  1. That's just sloppy work right there. We use real leather briefcases, that have an aroma of Cuban cigars and Whiskey filled oak barrels with just a hint of licorice and black cherry.

  3. A program that lacks the most basic facilities is using "technology" to cheat. Kinda hard to believe.

  8. Bobby can be seen roaming the 14U fields in Illinois helping coach his grandson's team. I really hope he doesn't use some of his gems if they lose or play poorly. My favorites were "You guys stink worse than the whale sh*t on the bottom of the ocean", "You guys look like a bunch of sun bathing m*tha f-ing seals and then my #1 "I wouldn't take any of you into the foxhole with me".

  9. Why does it have to matter in Billiken circles? This isn't the Billiken Coaching Carousel Thread. (Feel free to start that thread) It's the Coaching Carousel Thread. There's a big world out there beyond what you may or may not find interesting. (and yet, here you are). This is also the 2nd time you have mentioned a Gonzaga assistant coach as well as previously mentioning an Arizona Head Coaching position. No one was bothered by it.

  11. 1) Good job w/your interview. 2) I do have a few specific additional program questions that could be asked next time. 3) SLU has to be competitive with compensation with Katie in order to try to keep her longer term. That's how it works. I am pretty familiar with some of the specific different Women's Soccer Coaching compensations. SLU isn't likely to be competitive with the top tier. But SLU can be and needs to be competitive with some of the other top 25 ish type programs. Structure is often base salary, plus team and individual bonus incentives, plus individual perks. These things don't often include outside perks, camps, other deals. If all else fails ask Jim Kavanaugh to write a check. The base pay is important, as are the numbers for the incentives. 4) I know the Leahy (Brian etc for their dad Dan) family upgraded the locker rooms at Hermann. I would like to see some upgrades and improvements to current facilities, as well as see some new things for the soccer programs. Several of the better programs out there have done this and are in the process of doing this. 5) It will be interesting to see who Mizzou hires. Shields won't be in play there. I would have to think they make a run at Todd Shulenberger at Washington St. (Has had success recruiting the West Coach) He was a former Mizzou assistant on some of their more successful league title and NCAA teams, he has had success at Wazzou, He spent 12 years in Atlanta, a big recruiting ground for some of the SEC. He was also successful at Texas Tech and recruiting there. Mizzou AD Jim Sterk spent 10 years at Wazzou. (No overlap) There are some other interesting names to watch too. 6) Shields has had experience where she has been an assistant, and, the Head Coach either abruptly left (UC Irvine) (Harvard) or was fired (Northwestern). So she has experience with a few coaching situations. Once SLU can win some NCAA games more consistently in addition to league domination, I think she will eventually have a decision to make if the league situation doesn't improve on and off of the field in some various areas. Darren Ambrose spent 15 years at Penn before Vandy. Mike Moynihan did the same at Milwaukee before Northwestern. They both wanted a new challenge to win and recruit at a higher level. They said there was a limit where they were. Shields is deliberate and thoughtful. And it's possible to have success at SLU, maintain it, and increase to higher levels, it if she can get the support she needs from SLU and the league. Some of that is up to SLU. There are perhaps a half a dozen programs that would be of possible interest to her in the future. If she ever left for a middle of the pack random Power 5 School that wasn't a specific fit, you would have your answer about SLU's (lack of) effort to keep her, along with league issues. There have been some other long term successful coaches that have stayed where they are because they were happy. (Memphis, Santa Clara etc..) Katie's background is all over the country, Southern California, Northeast, Midwest etc...which I believe is an asset not only for herself, but also for SLU. 7) Shields' success thus far cannot be overstated. It's a big deal to come into Metro St. Louis from somewhere else and successfully navigate the local soccer scene from elsewhere. Not an easy task. She has done an excellent job building a program, culture, player development, recruiting, she's organized, understands x's and o's, she can game prep and make in game adjustments, all with an approachable, positive, cerebral even keel. Keeping an entire roster engaged and interested. Next steps. Expanding recruiting. (I liked the Bry McCarthy hire) Shields and Chris Allen have done a great job with St. Louis, all over the Metro Area and Metro East, Columbia, Springfield, Kansas City, making inroads. (She is not going to get every top local player for reasons people already know, want to go away to school, bigger schools and leagues, different geography, $ etc.. but she is getting many) Getting high level, athletic on ball skill players with speed and physicality, and developing them. That takes effort and time. Expanding recruiting regionally, Nationally and Internationally options will only compliment the inside out approach. She has also done well landing Power 5 transfers seeking a different fit. Expanding diversity of players on addition to geography. SLU's lack of team racial diversity stands out because many of the country's better teams are much more diverse with Black, Hispanic, Asian players etc... I expect to see some of these things to be some of the next additional steps taken with the program. Katie is very aware of the landscape. 9) It's an exciting positive time for SLU Women's soccer. They get a chance to play (possibly) a similar level team (in a Power 5 league) in a Round of 32 NCAA game, for a chance to (possibly) play one of the country's best few teams and winningest program all time in the Round of 16. That's pretty good.

  12. I agree somewhat. Collins size, lack of outside shooting ability, and lack of explosive scoring ability / finishing severely limit his ceiling. That he's a very good player in spite of those things is a testament to his incredible passing ability. On the other hand, Collins numbers took a big hit after the injury. His splits were 43/26/75 up to & including Rhody game and 33/23/57 after the Rhody game. Further he was averaging 6.5 assists, 1.8 turnovers, and 1.5 steals up to & including Rhody vs 5.6 assists, 2.9 turnovers, and 0.7 steals afterwards. There is some level of competition adjustment because opponents before the Rhody game were weaker on average, but I don't think it is a stretch to say the injury compromised Yuri's play. 2020-21 Yuri pre-injury is absolutely a starter even if Nesbit can run the point. 2020-21 Yuri post-injury is absolutely not. Hopefully he's 100% healthy for the upcoming season and has improved his jumper as well.

  13. I think the biggest question for this team is at point guard. Ford essentially handed Collins the keys and gave him more leeway (while screaming constantly at him) than any other frosh of that class. Bell, Hargrove, and Jimerson all got buried on the bench at certain points. Never Collins. He was great as a frosh, and this year improved in the turnover category (A/T ratio improved from 1.7 to 2.8). Otherwise he was the same guy. His splits, from 2020 to 2021 were not much improved (37/36/56) vs. (40/24/67). He played basically the same (31mpg) this year to last if you take out the URI injury-game. He can be tenacious on D, but also can struggle against bigger guys. If Nesbitt can handle the point, I think the best lineup is probably Nesbitt, Thatch, Perkins, Okoro, and Linßen. If they need to go smaller, Hargrove, Williams, or Strickland for the German. My hunch is that Ford will keep his loyalty to Collins. Which is fine, if Collins improves. I love watching Collins play. He's a blur and an amazing passer and tough as nails. He's the captain of a top 50 offense. Ford needs to recognize that there are other guys who deserve court time if Collins continues as a low-volume, inefficient scorer.

  14. The simple answer is yes. Here is the long answer..... In the chart below, we will look at how 2 and 3Pt shots have been affected by moving the arc back. I particularly want to focus on 3 P shot value. 3P shots are more valuable shots than 2P shots. Exactly 50% more. The questions are... when is it worth taking the 3P shot ....who is taking it ...how has the extra distance affected the 3....and most importantly for this thread, who should we be looking for as a transfer. Let's look at the numbers....These will be team stats from all D1 schools....note that these numbers are pretty close to individual player numbers. First let's look at the elite teams....A+....3 seasons will be shown for all charts....The 2018-2019 season is the last season with the shorter 3P line. A+ teams .................2P%...........3P%......3P value ( 3P% x 1.5).......Difference (3P value-2P%) 2019.........55.7%..........39.1%............58.65............................+2.95% 2020........54.7%...........37.5..............56.25..............................+1.55 2021.........55.2..............37.7...............56.55..............................+1.35% C teams (average) 2019..........50.3.............34.2...............51.30..............................+1.0% 2020..........49.4..............33.3..............49.95...........................+0.55 2021..........49.7................33.5..............50.25...........................+0.55 The Bills 2019............46.6.............30.4................45.6.............................-1.0% 2020............49.7..............34.2................51.3.............................+1.6% 2021............51.3...............34.8................52.2............................+0.9 A few take aways....Again the answer to your question is ...yes , moving back the line did affect shooting. These charts show how much. Overall it cut the value of 3P shots by about half....exactly what the NCAA was trying to do. And the affect was pretty much across the board. You will note that the elite shooters value % were about 3x the values of average shooters...before and after the change. EXCEPT in the bizzarro world of the Billikens....When the NCAA moved the line back our numbers got better. Because our shooting was so bad in 2019 even though the line was closer for 3s, we should have only been shooting 2s because of the negative value. Another strange twist is our 3P% went up this year but our 3P value dropped because of better 2P shooting. That all means that last year it was more valuable to take a 3 than this year despite higher 3P stats this year. Finally, with these numbers in hand ....who should we be looking for in the transfer portal. The easy answer is take a 37.7%+ 3P shooter. The correct answer though would be to take at least a 35.2% guy who has made a minimum 25 shots this past season. That would give us true A+ value based on The Bills numbers. Bottom line.... It is still a good idea to shoot 3s as long as you are not terrible at it. For The Bills, the minimum shooter would have to be 34.3% and ideally at least 35.2%.

  15. Ummm 2019-20 Dayton went 18-0 in conference was ranked #4 in KenPom compared to Richmond 14-4 and #46 Kenpom. I doubt the gap between 2021-22 Bonaventure and whomever finishes #2 is that large.

  17. My initial reaction was WTF cares (Who instead of What). Now, that might be trolling but please accept my plea for ignorance. I am all ears (and eyes): explain to me why Saint Louis U. fans care about Coleman, Justus, Bruno, and anyone else you spit out there and what does their movement matter in Billiken circles. Please feel free to answer and then reply to yourself five or six more times. Remember: Lloyd has it in writing that he’ll take over for Few so you can leave that explanation out.

  18. I will continue to disagree. Unless the movement affects SLU directly, I don't really see the meaning of the fact that School X has done this to its coaching bench or who is getting paid what. My concern would be how that affects SLU. It doesn't. That is for the assistants. I always thought the 'Coaching Carousel' was centered on head coaches getting fired, hired and moving on and how that might affect Travis Ford, Corey Tate, Ford Stuen, Will Bailey, Alex Jensen, and so on. In addition, what new coaches would be entering the A10 at Fordham, Mason and so on. National news counts too, like the Pitinos, which started this thread to begin with. My dual post on Lloyd was simple ---- the information provided by courtside was wrong. That's all.
