Chris May is paid to be the adult in the room for SLU when it comes to the basketball coach's contract. He is supposed to protect the program and the school from emotional boosters that think they have to way overpay because a coach's agent has convinced them that DePaul was on the verge of hiring their coach. May has seemed to have an emotional attachment to Travis since day 1. I think it's pretty telling how quiet he's been this season. Brighton
Leave it to SLU to invent a new way to F themselves. Can’t fault Ford and his agent on this one.

If you're going after an in-demand mid/low major head coach, they'll want to be hired by the guy they're working for. Rick Majerus didn't give a damn because he was running his own show anyways. Not sure there is a self assured guy like that out there this time. thelaundry, Slu let the dogs out? and brianstl like this

SLU_Nick
The next 4 seasons should be fun with Ford on the bench as a lame duck until 2028. We can field an all walk on squad on our way to D2.

Putting the university on the hook for a buyout that massive is negligence. An auto-renewing contract in a sport that has an average coach lifespan of 5 years is negligence. There was no one on earth hiring Travis Ford for more than 1.5 a year. May/Pestello/BOT negotiated against themselves with this. A 8 figure buyout is...criminal. For reference sake, if Michigan State fires Tom Izzo, they owe him $7,000,000. Tony Bennett at UVA would get $12,000,000. Here's the play: After investigation it is revealed that Coach Ford did violate SLU's Covid protocols when he hosted a off campus party with employees and students. For his failure to comply with University protocols, which he agreed to in writing, he is terminated with cause immediately. Director May is also terminated with cause for failure to enforce the University protocols and loss of institutional control in the Athletic Department. The University is committed to public health and equal application of rules for all students, faculty and employees.* *SLU Public Affairs feel free to cut and paste the above in your press release Slu let the dogs out? likes this

Not sure there is a self assured guy like that out there this time. The buyout amount may require this anyway, but if you get rid of May first, which may be the best option, you probably have to keep Ford for an extra year. It might take a few months to hire a new AD, which means that a current staff member will be the interim AD. You absolutely don’t want an interim AD negotiating a new basketball coach’s contract, especially an interim from SLU’s athletic department staff. Then the new AD can hire their own coach in a year. Let them tamper with recruits/transfers. Get a leg up on everyone. Or hire Schuertz or Porter. Either way there is no reason to wait. If it's really about the student athlete, don't waste the last 6 weeks of the season when you know the current guy can't win. Take Tatum off the list. It wasn't going to be him as the head coach anyway, but he is staying in Australia.

TRN
The SLU Admin should be looking into any and all avenues moving forward. Buyouts are negotiated down all the time. There is no reason to overpay with the annual rollover. Most sane universities have a lump sum buyout that lowers with each year. The President and AD both should be shown the door for financial stupidity.
