Nice to have a coach that knows how he wants his teams to play, and recruits guys to fit that vision.  You’d think that would be a given at the D1 level, but we didn’t have it with either of our last two coaches.

Ford’s idea of coaching was to recruit the best players he could sell. I’m not sure he ever had in mind any schemes of how he would use them. A little strange considering he played for a very strategic coach, Pitino. No doubt he brought to SLU some real talent but how he used it was very disappointing.

I am still of the opinion that Ford recruited one guy to be the man --- the hero.  Marcus Smart.  Javon Bess.  Tremaine Isabel.  Jordan Goodwin.  Yuri Colllins.  If the offense scored early, fine.  If not, then it was this guy's responsibility to make it happen with under ten on the shot clock.  Collins was really not equipped to do this.  I am overly excited to watch Schertz' offense and try to mentally compare it to what used to be.

Yuri Collins wasn't recruited to be the man.  He was a lightly recruited point guard from a small private school whose role was to be the distributor.  He averaged about 5 ppg a game during the summer for Bradley Beal Elite and that's about what he averaged here his first two years.

But I agree that Coach Ford required someone to be "the man".  When Perkins got injured, Yuri was forced into that role.  And when Perkins never returned to form, he was forced into the role again.  It's not a role for which he was suited or recruited.  That's why it didn't work.

It's hard to say he recruited "one guy to be the man" and then list four people who played on the same team. Still, I agree that Ford was about getting elite talent. The Crews years were so thin and within 18 months we had French and Goodwin, both fringe top 100, Bess, and Gordon, who was top 50 when he signed. We'd be so athletic that we'd simply overwhelm the A-10 with bully ball. Ford is probably still coaching here if Cartare Gordon stayed and stayed healthy. The big 2019 class with Collins and Jimerson, Hargrove and Bell, with Perkins as a one-year Juco, was a great class for filling out the rotation. Nobody that Javonte would be an A-10 1st team level talent and 3 Star is right about Collins' rep. After 2019, nobody who came to SLU out of HS (except Nesbitt) could've been expected to start on an upper-level A-10 team.

My intent was not so much to identify WHO was the hero, but rather point out that Ford's offense seemed to be designed to rotate around the hero designation.  While there may have been multiple possible heroes on a given roster, the hierarchy always seemed to defer to the "one" .. the alpha dog if you will.  One guy to "go get you that bucket."  Sadly, I had forgotten about Perkins.  The trend preceded Ford as well .... can't forget the Jordair Jett senior year.

For me, the 22-23 season exposed all of Ford’s shortcomings as a coach. Even though Perkins was not the Perkins of old, that team was still loaded with talent. Ford could just not harness the talent and put in place the schemes to make the most of it. It was a frustrating season to watch them basically fall apart before our eyes.

@slu72:  On that team, Perkins was not the Perkins of old.  Therefore, the role of alpha-dog was vacant in my mind.  No one on that roster was equipped or talented enough to jump into the fray and assume the hero role.  Not Okoro, not Collins, not Pickett, not Jimerson, maybe Parker but he was a freshman learning the ropes to assume the hero role when Perkins left.  Ford's inability to adjust for these mishaps doomed him.

Given Schertz' definitions, I would think he has contingency plans in place but won't know for sure until he has to deal with the adversity of injury or something.  What happens when Avila (ankle) goes down for any extended time?  We shall see.

He was tween rock n hard place. If he didn't use him he'd be screwing him & the only way to see was when he was in & obviously wasn't the same, but he's still getting interest now so he's a great talent that got a career changing injury.

Does anyone know if Schertz is grooming any of our bigs to be a Robbie clone? No player is likely to be a Xerox Robbie 2, but since that role on the team is so key he must have a backup or 2 in mind.

My guess is that when Robbie needs a breather, Anya will move over to the Trigger, and Thames will come in as a second Swing.  I don't see Schertz buying into a like for like replacement rotation.  But we will all know on Monday!

Of course Maryville was an exhibition but the bigs on the roster were much better than the Jolly years

No one can fill that role this season if Robbie goes down.  I know that they are high on Pikaar's future, but he needs to put on muscle and get seasoning for two seasons until Robbie is out of eligibility (assuming he stays).  In a perfect world for Schertz, Pikaar will be groomed to be the new Robbie by his junior year (assuming he stays).

Seems to me that Hughes's designation as a shooter does not bode well for his playing time given this SLU team is heavy in Offense, but light on Defense.

Stu gave his rotation guess last night on his chat.  His starters are the Maryville starting 5, Avila, Swope, Jimerson, Anya and Johnson.  He thinks Thames is #6 right now and then "it's a mix of Hughes, Casey and Dotzler, as far as I an tell."

Schertz has said his rotation is not set in stone.  So #7 and #8 may change game to game.  Santa Clara goes 7', 6'10" along the front line.  Casey may get the nod in the first game due to his height and interior defense.

Stu also quoted Schertz as saying "he has told me it's better, for example, to give the 7th guy 22 minutes than to give him 15 minutes and another player 7.  However, he does think this is a much deeper team than he had last season."

The good news is we have a bad post reaction again, do with that what you will. There’s a poster here using burners to give themselves good posts, which is certainly a choice.
