There is only so much that freshmen can be expected to do and we've seen that many times through SLU history (Clags/Highmark class, Evans/Loe/Jett/McCall class). To ignore the failures of RM here is just ignorant. What grade will he get this year is anyone's guess. Many seem to have already have given him an F though which is the odd thing to me. I for one am willing to let it play out... I'd give Crews an A+ for his work the year Majerus died. Even if all he did was get out of the way and let the team coach itself. He did a good job leading the team through a hard time. I think the team really underachieved in 13-14 but I'll also admit the talent on the bench was lacking and that's not really on Crews. Now, there were some blowout wins during that long win streak where I think everyone agreed Crews could have played the bench more. Just saving 2-3 minutes a game on Jett and Evans could have made a difference. Last year Crews gets an F for sure. I also share your belief that Majerus deserves credit for the failure. But my problem last year was that the team regressed significantly as the season goes on and to me that is 100% on Crews. Also, I did not expect to come in and have 2-3 all-rookie players with one of them landing on the 2nd or 3rd all A-10 team, but after all our success, all of Crews' awards (deserved or not), and all our publicity (we got more than most top 25 teams), I really thought we would have landed a better recruiting class than that. Have I given up on them? Not at all (except maybe Jolly). but I did expect our freshmen to be better than that as freshmen.
pakapablo
QUESTION: Is SLU basketball coach Jim Crews on the hot seat this year? STRAUSS: I wouldn't put him there. SLU knew it was going to deal with a rough transition following the 2013-14 team. Recruiting has been OK, but less than prolific. Let's see what last season's freshmen look like as sophomores. The A-10 may come back to them a little bit. The loss of a ball-handler and a rebounding presence were obvious last season. McBroom's transfer following diminished playing time hinted at other issues as well. Either way, SLU needs to do better than 11 wins. (I expect they will.) The better question may ultimately be: How much longer does Crews want to coach?

slu72
Wow, that's way over the top for a guy with a coaching record that barely tops .500.
SluSignGuy
This is petty, but I like that in a tweet that encourages individuals to follow Jim Crews does not include Jim Crews' twitter handle @CoachJimCrews
brianstl
What is that tweet actually even promoting? Does it want you to follow Crews around campus? Another great job by the people marketing the program.
TheChosenOne
Is that aimed at recruits? The basketball program as well as the entire athletic department needs to do a much job marketing especially in utilizing social media. It seems pretty obvious that larger programs must utilize graphic designers in putting together some pretty slick looking graphics (that they send to recruits and put on social media), and we get crap like this. JMM28
Who jerked off on a picture of Crews, turned the black light on, took a picture, and then posted this nonsensical ?
slufan13
Seriously that looks like something that would get sent out after a long night of drinking. I don't even know what it means. brianstl
So the two most notable accomplishments of our program's social media presence are this tweet and putting a player on the official twiiter account to recruit a player in violation of NCAA rules. SLU_Nick
This reminds me of a Blue Crew free Tshirt giveaway in 2004-2005. I think the tag line was: "The road to the final four begins and ends with St Louis University Basketball" I couldnt even accept the free shirt...too embarassing. Pistol
It really is a bizarre tweet. It appears to be for nothing - no date, no place, no context. It's just an open invite, almost as if Crews will just be wandering campus like some late-60s guru trying to start a cult by sharing his enlightenment with others for free. Then, before you know it, he's got 12 undergraduate wives who left their sororities to follow him, recruit others, and start a commune on public lands about 2 hours from campus. Then things start to get ugly after several acid trips too many, too little food, and too few practical skills for living in the wilderness. So they turn to robbery and prostitution. Then a couple of the wives who remain somewhat lucid have the sense to defect in the middle of the night, hitchhike back to the city and alert the police. Then you've got a month-long standoff with a couple dozen dirty hippies, half of them claiming to be Guru Crews' wives, and a couple dozen state troopers and federal agents. It's just not going to end well. All because of one misbegotten tweet.
