  1. Oh come on. You actually think we have a D1 staff that doesn't teach fundamentals or particularly shot mechanics? Why do the players always seem to get a pass? If they don't learn it's always they weren't coached not they didn't or couldn't learn. If I had Jordan Goodwin's natural athleticism and abilities, I can tell you with 100% certainty, I'd be able to shoot. I don't care if I had to download mechanics off the internet to learn, somehow, some way I'd learn. If he could hit high 30's from 3 he'd be an NBA prospect. I've given private shooting lessons to kids from Elementary school through college. First lesson, I ask them all this question. Do you believe I can make you a great shooter, all of them answer yes. It's the wrong answer. Only they can make themselves great. It's up to the player. It's the coach's job to teach and show and correct. It's the players responsibility to work on it. And by work I mean focus and self correct while putting in the reps and the work not just go through the motions. You think bad results mean the players aren't getting taught. I don't buy it. Players like Goodwin and French who's main attributes are strength and athleticism generally excel at effort parts of the game. They have been failed by coaches and a mentality that puts far too much emphasis on winning at a young age. It's not their college coaches as winning is too relevant at that stage. By no means am I saying Goodwin doesn't put in effort. Hell, just watch him play, effort and motor is what his game is about. Somewhere down his line (and I'd put French in the same category) someone should have held him accountable to put in the technical or fundamental work even it's going to cost your team some games. They don't take their 7th grade won/loss record with them. Hell they won't even remember it 3/4 years later. They will take the skills learned forward and it'll make a lot more difference in their career then that 42-17 win over xxxxx team in 8th grade

  2. This article made me laugh. It touches on the fact that the stadium construction cost have almost doubled on Kroenke, how relocation payments are now due and how the Charges are charging cheap fees for PSLs and luxury suites because the Chargers only get to keep 18.75% of that money with the rest going to Kroenke for construction. The Chargers can then charge a higher ticket price for their seats while keeping the overall cost down and the Chargers will keep 100% of the ticket money while only paying $1 rent to use the stadium. https://www.voiceofsandiego.org/topics/sports/nine-things-to-know-about-stan-kroenkes-chargers-predicament/

  3. I would take the Chargers. I don't think it is going to happen, but if it did the NFL would have to be giving Spanos some funding for a stadium or a stadium upgrade to agree to it.

  4. I agree, as a team we shot poorly. Bess however made the most remarkable shooting progress that I ever recall seeing in a player in his Jr and Sr years. Ford obviously went after some proven shooters for this season, and my hope is that wil] open up some easier shots for our other players. Shots start going down and confidence goes up.

  5. Roy, Majerus was a genius at coaching the physics of the game, and also having a technical understanding of the intricacies. He would know each of the players’ stride lengths when dribbling at varied speeds while in a half court offense, and he would lay tape on the floor to show the bigs how to position at each side of the top of the key. He would spend ten minutes telling Loe where to set depending on the forward in the paint, and how Loe needed to stand to pin his man inside the cut, putting his feet just so, putting his arms just so, and putting his hips and shoulders just so, all so he could catch a pass, square up and shooting minimal time and motion, all while at the same time pinning his man and blocking the cutter’s(Jett his senior year)man. Majerus would then switch over and teach the cutters, showing them how to take the steps so they would have an inch separation around the cut, all the way from hip to shoulder. He would walk them through, then he would run them through it, then they would dribble and run through it, then they would scrimmage through it. When they would hit game time, they had it down so cold that they could immediately recognize when it would work, and they would hit it hard. It helped that Conklin, Loe, Agbecko, and Ellis could all do the screen right, and Loe and Ellis had to have their man sit on them, before and after the cut. Majerus taught this at the PhD level, Ford to this point is at the bachelors level. Drew Hanlon is making lots of money teaching the pro guards to do some of Majerus’ tricks at a masters level. This stuff is not easy to learn well, and hard to smoothly incorporate unless you get it drilled into you at the level where you can learn it.

  6. Roy. Now you’re being unfair. you blame Ford for PG development? What coach would look good for point guard development if you removed, unexpectedly, his returning point guatrd in Bishop as well as his back up in Ty Graves. And instead of saying these guys are permanently gone, leading the Coach on through the next recruiting season and then letting him know, after recruits have already committed. Now, as to development, if you ask me did Isabell get better under Ford - I would say most definitely - especially after considering we were his third school in four years. Has Goodwin developed under Coach Ford? Most definitely especially considering he never played point guard before SLU. Despite S2, Coach Ford wins the A10 Tournament, takes us to the NCAA tournament, brings in a monster recruiting class and he now needs defending 2 months prior to our first game? Wow Who was the coach Ford supposed to develop and what did Coach Ford do wrong? He made due w Roby and Hines, he went w Goodwin and Isabell after losing Bishop and Graves, he now brings in Yuri and Weaver to help Goodwin... Just wait for Coach Ford to actually make a mistake and then watch as his critics continue their attacks..

  9. Haven't watched since they announced they were leaving. I let my mom and brother watch the Cowboys on Thanksgiving when they were visiting but said they'd have to go to sports bar for any other games. Yep, I'm one of those a$$holes

  11. Everyone on this board who wouldn't jump at the chance to get the mighty Chargers of Los Angeles here in the Lou is an absolute idiot. Are you guys kidding me? Forget that they are a doormat franchise with only 19 playoff appearances (AFL era included!) in 60 years of existence, forget that they have 0 championships to their name, forget that they can't sell out a 27,000 person MLS stadium, forget that their horrible owner would smack a baby for a buck. This is the N-F-L you guys. Shame on you all for speaking ill of The Almighty Shield. We should be honored they are even considering moving a team to St. Louis after the terrible way we treated our last owner. Do what we have to do, spend what we have to spend, let's get America's game back in Gateway City. (F*** the NFL and F*** the Chargers/Rams - Real talk though, I love those powder blue uniforms, best thing the Chargers have going for them)

  12. I agree, a modern dome (without an NFL tenant) that could be used to host sporting events and conventions year-round* would be huge. Which is precisely why I'd settle or take them to court and use the money to pay off existing debt and upgrade the convention center/dome. Has anyone seen Nashville's convention center? Whoa mama is it nice. *(I know you already know this, Brian) When the Rams played at the Dome, the CVC (or whoever was responsible) was unable to schedule conventions August-January, as these conventions are booked long before the NFL releases its schedule. That is almost half the year. They were giving up a lot of money. Just to put this in perspective, a 4 day robotics convention attracts 30,000 people to our city. That is 30,000 people in hotels (X 4 nights), eating in our restaurants, renting cars, taking public transportation, spending money. That's half the home games played at the Dome each year in just 1 week. The typical Rams fan on Sunday lived in the region (no hotel needed), tailgated (did not spend money on dining), and then drove home immediately following the game. 8-10 days a year.

Past/Future Bills Opponents with notable rankings: #1 UVA, #6 SMU, #17 Notre Dame, #91 Denver, #123 Dayton, #119 Duquesne, #171 Fordham. Highlights the importance of taking care of business in the A10 for the rest of the season.

  15. Also, I would buy ridiculous amounts of Midtown Merlot, Chaifetz Chardonnay, Billiken Bordeaux, & Rammer Rose. Got those in a bottle and I'll never buy another brand of wine, I don't care if it tastes like vinegar. YOU'RE SITTIN ON A GOLD MINE CEDAR LAKES! DO I HAVE TO DO THIS FOR YOU???

  16. Paying off the dome and using money from the settlement to upgrade the convention center would put more money into city coffers than any NFL team playing there 10 times a year would. Let's be honest, having an NFL team is just a box we can check off on our social status list. I'd rather invest in something that will generate a return for our region. These owners care about their bottom line. If moving a third time makes economic sense for the Spanos family I'm guessing he'll move a third time. Although I guess an empty riverfront stadium would look better than what we have there currently. I also think the NFL that we know today will not exist in 15-20 years.

  17. Bingo. Do people in St. Louis think things would be different this time if we had an NFL team? Another city's NFL team (again!)? What's the definition of 'insanity'? The NFL is one of the most corrupt leagues in all of sports. It's giving FIFA a run for its money. Settle (for nothing less than half a billion dollars) or take your chances in court. Odds are in our favor.

  18. Absolutely they are Ford's players. No intending any excuses for that. And for the first time, barring another program setback, we will be able to watch a Coach Ford team with all its available players and components. My only comment is that Coach Ford has been scrambling, playing "with 1 arm tied behind his back", "making due", using Plan B, etc. ever since S2 broke and the boys self-imposed suspension on themselves - and received even worse treatment than had they simply played and appealed. Shame on SLU and the Title IX Coordinator Anna Kratky. Kangaroo Court now abolished by Betsy DeVos. IMO, Kratky should be fired and replaced. I am not sure what system Coach Ford prefers. Frankly, I don't think it fair to hold him to whatever he did years ago at Eastern Kentucky and UMass as those were a long, long time ago, the game has changed since then, the players have changed, and likely Ford has changed since then. As to OSU, again, Coach Ford would be a fool to do the same thing here at SLU as he did at OSU. My take is that Ford is not a fool, that he learned from his mistakes and that we are about to embark on a new era of SLU basketball - though I do believe that Ford will be the first to say that he is shorthanded due to the losses of Gordon and Santos and his inability to land a Graduate Senior big man. Nonetheless, let the Coach Ford era begin!!

  20. And you don't think they're getting taught proper mechanics? In some cases practicing bad habits is worse than not practicing at all. I can't imagine there is a player at SLU who hasn't been taught proper shot mechanics just to speak of one item

  22. We have had a triple success with # recruiting players who are physical studs # these players love and are committed to working hard in the weight room # these players learned early how to defend multiple positions. These are why I see Ford pivoting over more to facilitate the 4-1. As long as you can beat up the opposition on the boards and on d, you are in most games. The roster holes are significant, the recruiting reaches for a backup 10 mpg center who was weight limited and an injured senior who didn’t play illustrate the struggles even a well above average recruiting staff Face. It will be interesting to see how Ford starts the season, and evolves the team. As Goodwin drove Althoff to the state finals, so did Hargrove and Collins for their respective teams. If they can replicate a similar smooth transfer to SLU, we can be a dark horse in conference.

  23. As you laid out, some years you're not going to have a true starting power forward on your roster, never mind a 6'10 center who can play 30 min a game. A center of that caliber is a luxury. That's just a fact of life in a mid-major conference. If you want such a player you're going to have roll the dice on a promising project and develop him. Most projects fail. Coach Ford understands this and is acting accordingly. You sign the best combination of length, rebounding and offense you can. If that guy is 6'6 195 lb you pack on 25 lb in his first two years with your weight program. If he's 6'10 290, you cut his weight down to 260. Before he reaches his junior year, make sure you have his replacement signed and repeat the cycle. This is how you get old and stay old. We were incredibily fortunate to get a physically mature power player like French straight out of high school. Those guys are almost as rare at the mid-major level as a skilled 6'10 center is. The two athletic bigs at Desmet are already grabbing the attention of high-majors despite being offensive projects. All it takes is a good weekend at an AAU tournament for either one of those guys to blow up beyond our reach. As a program you have to be prepared for that likely possibility. I love old school frontcourts with a traditional power forward and center. But you can absolutely be a perennial A10 contender with 6'6/6'7 forwards starting in the frontcourt, once they physically mature. VCU has been doing it for nearly a decade now. That is your cake. A skilled center is the icing.

  24. Articles like that actually make me chuckle a little because it completely ignores the actual reality of the situation across the vast majority of the largest cities and their suburbs in the US, that includes Atlanta and St. Louis. Cities are becoming more white, less racially/ethnically diverse and less economically diverse. You have an increasingly upper income white population moving into cities displacing middle class African Americans and middle class Hispanics. The situation is even more exacerbated in the core of cities. The share of the population of the city of Atlanta that is white has gone from 31.3% in 2000 to 40.1% in 2018 according to Census Bureau. During that time period the share of African Americans in the city has dropped from 57.4% to 52.3%. Whites are responsible for 78% of the city of Atlanta's population growth since 2000. While similar patterns of white gentrification of cities across the country occur, the suburbs of those cities are becoming more diverse both racially/ethnically and economically.
