Shaka headed to Wake?

Recommended Posts

Doesnt this happen every offseason? Wasnt Shaka goingto UCLA last year?

Yes.

Its the obvious downside of having a successful young coach; every time you have a good year the big schools are going to try to poach your guy and the best scenario is you have to give him a raise, while the worst is he leaves and screws up recruiting, continuity, etc.

There's a lot to be said for having a quality, older coach like Crews who is happy where he is and isn't going to use every season of success to either get a raise or jump to better things.

Shaka is from Madison. He could go to a school with a huge basketball budget. And he could go to another school where conference championships aren't expected! Sounds like a triple win for him.

Seriously, I doubt he leaves VCU. He has a good thing going and seems to be getting better on the recruiting trail. I think his system would play well at the NBE level as it isn't quite a power conference.

This ain't good if we are stuck here in the A10.

Shaka, love him or hate him, he has the star power to fill the Chaifetz even if we have a down year. Does bring credibility to the conference. He will be missed.

Well its great for us... could you imagine packing Chaifetz when Marquette and Shaka come to town?!? You think its big with VCU and Shaka, you just wait...

It depends on his contract if they had a chance to.

They wouldn't prevent him from communicating with other schools even if they could. It looks bad for the school; if he's already at the stage where he's open to outside discussion, then you're probably going to be looking for a new coach in the near future - and you don't want to take any action that might put you in a disadvantageous bargaining position. And, even if Shaka were to stay, barring him from outside communication is not going to make him happy, and may create a rift between him and the administration. And that's never a good thing.

Yikes, you make him sound like a Viagra commercial. "You've reached the age when giving up isn't who you are, this is the age of knowing how to make things happen."

There is also a lot to be said from a marketing aspect with a young, dynamic coach...or one that is seen as one of the best bball minds ever, albeit kind of crazy (RM). Milk toast doesn't get you very far from a "buzz" perspective.

Winning generates far more buzz than being "young and dynamic." There have been plenty of young dynamic coaches who generate no buzz. Shaka and Stevens generated buzz because they won and still win.

Perhaps neither young nor dynamic, but the edit works nonetheless.
