3Bill
My initial reaction to this hire was disappointment. However, the more I read about ford the more I think this could be a great hire. He is a very good recruiter with a better track record on that front than anyone we have had in a long time. He's going to bring in some talent. And he has some solid assistants. Hopefully they all come along. One of them, bill grier, was an assistant with Leon rice at gonzaga. For those who wanted rice, we now should have that gonzaga pedigree. And Grier has head coaching experience. I'd like him to add a local guy who knows the St. Louis scene. Ideally Erwin claggett. This past season was brutal for ford but he was dealing with several players having injuries. His resume before that was pretty impressive. He's been to the tourney almost as many times as our school has in its history. Everyone is wining that he only won one game but he still got there which is more than most of our past coaches did. Give him a chance
HoosierPal
Ford's biggest problem with the Oklahoma State fan base was that his name wasn't Sutton.
SLU_Billikens08
One of his assistants just took a job at NC State.

I'm not saying they will regret firing him but if Underwood doesn't have them in the tourney year after year they will probably be calling for him to be fired. GOSLU68
James Dickey former Houston HC and also former Sutton assistant was also an assistant who said he wanted to bring his family back to Stillwater. He may not want to make the move either?
DeSmetBilliken
Might not be a bad idea to put Corey Frazier on the staff. Former Billiken player and very involved with the St. Louis Eagles.
Bobby Metzinger
Might not be a bad idea to put Corey Frazier on the staff. Former Billiken player and very involved with the St. Louis Eagles. +100 Would be great to have those AAU connections on the bench/recruiting trail. Also, DeSmet, you might be able to answer this question better than most, but do the Eagles still practice on campus at Simon Rec? Does NCAA rules prohibit them from ever practicing at Chaifetz (even in the auxiliary gym) on occasion? It would be great for those kids to see our newer facilities instead of Simon Rec. JMM28
Someone who had great references from the highest ranks of college basketball should be able to put together an all star staff. There isn't really a good spot to look at his staffs over the years, so I don't even know who he is connected with.
majerus mojo
The biggest hang-up with Ford is that he is pretty clearly not a great in-game coach. We need someone touted for their ability to scout and gameplan. Hopefully someone he hasn't worked with before

I also think the head coach as a good recruiter is blown out of proportion

majerus mojo
Yes. The assistants split up games and bring their findings to the head coach Ah. It read like you saying the HC never does either of those things
TheA_Bomb
Yes. The assistants split up games and bring their findings to the head coach Majerus is notorious for non-stop watching film in his hotel rooms and scouting/game planning. Maybe that led to him not delegating very well and thus developing his assistants. I agree assistants will scout and game plan but the Head Coach puts his stamp on it by 1 providing guidance on what to look for in the scouting and how to gamplan 2 approving the course of action 3 implementation of the course of action. Current indications (mid-level B12 finishes w/ great recruits, bad road record and 1-6 NCAA record) point to Coach Ford being bad at this aspect of basketball. I really hope that at 46 years old he can improve. I think the higher level of recruit will have an impact on SLU's record. However, I fear that when we get to the tournament and face an equally talented but better coached team we will get the same result he's always achieved. I was really upset by this hire and I'm hoping I'm wrong. I expect in the next month we will be excited by some higher level recruits incoming. That will feed some positive energy and I hope it translates into non-conference success. I expect improvement in players to equal wins and probably NCAA appearances. We really won't know if he just can't get it done in the tournament until about 2 NCAA appearances in (or the 1st one if he puts together a run). Hope we get there soon and hope he can put together a run.
