Wonder why CITY SC didn't put up a bid. Not saying SLU is not a good spot, but their training facility next to CityPark is top notch.

2026 World Cup is from Jun 11-Jul 19th, maybe this works with the SLU practice schedule better than an MLS team in season?

I don’t think it has been announced officially, but all indications earlier were that the MLS plans to pause operations for the World Cup in 2026.  Maybe that has changed.  I know Garber was whining about how hard it is going to be on them.

Probably more concerned that tickets sales at MLS games would be way down if they tried to play. Guess we’ll see what happens

I think SK put up their facilities, maybe City just didn’t think it was worth the hassle. Got a good thing going.

I’m actually surprised that the German National Team hasn’t already worked out an informal deal with Lutz to use City’s facilities if they need them.

Is it possible they did not have certain extraneous facilities? SLU as a home base perhaps offers some extra (somewhat secluded) space for non-soccer related leisure? SLU's outdoor pool and volleyball courts for instance.

Possible. Also, the Champion’s Center could be used to feed the team

The base camp bid was open not long after the April 2017 unveiling of the joint countries hosting the 2026 WC. At that point there was no St. Louis City SC.

John Klein III checks into the game at the 76 minute mark. Game has been a nightmare for St Louis City SC, only down 1-0 on the road but Celio Pompieo was taken out on a stretcher and Joachim Nilsson went out with a hamstring injury.

Well that would make sense then. Thanks for the information.

USMNT shared the training park with City during the season.  One practiced in the morning, the other in the afternoon.

Like Gehrig for Pipp or Brady for Bledsoe. It’s Klein Time!

Very true, John Klein now has a chance to shine, if he does well now he’s probably on City full time

ST. LOUIS (June 22, 2024) – St. Louis CITY SC signed Columbia, Missouri native and midfielder John Klein to a first-team contract through the end of 2024 with club options in 2025 and 2026. Klein made two first-team appearances this season as a CITY2 player.

“We are proud to promote John to the first team after all his hard work,” said Sporting Director Lutz Pfannenstiel. “Coach Murphy and CITY2 has had a strong season so far and their success breeds success from within to make the pathway from second team to first team stronger and seamless.”

Klein, 24, recorded his fourth career MLS appearance for St. Louis last Wednesday against the Colorado Rapids. He tallied two MLS appearances last season for CITY SC. He is having another strong season at CITY2 with four goals and two assists in 12 matches. In the last year-and-a-half with CITY2, Klein has tallied 17 goals and six assists in 41 matches played.

Klein was selected by St. Louis CITY SC with the 30th overall pick in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft following his standout career at Saint Louis University. In 88 total games for the Billikens, Klein recorded 29 goals and 27 assists. Following the 2022 season, he was named Atlantic 10 Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Year. His play helped SLU reach the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals in 2021 and the NCAA Tournament Second Round in 2022.

Klein showed some energy when he came on last night, closing down opposing players which has been lacking this season.

I agree.  City needs a closer - too many missed opportunities this year.
