HoosierPal
Texas A & M's Jimbo Fisher has been fired, with a reported buyout of $76 million. Read that again....$76 million. Add another few million or so to let go his staff at year's end, and then add several multiple million for a new coach and staff. Okay, round it all up to $100 million. It was reported that Texas A & M has one of the largest alumni groups in the country, but come on, upwards to $100 million for a football coaching change? I have a cousin who teaches at TX A&M. I'm sure he would be thrilled if his department received 0.1% of that amount for educational purposes.
TheA_Bomb
Yeah $76.5 mil buyout and $100mil for the whole staff estimated. As a Texas fan, I was hoping they'd keep ol' Jimbo. What a waste of money. Look for the AD to be fired too it was a horrible deal from the beginning as he was on the struggle bus at FSU when they hired him away. aTm is doing alright on academics as well. The aTm cult wants to win so bad and seeing Texas at 9-1, #7 hurts. The insanity exists because fans are willing to watch and pay. When that subsides so will the insanity. On a much different scale I sadly see some similarities. But we don't have that kinda $$.
Brighton
Yes we do. We just choose not to use it because Ford is beloved.

I'm guessing Brighteyes tops out at about $10 million in disposable cash. He is holding out for court side seats before he pulls the trigger on Ford and company. He also wants to pick the new Head Coach. And he likely wants a urinal in the men's room named after him. billikenbill likes this
Compton
I was surprised by all the hang wringing and despair (at least by the Mets) around Craig Counsell's new contract with the Cubs considering what many college coaches are pulling down. Lord Elrond
Why would anyone give a contract with a buyout like that in the first place. Find someone else in the first place almaman likes this
Box and Won
Also, there is no offset if he takes another job, so he can double dip.

Did they really think they needed to put all that in to get a coach? The real insanity was offering that much money to anyone in the first place. Lord Elrond
Actually, this whole thing points out why Aggie jokes were invented in the first place. I’ll throw one out the in honor of the stupidity involved in giving Jimbo that contract: There was a group of Aggie science students that wanted to take a trip to the sun, but some UT students said that was impossible and that they would burn up along the way before they reached the sun. The Aggies replied, "We're going to travel at night!" willie likes this

TheA_Bomb
Ya'll just don't know how weird they are in College Station. It is a cult. They extended him after the 9-1 Covid year with this guaranteed money because his agent scared them that LSU may poach him. They were the ones that broke Texas to the SEC at media days in the hopes they could fend it off. They didn't realize the deal was already done behind their back and that everyone else was in on it. Just pathetic. Also the Yell Leaders are bizarre. To bring it back to SLU. We got a buy out that relative to our booster money is bad. We're stuck in neutral with no change in sight. There should be a 30 for 30 on historically terrible contracts that were signed because LSU was looking for a head coach. Mel Tucker, Jimbo off the top of my head. Dan Lanning is about to get paid, Norvell too. If aggy were smart they'd hire UTSA coach Traylor or Duke's Elko.

He left behind a mess there.

Mizzou is a tough place to win. Yet, Mizzou has twice as many 12 wins seasons as A&M in their history. Nobody under 31 was alive the last time A&M won 12 games. In the last 25 years they have won zero conference titles and 1 division title. Mizzou won 5 division titles in that time.

Aggy gonna Aggy. They have the money. They have the facilities. They have the conference. They have the geographic location. It just shows the importance of the organization and the right coaching hire. Hawaii and Alaska became states 30 years after aTm's last (actual) National Championship. Fingers crossed they mess this next one up again.

HoosierPal
From the Post Dispatch; Kind of funny. ESPN reported that Texas A&M will owe Fisher $19.2 million within 60 days, then pay him $7.2 annually through 2031. There is no offset to those payments if Fisher finds another coaching job -- and he will. Fisher’s agent, the estimable Jimmy Sexton, might be willing to bargain one gigantic lump sum to settle this. That would give Fisher an opportunity to, say, buy the state of Vermont as investment property. All of this is sheer madness. Wouldn't it be far more cost effective for boosters to just find a better program to adopt?
Old guy
Hate to tell you HoosierPal but the State of Vermont cannot be bought with a mere $79 M, although you can possibly buy an Island (all of it) for that amount in the Bahamas or something like it. The second thing that comes to mind is that Texans are Texans and that they consider themselves different and quite likely much better than anyone else in the US. I seriously doubt any large donor at Texas A&M would switch support to any school outside of Texas. brianstl likes this
