slu72
Interview with Tatum from last night: http://kentucky.scout.com/story/1540723-aw-video-tatum-at-eybl-lexington-day-1?s=48#.VTscKiq528o.twitter No talk of slu because nobody bothered to ask him. Says he has no favorites. Damn interview asked something like, what's it like being recruited by these 3 programs UNC, DU, and UK? SOB completely ignored SLU. Shock 'em, Jayson, stay home. Shock 'em, Jayson, stay home. Which may play into our hands. Jayson is thinking of staying home because he knows he can put his hometown and his hometown school in the limelight. Forgetting or ignoring SLU is just a reminder of what he could bring to his hometown
TheChosenOne
I wouldn't use this line of argument. There were 3 UK guys in the NBA all-star game. Haha, that was a pretty dumb post. The argument is that players like Davis, Wall, and Cousins were going to be big time pros regardless of what college they spent one season at. There is no question Duke and UK are "producing" NBA players and have an impressive list of players in the NBA, but when it is primarily with kids who are only in college for a season (for Cal and recently with K) because they have to be, is it really that big of an accomplishment. I can see why that pitch works with elite recruits (they all want to be in the NBA and make $), but it is obviously flawed. These elite recruits would be top 10 picks out of high school if they could enter the draft and that was being coached by high school, AAU, and youth coaches not Cal or K. That's not counting Patrick Patterson, Terrence Ross, and Eric Bledsoe, among others. Terrence Ross went to the University of Washington if I'm correct. Terrence Jones did go to Kentucky and has been a respectable NBA player, but not something that should make FBJT choose Kentucky.

Thanks I was about to elaborate but this is exactly what I mean. It's funny how all the "experts" talk about all the talent coming out of Kentucky and Duke. No, the talent is just passing through those places, the players don't get significantly better by going to play for scumbag Cal or K. They could play anywhere they want and still be top draft picks. 3star_recruit
Davis, Wall, and Cousins were going to be big time pros regardless of what college they spent one season at. I also believe this. But for some reason the one and doners don't appear to believe it. If Ivan Rabb and Malik Newman and Jayson Tatum can show their peers there's another way, the recruiting landscape could change overnight. Bills_06
Yea I guess the pitch of "Look at these guys who came here and went to the NBA. I can call up Derrick Rose and he will visit if you want because we are friends" can look nice to some kids. Saint Tatum is smart enough and has enough smart people around him to know better. What Coach Cal actually should be saying is "Look, you are good enough where you can be drafted right out of high school but there is a rule that you have to wait a year. You can come to Kentucky with other top recruits and not get as much playing time as going somewhere else which would most likely be better for your development. You will win a lot of games but likely not win a national championship because even with the best talent each year, I'm not a great X and Os guy. Odds are if you come to Kentucky, all your college wins will be vacated in the future too." Doubt that will work as well though.

If Ivan Rabb and Malik Newman and Jayson Tatum can show their peers there's another way, the recruiting landscape could change overnight. Maybe, at least for the true one and done guys (it really is a raw deal that those kids can't just jump straight to the NBA). There are reasons why the top players go to the top schools in the top conferences and that won't change, but maybe that won't mean as much for the kids who will only be on campus for a handful of months before cashing NBA paychecks. My concern is that seeing what UK and Duke did this season gets these elite recruits to kind of build these super teams for their one year in college to make a run at a title. Although the 2015 class is all over the board (top 20 kids headed to LSU (2), Maryland, Cal, Mississippi State, Marquette, UNLV, and Florida State). thetorch
Playing for Uk has hurt more players draft stock than it has helped. For every Cousins and Davis there is a Michael Kidd Gillchrist.

3star_recruit
MKG was a top 5 high school player that went 2nd in the draft. But I agree that there are examples where being just another horse in the stable has hurt a UK player's draft status. Oddly enough it's players that stay. Andrew Harrison and Willie Cauley Stein would have been better off declaring after their freshman years. Limited minutes and intense, prolonged media scrutiny destroyed any upside these kids ever had.

If they went to the pros out of high school they might have been top-20 picks. Cauley-Stein went from top-3 down to late first-round, but he's a sure fire top 10 guy now. I'd put Tatum ahead of those guys coming in, but going to UK does not guarantee that you will increase your draft stock. In fact, I don't know of anyone who became more well thought of after spending time under Cal. Coach K has a slightly better track record of making guys look good, but there's still a ceiling effect going on there. Playing out of your mind on a roster with a solid supporting cast is how you move up. That being said, I'd guess Tatum is a guaranteed top-3 pick barring injury, regardless of where he goes. I'm not convinced anyone at Tatum's skill level is going to see material improvement in their game from one year in college, whether they're practicing at SLU, Duke, Kentucky, or anywhere else. Tatum and players like him are ready for the NBA now, and the NBA is where they'll improve. So at the end of the day I think the argument is the same as it ever was: the bright lights and vast resources of Duke v. the hometown legend at SLU. Two very different offerings - it'll depend on what he personally values more, as neither school can compete against the strength of the other. RiseAndGrind
Can't figure out where SLU coaches are this period. Anyone know? Answered my own question. They're watching Tatum. Crazy that all 4 schools feel great about getting Tatum. Chad Lykins @CLykinsBlog 38m38 minutes ago Earlier, 2016 SF Jayson Tatum finished with 25 points and 5 rebounds in front of the Duke, UK, UNC and SLU coaching staffs. #EYBL

Obviously SLU really only has the St. Louis Eagles with Tatum being their main target to watch so they make the trip down there mainly just for him. Plus who knows how well the other schools feel about their chances but they won't give up if they are in the final 4 and already down there to watch other kids. Any way we know which coach or coaches are down there?
