If this is like last year, St Louis City SC is providing the venue, but it’s up to SLU and SIUE to market it to their respective fan bases. From what I heard and saw in the stands, SIUE clearly out-marketed us last year. It’s on SLU to this year to get the fan base out, and bring the Boot back where it belongs. If St Louis City 2 can pull in 10,671 for a MLS NextPro game, between SLU and SIUE we ought to bring in more than that. Lord Elrond
John Klein is getting the start tonight for St Louis City SC vs Vancouver out in Vancouver. It will be interesting to see what happens, St Louis going with a heavily rotated lineup, Klauss is injured, not even on the sub list, Parker is banged up but at least available to sub in, Burki getting a rest at goal, apparently didn’t even travel with the team, Lundt is in goal. Striker tonight is Nokkvi Thorrison. No idea what to expect, go for it John Klein.
Lord Elrond
John Klein played well, high on the right side. He played the entire game. Got a shot on goal trying to redirect a pass at the 30 minute mark, but the Vancouver keeper made a good stop. Klein was involved early in the sequence on the 2nd St Louis goal, with a great pass to Totland who fed Lowen (Lowen’s shot was deflected off a Vancouver defenders hand for a penalty shot, which Lowen made). Overall Klein forced 3 corner kicks, was very active, earned praise from the announcers as well. St Louis ended up losing 4-3, 2 of the Vancouver goals came off unlucky deflections off the patchwork St Louis defense. I’d say John Klein is making the most of his opportunity to play while waiting for the reinforcements from 2 Bundesliga to get into town. In the fan voting for City Man of the Match, Lowen was first, Blom 2nd, and John Klein 3rd, so I guess a lot of City fans saw something good in Klein’s performance. Speyburn
And the MLS / Next Pro loan agreement is that the players that are brought up on loan can only be on the bench for 4 MLS games or appear in 2 MLS games. That is the reason Klein was signed to the first team. Though all these injuries are not good for the team, it does give the younger players that are brought up an opportunity to impress. Speyburn
ST. LOUIS (July 1, 2024) – St. Louis CITY SC today announced the departure of the club’s head coach, Bradley Carnell. Technical Director John Hackworth will manage the team on an interim basis as CITY SC begins the search for a new head coach. CITY SC hired Carnell as its first manager in January 2022. During the club’s inaugural campaign with Carnell at the helm, the squad finished as the 2023 Western Conference Regular-Season champions with a mark of 17-12-3. St. Louis became the first expansion team to win a conference regular-season title and record 17 wins (post-shootout era). But wins have been difficult to come by in CITY SC’s sophomore season, with a current record of 3-7-10, averaging .95 points per game and with the team sitting 26th in the Supporter Shield standings. “Given Bradley’s many contributions to the club, this was not an easy decision,” said CITY SC Sporting Director Lutz Pfannenstiel. “Unfortunately, based on our Year 2 results to date, we believe a coaching change is in the best interest of the club as we regroup and look to improve both our performance and our results.” CITY SC President and GM Diego Gigliani also weighed on the club’s coaching change, “On behalf of everyone at CITY SC, we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Bradley for his time with the club. He was integral to the club’s success during our historic first campaign.” “Bradley, Claudia and their family embraced St Louis and we wish them nothing but the best moving forward,” continued Gigliani. Effective immediately, Hackworth will assume the title of interim head coach. A long-time member of the U.S. soccer ecosystem, Hackworth has close to 30 years of coaching experience at various levels, including two different assistant coaching assignments with the U.S. Men’s National Team and head coaching positions with the Philadelphia Union and the USL’s Louisville CITY FC, where he led the team to the 2018 USL championship. Lord Elrond
Sic transit Gloria mundi… Only 1 MLS coach has job security, Peter Vermes at SKC made the sporting director report to him, so only he can fire himself. I think Bradley Carnell actually had more time on the job than most coaches in the western conference when he was let go.

I look forward to seeing them score some goals this season.

Speyburn
ST. LOUIS (July 3, 2024) – St Louis CITY2 signs forward Lucas Demitra and midfielder Matteo Kidd to MLS NEXT Pro contracts. Kidd is signed through the end of the 2024 season while Demitra is signed through the end of the 2025 season. Demitra joins CITY2 from Slovakian club, AS Trencin and Kidd joins from Chicago Fire FC II. “We are adding two exciting players for the second half of the season,” said CITY2 Head Coach Bobby Murphy. “We expect them to contribute right away and can’t wait to get them in the building. Lucas and Matteo are both local products that are from the St. Louis area and we are always proud to give hometown kids an opportunity.” Demitra was born in St. Louis and is the son of St. Louis Blues hall of fame player, Pavol Demitra. He began his career in the youth system at AS Trencin in 2010 and progressed to their first team in 2020. Last year, Demitra was on loan at FC ViOn, where he made eight appearances. In his career, Demitra has played in 45 games, scoring four goals, and earning two assists. Demitra has made appearances for Slovakia’s Youth National Teams at various levels starting with the U-15s and most recently with the U-21s. Kidd grew up in St. Louis and attended Saint Louis University from 2017 to 2020 where he made 45 appearances and scored two goals for the Billikens. In 2021, Kidd began his professional career at Chicago House AC in the National Independent Soccer Association (NISA) making 18 appearances in the team’s inaugural season. Kidd then signed with Chicago Fire FC II for the 2022 MLS NEXT Pro season and amassed 34 games during his time with the club. Lord Elrond
John Klein earned lots of praise for his play last on the post game press conference. New coach John Hackworth moved Klein inside, and gave credit to Kevin Kalish for the idea, saying he remembered that Kalish used him that way back in 2021 at SLU (Hackworth said he liked to attend the SLU games if he could). Both Indy Vassilev and Edu Lowen also had praise for his play, becoming the connector in mid-field. Yes, this was against San Jose (just give them the wooden spoon already), but still Klein is taking real advantage of his opportunity. His window to impress closes July 18th, Cedric Teuchert was introduced to the crowd, and Goodwin-Reich is coming from Sydney any day, and of course the new DP Marcel Hartsell coming in from Germany will probably push him to the bench, but Klein playing well will mean he stays with the team and still gets minutes. Link to the postgame press conference: https://youtu.be/O3FJ1UT-OAo It will be interesting to see if Kipp Keller gets any minutes for FC Cincinnati vs Inter-Miami tonight Gremio14 and Zink like this

Messi won't be there. FC Cinci played DC last night ( a W) and Keller started and played 78 min. He has played in 11 of their matches, started in 8 and already has more minutes this season than in either of his two with Austin. Here is a nice quote from Lowen about Klein. With all the injuries, time will tell how often Klein plays after the 18th. Lowen and Indy stay on the pitch, but then it's mix and match. Girdwood-Reich is a defensive Midfielder, so he likely won't take minutes away from the current offensive group. But you don't know, after Coach Hack put Durkin at CB, anything can happen. Happy 4th!
