Miles looked much more confident and physically prepared for this season. DR was not aggressive which was a little odd to see. The pairing of Bartley and Reynolds, though limited, appeared to be pretty effective. I liked what I saw out of MC, RA, and MY. The first half jitters made this game closer than it should have been, but I think it was a nice start to the season.

The key halftime adjustment by Crews was a huge key in this game. Jolly, Gillmann and Neufeld were not very successful in stopping Carroll in the first half. He was either scoring or finding the open shooter when we doubled. Crews went smaller on him in the second half and pretty much neutralized Carroll.

For a first game...I was impressed with their defense and they seemed to have a good sense of the new shot clock. They will only get better and I am still saying the press underestimating the Bills is a good thing. They look to be more experienced and more controlled. JC did a good job today too.

6'8 Brennan Schofield was in attendance.

We should get that Carroll kid to transfer here.

Good game by Miles Reynolds. Getting to the basket and the only one playing any defense on the perimeter. No jumpshot will hurt him against better opponents but his added strength is letting him muscle past defenders and get shots off to get foul shots.

Reggie had a ncie game as well. Solid rebounding and defense.

Malik slowed down for the most part and it helps his game. When he rushes and gets sloppy he gets into trouble. 13,7,5 is a very nice line.

Crawford was ok, couldn't defend. Bartley, Roby and Yacoubou weren't defending either. Ash has to finish his gimmies. I like his post up game as a change of pace.

More shots for Gillmann. Less playing time for Jolly.

Still have no idea who the primary ballhandler is.

We did what we should do. This will be our worst opponent of the year. Tought test at SIUE. Harris wants to make his mark early.

There was stuff I liked in the game. That said I fear what is going to happen when we won't out athlete a team. Also, this will probably be the only game we win shooting under 25% from 3 this year.

so you figure this game is the sign for what's to come from the 3?

OK I was there, I liked what I saw. Despite their poor stats and ranking Hartford was not a total pushover, they had a very good 3 pt scorer, Graham, which got 2-3 and scored 13. Pancake scored 15 with 2-4 3 pointers, and Carroll scored 14.

We did well and have 5 players that stand well above all else and may become starters for the season:

Crawford, played 29 minutes, scored 17, 4 rebounds, 7-8 Fts.

Reynolds, played 27 min, scored 16, 1 rebound, 2 assists, 2 steals, 7-8 FTs.

Yacoubou played 36 min, scored 13, had 7 rebounds, 3 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, 3-7 FTs.

Agbeko played 26 min, scored 11, had 8 rebounds, 2 assist, 2 steal, 1 block, 3-7 FTs.

Yarborougn played 31 min, scored 13, 7 rebounds, 5 assist, 1 steal, 3-5 FTs.

The rest did not play that long and did not do that well. We only had 7 TOs vs 16 for Hartford.

Bartley did not do that well. He scored 7 and got 4 fouls. Let's hope he improves in future games. Brett Jolly did a block, 2 rebounds, and a couple of good screens, scored 2. He only played 10 min. This was better than what I expected from him.

In all, if this game shows anything is that we have at least 5 players that can perform in court. This season may not be as bad as a lot of the posters in this board think.

The fire alarm snafu is to be expected with all of the popcorn sales kiosks they have this year. I hope it does not become a recurrent feature of these games.

I enjoyed the game.

Yes.

Alot of positives and negatives can be drawn from this game:

Positives:

We scored alot of points!

We settled on a rotation

We had balanced scoring

No injuries

We showed patience breaking the press and scoring layups

We may have found a point guard

I like having the ball in MR and MC's hands down the stretch b/c of their FT shooting

We had only 1 shot clot violation

We won the game and the outcome was never really in doubt

Negatives:

We need to play better defense - tonight was horrible

We will need more than Reggie inside and Jolly and Austin are not the answers

We need to get Neufeld minutes

We need to get our best defender in the game -- Roby

We need to work our best shooter into the game -- Bartley

We will have another bad year if we rely upon Ash

Did I mention how bad our defense was?

Nonetheless, tonight was a decent performance. Most all the guys improved from last year. We now have a foundation upon which Crews can build - last year, we never did. I am hopeful and expect the defense will come around as it is largely based upon effort, desire and coaching.
