SluSignGuy Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 As some of you may know, in the last few months I have been deciding what PhD program to go to. For some background, I went to GW undergrad. They had a five-year BA/MA program in Political Science, so in May I will hopefully completing my MA. Last fall, I applied to a number of PhD programs in Political Science. I was fairly fortunate in my acceptances and options. But this morning, I finally accepted an offer from Princeton University. The process was weird, and not totally unrelated to basketball. There is actually a recruitment process to this (without the NCAA rules). I visited four schools, all of which paid for my travel. Met with professors (coaches), students (teammates), and they talked about items such as placement and their approach to Political science (NBA prospects and coaching philosophy). Princeton was not the most "prestigious" school I got accepted to. It also wasn't the school that offered me the most money. There was even a school where I had better faculty matches for my interests, but it was weaker in other areas. However it was the school where I was the most comfortable overall and with the least amount of negatives (and I am good at finding negatives). So the SignGuy is off to Jersey for the next four to five years. Sort of sad to be away from St. Louis for longer, but I will still try to catch some games with the old guy out here on the east coast. Quote
jimbofive Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 Steve - I mentioned this in a previous post. Some guys seem to just make all the right decisions, and it's not fair to the rest of us. It makes us look bad. You are one of the bad guys. Congratulations, that's awesome. Gee, I can't wait till I go to hike school. Stay here. Stay as long as you can. Quote

Box and Won Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 OUT-FREAKING-STANDING! Way to go! Bill Maher had a professor from Princeton on his show a few weeks ago who had a very nice rack. I suggest you make her your advisor. Quote

slu72 Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 Congrats that's awesome.. Congrats, Stever!!!! Hold that tiger. You're on your way to the White House. Quote
Box and Won Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 Box, i couldn't stand that lady, but your point is well-taken. Me neither. The exchanges between her and Barney Frank were odd, to say the least. Still, I have to appreciate an Ivy League professor who is willing to show off cleavage like she did. Quote

MusicCityBilliken Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 This is great Steve, congratulations! Steve, are you going to be in the Woodrow Wilson School of Government at Princeton? Quote
Quality Is Job 1 Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 Congratulations. We'll be calling you Dr. SignGuy. Quote
Dungeon Yankee Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 Where is Princeton?................................................................................ .......................................just kidding. If you like football, check out my undergrad alma mater. It's quite a football experience. The stadium seats about 110,000. They have a legendary coach who is 81 years old and should retire but won't. The campus is about 3 hours west of Princeton on I-81. Quote
TheA_Bomb Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 Sign Dude you totally ruined my announcement of my acceptance to DeVry Institute. It is kind of the Princeton of the correspondence vocational schools. If you ever get a guy in your class that shows up late when he shows up, always turns in projects but maybe a week late and wears the same fraternity tee-shirt to every class while he sleeps in the back, he's kinda smart but doesn't really try too hard, just give that dude a C he won't hurt anybody he just wants to be a government worker. Congratulations. Quote
Cowboy Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 Agree on all accounts. -if you and box are discussing something as meaningful as this i had to search for a video.....i would think she would qualify to be a "full" professor -Melissa Harris-Lacewell is the name -just so you know, i did not have any volume on so i have no idea what was said Quote
courtside Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 Well, if it's (Princeton) good enough for wealthy teenage pimps from Chicago's North Shore...(Risky Business) ....... Considering Princeton's 54% male undergraduate rate, in these female attendance leading times, perhaps Steve just isn't as sharp as first glance... when breaking from those rigorous graduate studies and tripping the night fantastic at The Ivy? Will the Oval Office get its 3rd degreed Princeton Man? Quote
Bill_Ken R Posted April 15, 2008 Posted April 15, 2008 Congratulations Steve. No doubt a lot of hard work to be in a position to select from among the very top schools. I appreciate what you do for this board, which is very important to many of us. Also that you have remained a loyal Billiken fan despite other loyalties. You are a good man and you make us proud. kwyjibo Posted April 15, 2008 Posted April 15, 2008 Congratulations. Be sure to relax a lot before you get started. Quote

I can't wait for the posts telling you that you should have gone to a lesser school where you could have been the star student. Quote
Taj79 Posted April 15, 2008 Posted April 15, 2008 Do not piss off old guys that work for the Army and have access to various arsenals ..... like odorless, tasteless gas that makes your face melt off (The Rock)!!!! You fly to San Diego and then accept New Joisey? iI may have been for all the right and perfect reasons but it was SAN-DE-FREAKIN'-DIEGO!!! Oh, the parties we could have had in La Jolla. You'dve thunk our drives through souther New Joisey would have been enough! But congratulations. Looks like you are moving closer to the old guy's East Coast travel routine with the Bills and the A10. I'll assume Princeton means moving "up town" ---- as in professionally printed signs and lamination? P.S. I just want to point out that anyone going west on Interstate 81 is someone really smoking some fine weed! Quote
