  1. Tuesday with Travis was on today. Coach liked the effort against Houston. He said they were the most physical team they have played to date. It took a few minutes to adjust to the physical nature of Houston, but they figured it out. On the loss, Coach said "It's the offense, we had too many empty possessions." Danny Mac "how do you get over the hump?" Coach, "we have to get the offense better. Our defense is fine." What are the trend lines going up? Coach -"definitely our defense. Tremaine is coming along. He was locked in at Houston." On NCC 'They have good athletes. They will press us all game (uh oh) and change presses often. We have to take care of the ball." "They have a 6'8" center that could play anywhere in America." "This game is scarier (his word) than Houston or Florida State. Houston was a very emotional game and the team was drained both physically and mentally. Finals ended today (Tuesday) so prep has been minimal. We have to focus. NCC plays a tough schedule. They are used to playing teams like us. On injuries, both Dion and Ingvi likely won't play until perhaps the weekend. The team will disperse from Miami after the game on the 22nd and come back to STL for a 6 pm practice on the 26th. And the most important question from Danny Mac, "Do you do any Christmas shopping or do you let your wife do the shopping?" Coach "Oh my, I don't do much and if I do it is last minute. I'm lucky that she takes care of it."

  2. I'm going to push back on this a little bit. Perkins and Jimerson are scorers, absolutely. No question. Bucket getters. Jimerson is about as high-level a shooter as I can remember ever coming in to SLU, but has sneaky versatility. Perkins scores on all three levels and is playing with a ton of confidence at SWIC. Collins is not a scorer. He's an old-school pass-first floor general. He has almost preternatural PG skills, the way he sees the floor and moves the ball. He's one step ahead of the action. But he's limited as a scorer. He doesn't shoot in high volume, and though he's got a strong frame and plays with fearlessness, his size is a limitation when he goes to the basket. He has also said in interviews that he has no ego around getting points, and that he'd be happier scoring 0, with 25 assists. Hargrove is the man for ESL but when he played for Brad Beal Elite on the AAU circuit, he was more of a role player - finisher (high percentage, lower volume), rebounder, shot disruptor. I was pretty impressed with his unselfishness and willingness to do the dirty work while guys like Liddell, Moody, and McKinney scored more. Don't get me wrong; I think he's made progress as a shooter and he's one of the more exciting dunkers and finishers we've ever brought in - his potential is sky high - but I don't think I'd bill him as a scorer quite yet.

  3. We only had 3 upperclassmen playing vs a top 25 team at their place and nearly won....the future is bright.

  4. The biggest problem with the offense to this point has been Goodwin. While Bess has gone up in most offensive statistical categories, Goodwin has gone down - ppg, apg, ft% around 50%, 3-point % better than last year but still below 30%, plus turnovers are up. In order for this team to be special, Goodwin needs to raise his game the way Bess has. I also think the Wiley injury can't be underestimated either. We don't win the Seton Hall game without him. He was out for all or most of our three losses. A couple of timely threes in any of those games would have made a big difference.

  6. -the part of JGood's game that has me more perplexed is how he is getting beat off the dribble, that didn't happen last season to this frequency that I can recall -as to CAG, what the heck was he and the staff doing over the summer? I don't remember that he was hurt and couldn't get in shape. I know CFord has said CAG goes all out when in the game, an assessment I question, and someone on here wondered if CAG didn't know how big a jump it is from high school to our level, but I am shocked at the number of times he walks to the offensive end and is really huffing and puffing but I agree he could be really, really good and eventually make a lot of $$$$

  7. Just a few updates: Ground has been broken for the Element by Westin hotel on Forest Park Parkway. The Angad Hotel on Grand is open and looks really cool: https://cheddar.com/videos/the-angad-arts-hotel-lets-you-chose-a-room-based-on-your-mood. I want to check out the restaurant and rooftop deck. The Foundry and Armory projects are full speed ahead. It's been fun to view their progress on my way to and from work each day. Work has begun on the Steelcote Lofts. In other news, The Grove - SLU's neighbor to the southwest - is exploding right now. There is a ridiculous amount of construction either planned or underway. Cortex is booming as well.

  8. 2 types of teams don’t want elite consistent scorers. 1. Teams hoping that their coach gets fired. 2. NBA teams hoping to improve their draft lottery odds.

  9. What's your reason for this? Just a reminder here that we're 322nd in the country in scoring as of today. That's right around the 10th percentile nationally.

  10. Make that two, thanks to the nail-biting finish by the Hillsboro hawks. Mehlville at one point in the game held a 13 point lead. Hawks:58 Mehville:56 Game Notes: Mehlville was without one of their key players tonight, Lamontay Daughtery, due to his two technical fouls. (my guess, like 5 fouls against PW North) Mehlville started the game relatively strong. Leading the charge for the Panthers for the first half, was Dylan Branson. Branson played very consistent coast to coast basketball, and on transition. Bradford was not a big force in the first half, though he did really energize the Mehlville team, overall. Though, Mehlville had too many turnovers, of which include, throwing the ball way too far to Bradford. Branson and the Panthers trailed by a couple entering the half. Then, Mehlville started to go on a run of their own. Which, disturbed Hillsboro's balance until mid-way through the third quarter. Hillsboro regrouped the troops, and went on fire, from behind the arch. They were lead by Michael Brewer, the excellent playmaker, and shot creator. Mehlville was hesitating from the point that Hillsboro had a solid lead, though it was a tough battle between their forces. Mehlville was in pure desperation mode, for a while, when they trailed. Their shot selection was very poor, they gave the ball to Pruitt, sometimes and he wasn't really consistent. Branson leads the Panthers to a 2 point deficit. Then, Mehlville fouls #2 for Hillsboro. In the background of the play, Pruitt knocks down a Hillsboro player, into a Hillsboro cheerleader. Hillsboro fans are frustrated by this action and are saying their feelings. No tech was called on the play, though there was a really bad call by the officials earlier on Mehlville, that was clearly not a foul. So, I would consider that it was canceled out by it logistically. Both teams both had some troubles with dribbling and traveling. More dribbling violations for Hillsboro, and more travels for Mehlville. Bradford did shine for the Panthers, totaling 15 points. Branson with 23 points. Overall, it was a saddening defeat for a fan of Mehlville's program, though they could have won.

  11. He sure does elevate on his jumper...SLU will have lots of weapons so it will be hard for teams to key on him.

  12. I really liked what I saw from JG against Houston in this area. He took the ball to the hoop slowed down and stepped around the defender

  14. I can't stand the title of this thread, and 05 is correct that it reads like clickbait. I listen to almost no sports radio/discussion/etc. because most arguments are inane and a waste of my time, and perhaps the most egregious of these are label arguments (e.g. what constitutes an "elite" athlete). That said, I'll go ahead and take a crack at the premise here. I disagree that we're in a good situation because we don't have an "elite consistent scorer" (again, whatever "elite" means) for a few reasons: -We don't have consistent scorers, period. Bess is the closest thing we've got and has really worked to become a better scorer, but he's just well-rounded and solid. He's not a killer from the perimeter (although much improved), he's not super quick going to the basket, and he doesn't tend to pile up points as part of a big run. And let's face it, when he had the ball in his hands to tie it at the buzzer in Houston, he chucked up a panicky airball. We don't have the guy you feel a high level of confidence in when he has the ball in his hands at the end of the game. It's not a knock on Bess. It's just not who he is. Our next leading scorer, Isabell, is the opposite of consistent. We're not winning because we don't have that kind of big-time scorer, we're winning despite it. -We're winning with defense. Period. -Who wouldn't want to add an "elite consistent scorer" to this group? Can you imagine if we had a guy who could score on three levels and put up 20 a night? We'd be 10-0, easily. Instead, we've been grinding it out all season without any truly comfortable wins. -Yes, a team's fortunes could rise and fall with that go-to guy, who might have an off night or be shut down by another team's Javon Bess-type stopper. But again, this team is pretty solid in other ways - namely, defense - that mitigate such risk. And if that player draws a tough defensive assignment on a given night, it opens things up for everyone else. The way we've struggled to score this season, I don't think "lack of go-to scorer" is a notch in the positive column.
