Transfers - 2024

A few players, including Davion Bradford, have already hit the portal, but transfer season will crank up soon as teams get eliminated from conference tournaments. New this year, players will only have 45 days to enter the portal from the moment the regular season ends, which is March 17, as opposed to the 60 day window of the past. Players will have until May 1 to enter their name in the portal.

Made sense to do this.  Get all the madness out of the way fast.

How many players will we have hit the portal?

With the NCAA being pretty toothless against multi-time transfers now, I wouldn’t be surprised to have most of the roster enter every off-season from here on out, just to gauge what their markets are.

That would be prudent for players from lesser programs looking for better options.

One thing to note, once a player enters the portal the school is no longer bound to honor their scholarship.  So, they better be sure they have something guaranteed before giving up their scholarship.  It’s hit a lot of players that end up playing down a level, especially in football.

During Ford's 8 years, the average number of players leaving the program prematurely is 3.5. (The number disregards players who did not use their Covid year such as Collins.)  That is the floor.  Add departing seniors and the number reaches 1/3 to 1/2 the roster, depending on the year.  With NIL now full blown, NIL will also influence the numbers.

You're missing the biggest factor, not winning.

-has their season already ended or are they injured and not playing again?

In the case of Bradford, he never suited up for New Mexico State. In mid December he said he was leaving with the intention of playing again next year - very strange. That kid's stock has really plummeted from his successful freshman debut in the Big 12.

Any bets on how long it will take someone to sue over this, and all restrictions get removed from the transfer portal by judicial action?

Beat me to it. I expect down the road that players will be able to transfer between halves of a game.

He lost Jimmy Bell, Momo Cisse and Lassina Traore. All guys that could, if nothing else protect the rim. I know it's a ridiculous thing to say, but IMO that's the difference between 14th and 6th place and maybe a debate of the heat of his seat, it would still be very hot, but you could have an honest conversation with either outcome being a possibility.

I mentioned this in earlier post Sodie went from Assoc Coach at VA to Director of Scouting. With the portal this is one important position & replacing a recruiter on the staff. Kind of making someone like Tate present role obsolete.

Responsibilities would include trying to identify potential transfer candidates prior to declaring to get the earliest jump on them when they do declare, especially those in the lower major schools, review game tapes on them to ascertain if they are any good & would they fit in to your system-both in attitude & skill,  & what is it going to cost you in NIL.

It's whole new ball game, but it is what is.

-which is why CFord's Plan is so crucial

-there still needs to be an evaluation of who is going to get an NIL offer so while agree recruiting is changed there are some parts that are unchanged

That isn't Soderberg's role at all.

He’s officially “Director of Scouting”, which means he’s on the road watching UVA’s next opponent most of the year. You won’t see him on the bench at many games and doesn’t have much to do with recruiting. Helps Bennett devise game plans and identify strengths/holes in the upcoming opponent.

Drew Steffe, who I believe is a kid that Forte was recruiting for us, announced his transfer from Texas Tech at semester. He never stepped on the floor for Tech.

A position dedicated solely to evaluate active D1 talent with portal eligibility strikes me as a valid and valuable job given today’s landscape of free agency. The pros employ scouting departments to evaluate college and free agent talent, and I’ll wager top schools have folks whose sole job is scouting the ranks of likely portal entrees. Is there anybody on our current staff whose primary job is scouting potential portal targets?

Not good for teams expected to fire their coach.  If Ford's going to be canned, do it quick.  And have the new coach hired by the following week so he has time to "work" the portal.

Just information, but after the 22-23 season, and before the 23-24 season, 61 D1 coaching jobs changed hands.  Some were retirements, some were fired.  So there were plenty of portal situations as you have described.
