slu72 Posted May 3, 2023 Share Posted May 3, 2023 Great interview with Harriman. It brought to mind what a friend of mine from Columbus told me after the Memphis game in the opening round. He was sitting only two rows behind the Billiken bench. We were having drinks after the game and he said that Harriman pretty much called most of the substitutions for us. It surprised him that Majerus allowed an AC that much freedom. Since we won he must have done a good job. Since we’ve been critical of Ford’s substitutions maybe he’ll allow Harriman the same role. I think it was Will Clyburn. Harry described the kid as skinny - too small for the NBA. Clyburn was a big time JUCO player and it was reported that we would likely land him. So, it lines up with what Harry was saying. He unexpectedly went to Utah and then transferred to Iowa State. The kid was a hell of a player. He averaged 16 ppg and 7 RPG during his two year career. I used to watch him play and think of what could have been here. Instead of a team that made the Round of 32, we might be looking at a Sweet 16 or Elite 8 type of team - putting him with Kwamain and co. would have been awesome. He was normally frozen in his game stance. occasionally, rickma might stop the sub as he approached the scorer's table and send him back to the bench, i.e. he had final decision on subs. but normally i agree he didnt bother with worrying about who was playing or not. i actually think travis does the same only he interferes more often with the move being made or interjects his own sub. move. but usually he is allowing the designated asst to follow a likely preplanned substitution rotation. I suspect Harriman had a pretty good idea prior to each game when the substitutions were going to happen. Like a lot of coaches, RM would typically sub in one or two players around the first media timeout. Then another round of substations 2-3 minutes after the first media timeout. Yep. It was rare that Majerus got involved in substituting. And Ford should turn that over to Harriman day one. He stinks at it. His knee jerk substituting of a few select players was infuriating. And his carte Blanche 2 foul rule needs to go. Now on to the next question, whose Spurs Jersey did Majerus keep in his hotel room and why? Miller played for the Spurs but well after this takes place. None of his other guys played in San Antonio.
