Clifton Moore and Al Durham both asked Indiana to release them from letters of intent on March 22.  Archie Miller was hired 3 days later.  Not only did he not release them, he waited over a week to meet with them and convinced one of them to stay.  He's still working on the other one.

This. If you're the only school allowed to talk to a recruit and you don't take advantage of that at least briefly to try to convince them to stay, you're a moron. If they still say no, then grant the release.

Totally different situation.  Underwood has had ample time to convince the kids to stay, you are holding them against their will at this point. You can't pitch future recruits and tell their parents that you have their best interests at heart, when you are showing that you just care about your program. That's a bad way to start the Underwood era, and he's doing it to 2 in-state kids, no less. It's legal, but wrong and everybody knows it.

Does anyone really believe the number one concern of the coaches is the players' best interest? I have no doubt that the players' best interest is important to most coaches, but number one concern is success of the program while it is under their stewardship. That is what is their best interest and will lead to higher pay and better jobs in the future. If a players best interest gets in the way of that, it's not going to be the top concern.

True, but if a player doesn't want to play for you or be there, that can cause problems for the team off court.

If Illinois holds Tilman they know he has to perform or else NBA won't come calling, then he might have to leave, sit out a year, and play for a program he wants. So technically they can force 5*'s like him to play well but it isn't the right thing to do

Again, it's a monster stretch to suggest that not releasing kids within 5 days (Tillmon) or 1 day (Picket) is causing some long term irreparable harm for underwood. They will both get their release in the near future and all will be forgotten.

If Underwood thinks Martin crossed a line with Tilmon I would do everything in my power to screw over Martin.

Look, Walker was retained to keep the signed recruits. You don't keep Walker around if you didn't think you might lose kids. You often lose signees with a coaching change.  Holding them hostage because the new coach failed to sell them is wrong.  Some schools may wait to release until the new coach has been hired and made his pitch, but this is wrong.

This article about Pickett had an interesting blurb. It said that Pickett showed interest in joining Goodwin at SLU, but was never offered a scholarship. Pickett was already verbally committed to Illinois by the time Goodwin committed if this is true.

Hard to know if that is just poor journalism given the timeline (Pickett was an Illini commit before Ford was even hired if I recall) or if Ford had no interest. I doubt it was no interest as we were basically looking for an entire roster turnover when Ford started here.

When Pickett committed to Illinois, Crews might have still been screwing around deciding whether Goodwin was worthy of a scholarship. So I wouldn't be surprised at all if Crews was beaten to the punch on Pickett too.

The thing you are missing is that Underwood really does not care about anybody but himself or else this would not be his third school in a year.

At the time, 2 scholarships were available.  Goodwin and French covered the two.

Hate coaches that over-commit.....maybe that is why he was not offered.

Take that commitment, and you are telling your team before the season that one player will be pushed out.

His verbal to Illinois was mid January of 2016 based on the articles.  He seemed locked into Illinois with Tilmon and Groce so sure there was no reason for Ford to offer since he was a strong verbal.

Athletic scholarships like academic scholarships, should be performance based.
