Women's Basketball 2022-2023

It’s great to see a basketball team coming together, individual players meshing together and becoming better as a team, playing with heart and soul and putting it all out there with a common goal of winning as a team. Yes, I’m talking about a SLU basketball team, the women’s team. Entertaining game, they started out fast, kept the pressure up, withstood a GW run, then put it away late. 76-64 win over G-Dubya, SLU won with defense, GW had been shooting on the season .384/.332/.692, SLU held them to .301/.200/.857. Meanwhile SLU has been pushing the ball inside on offense and as a consequence is becoming much more efficient on offense, going .519/.438/.929 this game. More efficient offense combined with tougher defense leads to a much improved team. They are now tied for 5th at 7-5, half a game behind GW in 4th and a game behind Fordham in 3rd. Brooke Flowers had 21 pts 9 rebounds 4 blocks, Kyla McMakin 15 pts, Julia Martinez 8 pts 7 rebounds 8 assists, Peyton Kennedy off the bench had 13 pts, including 3 3pters. (Peyton Kennedy is making a strong case for consideration as the best player off the bench in the A10 in my opinion).

Having fun with numbers, Brooke Flowers went into the game with 367 career blocks, and was credited with 4 in tonight’s box score, which puts her at 371, which is sole possession of 26th place all time in Division 1. There is a 3 way tie for 23rd place, 3 women at 372, so 1 more block from Brooke ties her with them, 2 more puts her in 23rd place all by herself. Where could she end up? With 4 games remaining and Brooke averaging a shade over 4 blocks a game, that puts her at 387 total, good for 20th place all time. She would have to get to 396 to tie Rebecca Lobo in 19th place, which seems a stretch.

Hey, if people can have fun watching Yuri’s assists, why not have fun watching Brooke’s blocks?

The fact that we're watching possibly the best pure defensive player SLU has produced along with the best floor general we've seen in the same season is crazy.

SLU loses 84-74, bad shooting in the 3rd quarter takes them down. Kyla McMakin gets 24 points, Brooke Flowers a double-double with 17 pts 11 rebounds, but only 2 blocks, Julia Martinez gets 5 pts, 10 rebounds, 9 assists. Oh well, they did fight the whole game, playing good defense, but tough to win on the road. They are now 7-6 with 3 games left, they should be favored against LaSalle at home on Sunday and should beat Loyola, but even though they are at home against UMass, UMass is a really good team, 21-4 and 11-1 in the conference.

On the Brooke Flowers Block Watch (BFBW), she got 2 tonight, which gives her 373 total, in 23rd place all time.

Very nice win over LaSalle, the Explorers were up by 9 at one point in the 2nd period, but SLU closed it to 2 by halftime with defense and taking to the basket, like they’ve been doing recently. LaSalle pushed the lead back to 6 several times in the 3rd, but SLU kept fighting, and it was a 6 pt SLU lead at the end of the 3rd. LaSalle kept trying, but the Billikens kept it up and pulled away for a 74-63 win. Peyton Kennedy had a great game, 26 pts and 9 rebounds off the bench, Brooke Flowers got another double-double, 16 pts 14 rebounds, 2 more blocks. Kyla McMakin got 12 pts, and Julia Martinez 11 pts and 4 steals. Billikens now tied for 4th in the A10 (but I don’t think they own the tiebreaker), last home game Weds night against UMass, who’s 13-1 in the A10, then Loy-Chi on the road.

We should be able to take the game against Loy-Chi, UMass, even at home is going to be very tough.

And, for the Brooke Flowers Block Watch (BFBW), she had 2 today, which brings her to 380 for here career, tied for 21st place all time with Ae’Rianna Harris. 4 more (384) ties her with Jessica Davenport in 20th place, 5 more puts her alone in 20th. Rebecca Lobo is 19th at 396, which seems a bit out of reach, but who knows.

WBB should beat Loy-Chi, but they did lose to them 47-60 at Chaifetz in their 1st A-10 game back on 12/28/22.

Obviously the team is playing much better now & will hopefully be looking to get revenge for a bad loss earlier in the year.

I don't think Lobo is totally out of reach, but odds are probably less than even that she'll get there.  Brook is averaging close to 4 blocks per game this year (3.96).  I'm expecting SLU to play at least 4 more games.   They have the final 2 regular season games (UMass & at Loy-Chi), then I expect they'll miss the double bye, but win their 1st round A10 game.  If Brooke hits her average and SLU plays 4 more games, she'd tie Lobo at 396 in 4 more games.

I don't want to pour water on the fire, but man I feel like SLU somehow failed Brooke Flowers. Yes she will likely never see an NCAA Tournament, but I'm talking about strength and conditioning. Really wish she could have put on some size(Yes I know this is a sensitive topic). It really feels like if she's 10-20lbs away from WNBA radar.

She definitely the best defensive player the program has ever seen. I think she still has an outside chance at the WNBA if she wants it, but she'll have an exercise science degree and that will honestly mean more money for her.

She might want to go overseas and play, I’m sure she could find a team interested in her if that’s what she wants to do.

Brooke just has a really slight build, small shoulders, no hips.  There isn't much there to build on.  She also loses quickness and jumping ability, especially on the second jump which is much more important in the womens game.  She's had a lot of ups and downs with Stone, even last season.  I'm proud of her for sticking around.  She's had people trying to make her into something she isn't for a while.  Great straight up defender, shot blocker and decent rebounder.  Skills wise she just didn't have enough to make any sort of leap.  The womens version of French maybe.  Tillett has done a much better job with her.  While I'm not sold on Tillett, she was a much better coach for Flowers than Stone was.

If she wants it she could play overseas.  That is where the money is.  WNBA gets you notoriety but most players don't make enough for it to be sustainable.

Brooklyn Gray announced her commitment to SLU.

5'11 guard/forward out Wasbash Valley Juco, and Auburn High School in Rockford, Illinois. She played AAU with Example Sports and Rockford Heat.

2 time conference player of the year in high school, all state player. Versatile, physical big guard/small forward.

She's averaging 13 and 5 at Wabash.

Solid pick-up. Good to see we're getting some decent people.

Edit: DO NOT look up Brooklyn Gray without the word basketball. Apparently there's a porn star with the same name.
