sludevil
SLU (10 seed) lost to Kentucky (2 seed) 88-61 ("clobbered"). Based on the stat sheet, it looks like Kentucky was definitely making Hughes a defensive priority (.235 FG%); probably because of the attention UK was paying him, Hughes' stats were decent but not great. Full game stats: http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/boxscores/1998-03-15-kentucky.html Re: Tatum: if his priority is maximizing his shot at a title, he will not be at SLU. But hopefully our recruiting pitch is centering more around the unique benefits of playing for the hometown team, and less around trying to go head-to-head with the blue bloods. That's our recruiting pitch don't worry. Our best recruiting pitch might need to be geared towards his family though.
Quality Is Job 1
Is this a legitimate post? Is your memory short? http://www.billikens.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=24410&view=findpost&p=423734 http://www.billikens.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=24410&view=findpost&p=423721 Both in this same topic. Just because you lack faith doesn't mean I'm joking around. Brian. Even if you are correct that JT is ahead of where Larry was years ago, there is no one player (much less a Freshman) who can single handedly turn an average to good team into a National Championship contender. A much better team? yes. An NCAA Tourney team? yes. A National Champion? No. Larry Hughes was great for us, scored 40 ppg on several occasions and helped get us to the second round of the NCAA Tournament but we were no where close to being a National Championship contender? Flying under the radar, winning games without the pressure, having a player who is really good or gets really hot and carries the team is one thing. Being a known quantity and the the favorite, being game planned against..., sorry but no one player can do this -- not even Michael Jordan or Lebron James. Basketball is still a team game and 3 top of the line players are needed to win championships. 2 top of the line players gets you close. 1 doesn't get you all that far. Jayson won't be the only very good to great player on the Billikens in 2016-17. Agbeko and Crawford will be seniors and Yarbrough and Reynolds will be juniors. There won't be many teams in the country who will enjoy playing against that team!

Dude, you're projecting a championship-caliber team from players that have little or no experience on a college basketball court, and who were not otherwise top-rated recruits. I hope we're good, too, but let's see how the kids play and develop before we start scheduling the victory parade.
TheChosenOne
Is your memory short? When it comes to what you post on a message board, yes. I forgot that you made a similar prediction back in mid-July. You are serious though? "When Tatum is a freshman — and if no current roster player or commitment leaves — there will be only one other player to come in with him, but Agbeko, Lancona, and Crawford will be seniors; Miles Reynolds, Brett Jolly, Malik Yarbrough, Marcus Bartley, Davell Roby, and Austin Gillmann will be juniors (or some of them may be redshirt sophomores); and Eliot Welmer and that notorious stud (player-to-be-named-later) will be sophomores. Even without Tatum, that squad could be better than the 2012-13 and 2013-14 squads and be a serious Final Four contender; Tatum and whoever comes in with him would likely make SLU a serious National Championship favorite." If lacking faith means thinking that this prediction is ridiculous, then yes, I lack faith.

WVBilliken
Wow, our sophs have played and proven little. Our frosh have not stepped on the floor yet. I just hope they are good players and can make it to the NCAA's once or twice. Love your optimistic outlook though!
Duff Man
Note that I said COMPETE for a National Championship, not win. Compete for a National Championship = Make the Final 4 People have different allegiances to their home town, so their answers are going to differ, but I perceive the experience of taking a hometown team to their first ever Final 4 as being preferable to winning a national title with a traditional power that was the preseason favorite. As long as Jayson can see himself getting to the Final 4 with the current SLU sophomores and freshmen, SLU is the favorite. So much hinges on how these prospects develop this season. They don't need to make the dance, but they do need to improve as the season goes on and provide reason for optimism. re: Larry Hughes comparisons When Larry played, elite players were mostly sticking around college 2-4 years. Having a top 5 recruit in 2014 is a much bigger advantage in the current landscape than it was in 1997. Additionally, Larry did not have a supporting cast of seasoned upperclassmen in place upon his arrival. The verdict is still out on the would be Jr and Sr classes for 2016-17, but there is a chance that Jayson Tatum could have a loaded supporting cast waiting for him on day 1 if even half of these prospects pan out. NextYearBill
ive said this before... tatum being rated this high may help us. he has nothing to prove by going to Kentucky. everybody knows he can go to Kentucky. all the good kids go there. make headline news, be a Billiken
Dwayne's_World
It's nice having some overly optimistic people on the board to counter the overly pessimistic posters... Creates a nice balance IMO.

Taj79
Let me say I never thought we had a chance at Hughes ...... As for FBJT I think the odds are much better. Legacy. Godfather. Dad. Mom. Hometown hero. Seems a well-rounded kid based on what you all say. We shall see.

NH
Who are the biggest boosters on the board? Let's start getting our Kentucky-style briefcase together for Tatum and Cook. One of the Chaminade alums on here could drop it off after practice.

One of the Chaminade alums on here could drop it off after practice. I can and will do it. I heard from those somewhat connected to Tyler Cook's family, that initially he has a lot of interest in going away to school. Hopefully the coaching staff can sell him on staying home and representing the hometown school. Not to take this completely off topic, but I really do wonder what an elite recruit like Jayson Tatum is offered from these programs or if it is all on the up and up. If I'm the #1 recruit in my class, I'm not taking illegal benefits from ANYONE. You know you've got the skills. Show up, get free swag, meals and travel, crush a bunch of caramel-skinned poon for a year, then fuoking PEACE OUT and get bills in the NBA. It's that simple. The difference is, Tatum won't be a legend anywhere but SLU. SIMPLE choice if you ask me.

And I'll leave it at that (regarding anything controversial). However, in these cases, the problem is not necessarily the recruit being wooed by grift as much as it's people very close to the recruit. The recruit likely has his future set, but some family members want their present to change yesterday and they don't know what tomorrow may bring. kshoe
Would our chances at Tatum be better, worse, or the same if we still had Majerus? Hard to say but RM hated the idea of finishing 2nd on a prospect. I'm not saying that Crews likes the idea but he may be more willing to take that chance and in doing so put more effort into Tatum than RM would have.
