It all depends on how much they spend, many think there is no end to their money which is emphatically not the case, not as long as they depend upon a very large salary. You are young, of course, and know nothing about money, but the good times always end. Finally, you should give Ford at least a small level of respect and understanding. He is not having a good time currently. Yes there are pro sport athletes who do not manage their money well but I would not compare a basketball coach to them. The coach has had to work his way up so he has a bit more experience in life to not make those kinds of mistakes. Yes millionaires go broke - happens all the time with lottery winners but once again a person winning the lottery may not have had the opportunity to learn better habits. Ford was smart enough to downsize a couple of years ago as his family got smaller so he has shown a certain about of financial acumen or at least he is smart enough to have someone advising him and he listened. If he has been living paycheck to paycheck then he is not the kind of man I want as our head coach or leading young men - we need someone who is smarter than that. As far as respecting him in tough times - tough times are relative. Him losing his 2.5 million a year job is hardly a tough break especially since he has been earning well for many years. If he spent it all then this is his fault not ours. I once told someone that they are getting well paid but they will take every penny out of your hide - he later told me I was right. When he was let go, the word was that he would have all kinds of offers, not so. Same thing happened with Cuonzo. And yes, it does take a good presentation and a good deal of success and experience to have success as a coach. Yet the time comes when they find no takers. I think Ford may well be in a similar situation. A very successful man that reached a salary level few ever come close to. But the well appears to be drying. Some respect is due from my point of view, your choice. If his buyout is indeed $10mm that’s like being paid 4 years salary for gone fishing in FL. None of us know his financial situation but highly doubtful he’ll be going on welfare anytime soon. What hurts him the most will be sitting out seasons behind the broadcast table or as a studio analyst. Ford loves/lives to coach hoops. He’s a relatively young man. If being fired from SLU makes him damaged goods in the eyes of prospective schools it will hurt his pride way more than his bank account. A lot of folks in their early 50’s who lose a top position find it difficult to find another one of similar stature. Call it age discrimination, ageism, or prejudice but folks in that situation feel like the sky has fallen. Travis may land another coaching job but it likely won’t be with a P6 or high mid major immediately. He needs to craft a better resume, and it starts at a lower level. He was always considered a young up and comer. That image got dinged at OSU. Now at + 50, while not over the hill, he’ll be viewed as a late model used car. Functional but not luxurious. He’s now in the class of former up and coming hot coaches, eg Crean, Gregory, Romar, Martin et al. Can he reach his dream of being a P6 HC.
