New Field Hockey Field

Recommended Posts

Has anyone heard any updates on this new facility? You’d think with how facility upgrades are so celebrated in college athletics and help with recruiting you’d hear more about this project. Very weird.

@Midtown Madness has been reporting this for a while on their podcast. They have not been able to get any explanation for why no one in the AD has said anything on it. The first Field Hockey home game is coming up on 8/25, I plan to be there to see the new facility.

Is the facility ready? SLUBillikens.com is saying Sportsport is still the home of SLU Field Hockey.

May was assured the site was a Native American burial ground and when that wasn't the case it took FOREVER to import some remains to assure it was cursed.  It'll be announced presently......

Field Hockey has to take what they can get whenever - not right but a fact of life for them

That's a sh*tty way to run an organization and not at all in line with Jesuit or NCAA values but OK.

These values have been in place since before I graduated. They wouldn’t give field hockey players sophomore housing in grand forest because “field hockey isn’t one of those sports”

I get your point but Grand Forest has to be 60-70:years old. I am surprised they haven’t been replaced. I guess in all real estate Location Location Location.

I don’t even understand your point?

I’m not making a point, I’m directly quoting a contemporary of mine who played field hockey.

I assume your point was that field hockey was treated as a second class program and didn’t deserve the luxury of living in grand forest . My point was is grand forest a luxury?

It’s where every other non-freshman Billiken baseball, softball, soccer, basketball player who didn’t live off campus lived. It’s not about luxury, it’s about a standard.

Field hockey is 348-565-35 over the 48 seasons it has been in existence at SLU.  It's a non-revenue generating sport likely only here to satisfy minimum requirements to be Division 1 and balance Title XI requirements.

Do any of those players get full-ride scholarships?

Field is being laid down today. If you come to watch a game bring your own chair. Not much room for spectators

I think you buried the lede of the field being blue….which i mean the Olympics field has been blue so that’s not too weird.

Way back, I mean waaaay back, when I was in med school, the SLU field hockey team eas above average. One of themed school faculty (van Hoogstraat??!? maybe) was the coach. Had played on Dutch national team in his younger days. He attracted quite a following.

As I said it was a loooong time ago, and my details may be off a bit.

Point is, like in MBB, WSocc, MSocc attract a good coach JS/Hendrikson, you can have a competitive squad .

So, are you okay with the athletic department diverting funds from the Men's Basketball program so that the field hockey team spending comes in line with Jesuit and NCAA values?

Field Hockey has been around since 1975, so I am ok with spending some money on it once every 50 years. If you go down there you will see a team putting on Billiken Blue and fighting for a Billiken victory, so I personally am ok with upgrading the facilities to high school standards.

Bleachers have been installed on the south side of the field.

That is a very specious argument.

No matter what we spend on Field Hockey that has nothing to do with Basketball spending.  That is not how the AD works.

It is in the best interest of the university that if it offers a scholarship eligible sport to give that team at the very least the bare minimum needed to compete for A10 titles.  We have more than enough resources to do that.  Choosing not to do that puts the university in a bad light.  You also have to call into question recklessly spending on a sport that is destined to fail.  Why even compete?  Just drop the sport.  Offering a sport that has no chance of winning just to check a box or fulfill title IX guideline is a huge waste of resources for the school.
