Cowboy
I think it is just under $400,000. -so if there is break then it seems like one issue becomes what do ESPN/CBS/whoever tv netowrk value in the remaining schools and the schools they bring on to fill the conference verus the value placed on the schools that have left the beast and I would bet the value of the tv deal is reduced, possibly a lot -but if we can get included I think the tv money is an increase for SLU
The Wiz
i would think it will be tough for those schools to justify walking away from that ncaa money. They might walk away from the money. They have control/majority till July 1. There are only 3 football schools at this point. After that all the new football schools coming flooding in and the BB schools may not have their way anymore. By walking away now (before July 1) they may be able to cut a better deal as an expanded all basketball league.....not to mention they can take the name "Big East" with them. The Wiz
Another perspective.... http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=who%20owns%20the%20big%20east%20name&source=web&cd=13&cad=rja&ved=0CDkQFjACOAo&url=http%3A%2F%2Fblog.syracuse.com%2Fsports%2F2012%2F12%2Fcollege_basketball_big_east_georgetown_st_johns_marquette.html&ei=EVXHULXBEaXgiwLzzYD4Dw&usg=AFQjCNHD2R1eU325LevkHPWkmqx_JG2t0g
ARon
Agreed. Unfortunately this was just tweeted by Andy Katz and others... "Temple AD Bill Bradshaw told me contract with Big East states that Temple became full voting member on July 1, 2012" Temple being a full voting member means that the 7 schools don't have the voting block to retain the assets of the conference. They can obviously still break off, but it would be at a much greater cost. That alone could keep the BE together. Unless UConn gets the invite they want or Cincinnati to the Big 12 happens soon. Box and Won
I don't think an all catholic conference is smart. There has to be a few non-catholic schools Why?
RiseAndGrind
In my opinion the key to the 7 splitting off will be whether they can retain the NCAA tourney credits from previous seasons. The tv money won't be materially different whether they are in the watered down football conference or the basketball only version. It sounds like the basketball only schools only have control of this situation until July 1 so this will go down quickly. Hopefully our esteemed president is on top of this and not overly focused on saving his own job... Biondi knows how to deal. And the new A10 commissioner seems to be very good. I like the way SLU is sitting.

MB73
Everyone is dreaming again. Every time the Big East farts. One guy already has four - 4 team divisions ("center"?). "Biondi knows how to deal", now that's an all time quote. "Base a conference on religion".... "anti-Catholic bias out there". This is gold, Jerry, gold. I say we scramble back to the MVC while we can...
Box and Won
Because I don't think it would be wise to base a conference on religion. There is a lot of anti-catholic bias out there. Just look at ND They seem to be doing pretty well for themselves.

RiseAndGrind
Here are a couple of tweets from Andy Katz: The 7 Big East Catholic schools are no longer naive. They know UC and UConn won't out. They want to be in a basketball conference. The tough decision for 7 schools is they would need to dissolve the league. Can't just leave without assets, pay exit fee. Television money is the key. Would they get a better deal on their own or with new BE schools? No set timetable. But 7 are now engaged. Last on this: Multiple bids would come from a 10-12 league that includes Gtown, MQ, 'Nova, StJ and possible top A-10 schools. And here is a column from Dana O'Neil http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/8735643/did-big-east-core-catholic-basketball-schools-wake-college-basketball
kshoe
The more I think about it, the more I believe it's finally a done deal that the basketball only schools are done with this marriage with the football schools. Cinci and uconn are leaving soon as soon as they can find a home and the remaining football schools don't want to be in the big east any more than the basketball only schools want them. There will be legal hurdles to overcome and a fight for the NCAA tourney credits and big east name use but that will all get settled. Eventually, the 7 will be looking for 3 or 5 more schools to join them. I tend to think SLU has a lot to offer but I'm biased. The game is on and it's up to Biondi and to a lesser extent May to deliver.

I doubt we would be getting metioned unless our name has come up in their discussions on these issues with insiders. Also, let's face it.............. ESPN will have a big say in the make up of a new conference. If the decision makers there think we make sense that helps.

Would Villanova be willing to accept a cross-town conference foe? Another interesting dynamic would be Xavier and Dayton. Would they think twice about adding Dayton considering Xavier would already cover the Cincy market. If they only add 3 teams I think we are SOL but if they add 5, I think we will be in good shape

Would Villanova be willing to accept a cross-town conference foe? Wasn't 'Nova really opposed to Temple joing the Big East in the past, and blocked their way for a number of years until the football schools got their way last year? If that is the case, my guess is that they would say no to St. Joe joining up with a new basketball-only conference.
White Pelican
The Catholic schools would be foolish not to discuss their options. But it doesn't make it a done deal. I think it may take one more nail in the coffin. Maybe Cincinnati to the BIG 12 will do it. Not sure how much I trust a writer that uses the word, "speeded". The word "speeded" is proper English. Alternative to "sped". The guy writes fine. Hell, he even used the word "predicated".

JMM28
Would the A10 be able to renegotiate for a higher $ amount from the TV deals with additional high profile teams? That would be the big hang up in that scenario. MU, DePaul, GTown aren't giving up 800k+ a year to play Fordham instead of Tulane. Also I don't see a benefit for the BE7 in trading a game with Tulane for Fordham.
