slufan13
Weird convo here, but I was just on the phone with someone from our New York office. He asked if I followed the Bills and I of course said yes. He apparently went to the same high school as Bishop. Said he's probably seen him play "2 dozen" times. I asked him if he would be any good and he emailed me a little later saying the following: - thinks he's a good fit for an A10 school. He can't speak to fitting at SLU specifically, but he said he watches enough A10 games on local channels to think he's about right for the conference. he said he's definitely an improved player from last year, but "if he's your day 1 starting guard, he either got significantly better or your team isn't very good" - said he'd be best suited to be a secondary ball handler. he can handle it, but he isn't a guy you want with the ball in his hands every time down. - streaky shooter who will sometimes give up on his jump shot and drive more. good driver, but as any talented high school player, he forces it sometimes. capable of putting together 4 or 5 straight 3's in a row. - said he can shoot off the dribble but definitely isn't as smooth. - intense defender, but probably relied on his athletic ability too much. will have a learning curve to playing college level defense. - needs strength Again just one man's opinion and he said he wanted to stress that he's no expert, but he really enjoys high school, college, and pro basketball and thought he could give a decent report. slu72
NY and the northeast have a lot of knowledgeable fans, and if they attend a lot of HS games they get to see a fair amount of good players. Sight unseen I'd take his judgment, which is we got ourselves a potential average A10 player. Not bad, but was hoping for something better. 3star_recruit
That's a lot of raw material to work with. Can heat up from distance, drive to the hoop, is a respectable shooter off the dribble AND a willing defender? I don't believe we have anybody on the roster with that skillset. thetorch
This is the type of recruit I expected, maybe a little better. A kid who can be coached up. Can this staff accomplish that?
Old guy
Anyone who can make the all New York City teams has to be a good player. There may be better players than him, but just by the fact that he made these teams we can certainly say there are a lot worse players than himself in NYC. And no, Bishop should not be our day 1 starter. And yes, Bishop probably does have things to learn and improve upon. I am excited about Bishop. slufan13
I kind of think he's like a lot of our guys. He has some tools to work with. It'll be up to both him and the coaches to be more than just "a guy" during his time. The thing that I like about him is that according to that report, he seems to be a little more well-rounded than most guys we see come in. Maybe he won't stand-out in one area, but maybe he won't have a glaring weakness as a junior either.

slufan13
ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis University head men’s basketball coach Jim Crews announced today that point guard Jermaine Bishop (Queens, N.Y./Holy Cross H.S.) has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University and play basketball for the Billikens. Bishop begins his four years of eligibility next season. He joins 6-11 center Matt Neufeld (Victoria, British Columbia) and 6-9 forward Elliott Welmer(Columbus, Ind.) as incoming freshmen. “We welcome Jermaine to Saint Louis University and the Billiken basketball family,” Crews said. “He is a high-character young man who comes from a great family and a terrific high school program featuring an outstanding coach in Terry Tarpey. Jermaine’s ball-handling and ability to score, as well as his basketball savvy and competitiveness, will be very positive additions to our program. He is going to be a great teammate.” The 6-foot-1 Bishop averaged 20.6 points and 5.3 assists per game while helping Holy Cross to an appearance in the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) AA intersectional semifinals, the squad’s deepest run since 2012. He was named to the MSG Varsity 2015 All-New York City first team, which includes public and Catholic school players. Bishop scored 15 points in the Mayor’s Cup, an all-star game that features players from New York City’s Public Schools Athletic League against the CHSAA. He will graduate from Holy Cross as the program’s third-leading varsity scorer with 1,375 career points. http://www.slubillikens.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=27200&ATCLID=210029787&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

bauman
I think I really like our guards for next year. I believe DR,MB and MR will come back much more confident and ready to make a statement after one year of learning. All three of them clearly have talent and what is good is that they are not mirror images of each other. Adding JB to the mix and letting him adjust slowly can only help. I expect a much better year, especially if our other returning players make at least minimal improvement.
