Outside the box candidate - Drew Hanlen

Recommended Posts

A few of us on the board have been throwing around various candidates to take over the program and one name that we all kind of dismissed when brought up initially, but kept coming back to with reasons why it could actually be a real solid choice is Drew Hanlen. It would certainly be an outside the box hire, but it could be a home run based on the impressive attributes of Drew. We thought we would throw his name out on the board to see what others think of him. I will quickly throw out the case as well as the obvious concerns:

The case:

-Local kid who starred at Webster Groves (won a state championship)

-Had success in college playing point guard at Belmont for Rick Byrd (making two NCAA tournaments)

-Is currently one of the hottest skill development trainers in the country

-Hard worker and impressive knowledge of the game based on him running a successful and growing company at a young age (he started the business in high school) and the success his players/clients have had and coaches and agents targeting him to work with their clients

-Works with some of the top players in the NBA (David Lee, Bradley Beal, Dwight Howard, Andrew Wiggins, Zach LaVine, Anthony Bennett, Jameer Nelson, Jordan Clarkson, Festus Ezeli, Joe Young, John Jenkins, Kelly Oubre) in addition to many of the top local players (Bradley Beal, David Lee, Jayson Tatum, Cameron Biedscheid, Scott Suggs, Anthony Booker, BJ Young)

-Connections locally as well nationally within the game based on the above

-The prior few points would allow him to recruit nationally and walk into a kids living room and tell him and his parents with concrete examples how he can get him to the NBA

-The kid is already successful and will continue to be successful, there is no reason to believe he could not be successful as a coach. The hire would have some similarities to guys like Andy Enfield, Brad Stevens, or what we are seeing in baseball with former players like Mike Matheny

The concerns

-Young, graduated from Belmont in 2012

-No actual coaching experience

-Due to the lack of coaching experience he would have to hire a seasoned staff to help him with the day to day operations of the program as well as in game decisions since that will all be new to him

-Does he have any interest in being a coach?

-How much money would take to get him to change careers so to speak?

I previously compared Jim Crews to Jeff Fisher. So.... Drew Hanlen = Mike Matheny?

Make him an assistant and I'd consider it a home run.

I love this idea.

He probably needs to start out as an Asst. He'll want some bucks too as his gig now is pretty lucrative.

If our money guys really want to restart this program and build something sustainable from the ground up Hanlen is a good choice.

Give Byrd a couple million to come here for 3-4 years. Give Hanlen an obscene amount of money to be his Asst/HC in waiting.

Halen would give this program instant cred with recruits across the country. I don't think there is anyway he takes a job at SLU as an assistant. It would be a step down in prestige and pay for him. Heck, he may not even be interested in the head job because he has a really good thing going right now.

Hiring a guy like Halen would involve a vision and willingness to take a risk not normally associated with SLU.

This. Obviously it's impossible to know what he's thinking, but based on his pedigree of working with top NBA players, you'd think he'd have better opportunities than SLU if he wanted to coach.

Right. It would be more SLU selling Hanlen than vice versa.

Hanlen is serving as a shooting coach/consultant with the Hawks. They give him the flexibility to continue to grow his Pure Sweat Operation. The chances of us luring Drew away from his own business and the NBA are about the same as us talking Bill Self into leaving Kansas for the SLU job...

Anything is possible with enough money. The SLU job would pay a lot more than he is making as consultant for the Hawks and what he makes running Pure Sweat. A million dollars per year plus a chance to turn your techniques and theories lose on a whole team might be enticing to Hanlen.

Hanlen?

You think he'd be a dream hire?

A 25 year old to be our head coach?

Played for a small school? 9 ppg?

No goddam coaching experience?

Pay him big bucks?

In his defense, sorta, Drew's always been known for his VERY HIGH basketball IQ more than his Skill. Like I said earlier, he will be a coach just not for a while.

While you do make some reasonable "hold up" points, I would not use the size of the school or the amount of playing production as a point of emphasis. After all, Rich Majerus wasn't a particularly good player but was a hall-of-fame coach.

I like the idea of Hanlen and Conklin as guys with ties to the area/program who could wind up on our staff. It might be too early for either, but that is the kind of chance that a program like ours might need to take in order to get someone who winds up as a top-tier coach - by taking a calculated risk before anyone else does.

Majerus was an assistant coach first, what, 10 years? We have guys on here who want to hire Hanlen as head coach, now.
