Most people don’t want to go on the record because they actually still have hope for doing things because they really do care about the city.  Plus the biggest projects are not where the biggest issues are.  It is the smaller stuff that gets delayed or never gets off the ground because of the games played.  The stuff you actually need to happen to have a real turn around.  The decades of silver bullet projects that were going to save the city aren’t the fix.

if you need one example of a big time project developer that has had enough call up Bob Clark.

Fieldhouse

Midtown’s dining scene took a hit as well. Fieldhouse, the 10-year-old bar and grill near Saint Louis University, served its last guests on Sunday. The restaurant announced the news on its Facebook page, citing the difficulties facing the industry caused by the pandemic as the reason for the decision.

“Unfortunately, the challenges we’ve faced in the post-COVID era have significantly impacted our sales, making it impossible to sustain our business,” the post reads. “Thank you all for your patronage and contributions over the years—it has truly meant the world to us.”

Too bad. Pretty decent bar food. Not a lot of choices for pre/ post games.

The thing is, it's pretty much equidistant from Chaifetz to Humphrey's just in a terrible ass spot. You can't really see the arena from the door. Seemed like it was barely holding on even when it was the only bar food game within walking distance of Chaifetz.

Side note and just a matter of fact: Chaifetz is in a real crummy spot for pregame activities. Whole campus between it and anything west of Vandy. Prospect Yards is even further than Humphreys and includes some not so easy street crossing. Pappy's is the closest thing east of Compton and there are a couple little places tucked in on the other side of Olive St.

Vito's is great of course, they have a direct view of campus and a ton of traffic down Olive.

While I am sad to lose Field House as an option, I think it coasted a little on being the only sports bar option around.  Humphries' food is easily better, and the service at Field House was :meh:  They were packed on game nights because they were the best real option for a sports bar/burger type place.  However, I think Humphries has easily displaced them.

A problem, though, is I think Humphries is a 'bit too popular on game days.  On Saturday, I got there at 5:20, and there was only a 2 seater table left.  I had a group of four, so we ended up walking over to Midtown Sushi.  However, I think Humphries wished they had larger lunch crowds.  They should really consider doing a semi-scaled back lunch menu or lunch specials to attract more SLU faculty/staff to get closer to the price range of a Pickleman's.

The last two times I went to Field House, they were incredibly slow with bringing out food and drinks. Made us late the first time, and the next time they warned us it would be a while so we left. If they never got that pretty basic element of the business fixed, I wasn't going to return.

I never had a problem with the service at Fieldhouse, and I thought the food was above average for bar food.  That being said, their location was terrible.  Once Humphreys returned, it probably cut the last thread that Fieldhouse was hanging on by.  My hope is that someone opens up a place right on Olive near the parking garage.  I believe that particular location would thrive much more than Fieldhouse did in its location.

Wellspent is my favorite brewery in Midtown (and we have plenty within a short walk from campus). So underrated. Still love the original Urban Chestnut, too.

Also be sure to check out Blue Jay - great space, surprisingly roomy, and super approachable beers if you're with non-adventurous drinkers.

Wellspent is for sale. Best beer in Midtown, IMO. I hope they find a buyer and keep the quality as high as it is.

Sometimes, life happenings dictate change and we have to make one, and this is one of THOSE posts.

I have guided this brewery since it's closure in late 2019 and reopening in February of 2020, just in time to close back down again and figure out an entirely new business model. As always, the customers pulled through and in a HUGE way. I've seen that time and again with Wellspent, and it's so heartening to see!

As fun and fulfilling as this project is and continues to be for me, I have to pass it off to someone else. My commitments to my family, community, and other projects simply must take priority now.

As such, if YOU ever thought of owning a brewery, here's your chance!

If anyone has interest in this project, please reach out to me or the team there at Transworld.

I love you all, always, and forever.

Remember YOU are the ones who make Wellspent, the David standing next to the Goliaths, happen!

Wellspent is great, right next door to where I get my hair cut. Their "on the bright side" sour series is so good. The resilience is kind of incredible considering other breweries like Center Ice closed.

I love their OTBS series. I also really appreciate them taking a lot of traditional styles and just nailing them.

Center Ice was a fun spot but they just didn't make good beer. I thought they'd survive in their market niche for Blues fans.

The original Urban Chestnut is still there, as are Rockwell, Blue Jay (3 very good lager breweries within one neighborhood is crazy), The Schlafly Tap Room, and Brick River Cider. UCBC's larger spot in the Grove, too. So there's still plenty of good stuff near SLU.

Center Ice is gone, as is the latest in a string of breweries that inhabited the old Falstaff office building on Forest Park Parkway and Spring (Twisted Roots, Pappo's, 6 Row..). Real ones remember Buffalo Brewing next to Pappy's, too. Pappy's grew into that space after Buffalo left.

The industry is definitely struggling. Wellspent also probably suffers from sharing a market with a bunch of excellent (and some truly world class) breweries. When you're within a half hour of Side Project, Perennial, Narrow Gauge, Modern, The Civil Life, Bluewood, 4 Hands, UCBC, Rockwell, Millpond, and others, it's just hard to stand out. Wellspent would easily be the best brewery in Cincinnati in terms of quality. (Sigh.)

Lol, anecdotally, my girlfriend while I was at SLU was from Cincinnati and her dad loved Civil Life, so he'd hit them up whenever they visited her. I didn't know things were that dire in the land of the Reds for breweries.

What we lack in quality, we make up for in quantity. Plenty of places to go but none that I consider must-visits for beer nerds. Some good spaces for hanging out, though.

I basically only buy packaged beer when I'm back in St. Louis.

Center Ice would've made a lot more sense in a location closer to the Enterprise Center.

Hoosier Hammer from Wellspent is pretty great. They also made a popcorn kolsch over the summer that I really liked. Hopefully someone will keep it going!

Also, I had heard that the Foundry purchased the building that used to house Six Row and others. I'd love to see another brewery, or at least some sort of bar/restaurant, open there.

Only been in there a few times the last couple of summers (a friend's "work band" was playing their gigs on the patio) but I agree about Hoosier Hammer. It's my "go to". Hope they stay open and successful.
