Hiring a good coach can be instant turnaround. also Dennis gates is a coach we could have also hired. I was a Mizzou fan as a kid and into my 20’s but never cared for Norm, and couldn’t stand most of the other coaches they hired. I actually like Gates from what I’ve seen. The fact that Mizzou is relevant once again has to be considered when evaluating the state of the SLU program. This was a wasted opportunity to earn more local fan support in my opinion. This is your evidence that a Mid-Major coach can come in and win in a quick amount of time. I only became a true SLU fan with Douglass, Gray, and Bonner years….but this crap from SLU and the way Mizzou has turned it around is just rekindling the Tiger fan in me. dlarry Posted February 12, 2023 Share Posted February 12, 2023 Good coaching can beat Mizzou. They get out to these big leads early because teams are shell shocked and not use to the style. A good coach is able to regroup the troops at half time and make the necessary adjustments and out talented them in the second half. Tennesse should have done that tonight if not for two missed free throws. If Gates starts bringing in better talent that won’t happen and they will be tough. Pretty sure they’ve now beaten at least 5 teams that were ranked at the time of play, including #12 ISU and #6 Tennessee @ TN (poor @Schasz ) in the past week! Finishing 4th or worse every year in the A10 where an A10 tournament win is your ONLY chance at dancing is pretty duddy to me. Amazing what a new coach can do to a program. I mean we may not win the A10 with a new coach like Ford…oh wait he hasn’t. We may not finish first in the A10 with a new coach like Ford did…whoops, that didn’t happen either. Well? We may not win 4 in a row and make the dance as a 6th seed like Travis did (only because Isabell is out of eligibility). I hated watching Mizzou most seasons after Norm…and I didn’t even like him as a coach! But who had Gates on their wish list?? Shows there’s hope for SLU.
