There is not possibly enough space to list all the hurt nor the right words to elicit healing. But here are some thoughts I wish to share with you. The human spirit is resilient, and companionship is enduring. Especially in these moments, we are called to serve and support and to do so with empathy — to identify with the humanity of one another. As some feel hopeless, we exude compassion and suffer with them. From the political tensions and violence in Catalonia to the racial injustices in St. Louis, compassion is needed. From the earthquakes in Mexico to the hurricanes in Puerto Rico, Texas, Florida, and elsewhere, compassion is needed. From the terror attack in Edmonton to the massacre in Las Vegas, compassion is needed. All are invited to take two minutes of silence at noon on Wednesday, October 4. The clock tower will be the central location for those who wish to gather in person. Also at that time, the usual weekday Mass will be offered in the lower chapel of St. Francis Xavier College Church and on the south campus in St. Raphael Chapel (Caroline Building) at 12:05 p.m. Wherever you find yourself at that time, please take a moment to pause — to reflect on the suffering of our neighbors, the legacy of lives that have been lost, and on how we may replenish our wells of compassion so they do not run dry. A lot of people think that basketball is necessary for the University to attract well qualified students and increase its image and endowment. You can interpret the decision made public yesterday as a confirmation that from the point of view of the University, the athletics, particularly the basketball program, is NOT the most important part of the University. Other things are more important than basketball and athletics. And this is why the University's reputation will continue to plummet. Programs were cut and faculty laid off. The Medical School is on probation. The Law School is a mess. The impact of a national renowned athletic program cannot be understated. SLU will never reach its potential as a University until they realize that athletics matter. If high schoolers see a raucous Chaifetz Arena on national TV, they will be more inclined to apply to SLU. If more students apply to SLU, SLU can be more selective. If SLU is more selective, the academic profile of the school will increase. Everything is connected. We are not and never will be looked at in the same academic light as Wash U or Duke or Harvard. Let's stop pretending that SLU is the pinnacle of academia. Turns out he was expelled.I am not even sure which player that was..I suppose it doesn't matter since we will find out soon enough. Since there are no criminal charges that I am aware of this whole punishment must be based on SLU code of conduct. The administration seems to think it is protecting itself. Lets theorize that the same situation occurred but the accused were not basketball players or any other student-athlete. That they were ordinary students where mom and dad pay the tuition or have loans or even academic scholarships? Would have they received the same punishment. Based on what I know about SLU, I would guess yes they would. At least I hope so. I wish I knew about some similar title ix investigation. If I find out that something like this occurred and the accused were not suspended I would be hopping mad. Unfortunately I know of no such cases. You said there was no ill intent.. I think there must have been on one side or the other else why drag this out? A female complainant who is assumed to have dragged this out seems to have at lease some ill will. Other things are more important than basketball and athletics. Basketball is the way to keep alumni connected to SLU. People don’t go back and watch mock trials or debates. The program gives the school prestige and leads to more applications for the university. Which provides tuition, you know the thing that pays for the university to operate. The admin effectively killed that entirely yesterday. Wait and see how much donations drop in the next couple of years... This decision was a political statement by a politically motivated biased hearing officer who is still throwing a temper tantrum at the result of the 2016 election. The boys just happened to be collateral in what she perceives to be her duty to somehow "change the world." In addition to a lawsuit, I now hope the Feds absolutely destroy SLU. Unbelievable. If this is her idea of justice, then she has no business putting the letters "J.D." after her name. If Katherine Weathers wants to meltdown like the rest of the snowflakes then do so in ways that do not jeopardize the future of innocent young men. This is amazingly "deplorable."
