Old guy
I watched a lot of West Coast college basketball prior to the end of the NCAA and NIT men's basketball tournaments. It is a world of its own, they play late at night (from the point of view of the Central time zone) and they play primarily among themselves. Santa Clara is (or was during the 23-24 season) not a bad team. It will be nice to play them, and check out how good are we likely to be this coming season. It’s the Wild West out there, not your parents NCAA. I’ll take a potential Quad 1 or a Quad 2 game any day, anywhere. "potential" is the key word. ESPN is bringing us in to play a televised neutral site event. Why play a possible quad 1 or 2 game when we should get a guaranteed Quad 1 game. No matter what they have coming in or returning, a couple bad losses in their bad conference and Santa Clara is not a good neutral game on our schedule. We have very few opportunities to get Quad 1 wins, why take a chance on one that could just as easily turn into a quad 3 or 4? But this loser mentality thinking is coming from a couple posters who still wish Ford was the coach.

Scheduling is always been a problem. We shouldn’t be turning down games just because they might not be quad one.

We shouldn’t be turning down games just because they might not be quad one. That is the more valid point. Just how many really good P5 teams are going to want to play us, home or away? The answer is none, they don’t need to schedule a team like us (they all saw what Shertz’s team did last year, after all). A neutral sight game like this, with the extra TV money thrown in, is one of our few chances at a really good non-conference opponent. Travis Ford, for all his faults as a coach, was able to get teams like Auburn to play us in a home and away series with his lifetime of connections in D1 coaching. Josh Schertz, with his time in Indiana State and D3, doesn’t have those same connections. What would be nice is if the St Louis Sports Commission would offer some cash to help get good opponents to come here (either Chaifetz or Enterprise Center) to play some games and draw in fans and attention. cgeldmacher, CenHudDude, Adman and 1 other like this
slu72
I think a preseason Gateway Classic tourney is a great idea. Run it like the Charleston tourney where the 3 known state BB schools, USC, Clemson, and CoC, rotate being the host school. We could do the same with Mizzery, Illini, and SLU alternating as hosts. Charleston Classic always gets at least 4 P5 big name schools.

I think most fans would take that deal but not be too excited about it. A neutral site game is a rare opportunity for us to get a P5 team to play us. ESPN wants us on TV to help launch the season. Tell them to give us a P5 opponent or at least a Mountain West opponent. A decent WCC team is someone we can schedule any time.
Lord Elrond
Let’s see who the opponent actually is before complaining about it. I don’t think it’s set in stone, or they would have announced it and started selling tickets, The Dec 21st game of Iowa vs Utah is not only announced, but ticket sales started April 10th. The Nov 20th game is the Iowa women vs Kansas, tickets also on sale. They would have announced it and started selling tickets if SLU vs Santa Clara was a done deal. Apparently they are trying for multiple games up there, the rumored Santa Clara game may end up being against someone else on a different day. Gotta give them credit for doing their best to bring good teams to Sioux Falls.

You are correct, it isn't official yet. The two teams are selected. SLU has nothing to do with setting up an opponent. I guess some posters don't understand that. I actually think SLU will have its work cut out for it to get a good quality schedule together. At least we have a blank slate to work with, but I think getting any game against a good P5 opponent will be hard to pull off. I’m thinking it will be MVC heavy, with maybe a dusting of Summit or ASUN or OVC. And don’t forget we owe a favor to SIUE for hosting the WNIT for us, not sure how they will want to collect on it, but it is there. Also, aren’t most of the Nov tournaments also booked? I’m not going to complain about heading to Sioux Falls against the best opponent they can get for us play. What I’m impressed with is how good a job they do getting teams to head to Sioux Falls. Down here we have Missouri vs Illinois in the Border War and the MVC championship. How about the St Louis Sport Commission set up a Nov tournament, or a least a few more games? Maybe A10 vs MWC challenge? Get a couple good MWC teams to face off against SLU and another good A10 opponent? Maybe a 8 team tournament with both Chaifetz and Enterprise Center hosting games? Playing a 100-200 ranked team on a neutral site won't move the needle on selection sunday. We have to schedule to get us an at large bid. A neutral site game against a middle of the road WCC doesn't do that. If Santa Clara is a top 2 team in the WCC then maybe it helps us. Otherwise I'd rather play 80-100 other teams as a true road game. Does the committee give us extra points for this? SLU is on the bubble, but they beat a low major team in South Dakota on ESPN so lets put them in. That conversation isn't happening

What we need is winning lots of games, and then the committee may dump us out of the NCAA tournament because they like some other school better. After all, that is exactly what they did to ISU last season.
