Zink
A high school friend of mine opened up the Stellar Hog, and it's quite good. He worked at Adam's for a bit before setting off on his own. It's got a real "third place" neighborhood pub kind of vibe. His brisket is outstanding, and they do a cheesy pork fries dish that is basically Americanized poutine.

Spoon-Balls
I was talking to a buddy of mine earlier today about how sad it is that this is the first start to a season with no Humphrey's. Does anyone have any updates on the building situation? Is that prick Bernie Squitieri going to sit on the property until he can sell it off for a fat stack of ca$h? After hearing about how he deceived the old owner with his "redevelopment plans" the whole situation still pisses me off. http://www.stltoday.com/business/columns/building-blocks/items-from-humphrey-s-the-beloved-bar-near-slu-listed/article_0d0d07eb-3e72-5621-86d0-29fda1c83451.html http://www.restaurantnews.com/superpreneur-will-bring-hot-new-pizza-concept-to-st-louis-area/ http://abcnews.go.com/Lifestyle/missouri-couple-shocked-trash-company-finds-lost-400000/story?id=37690676

The main drag out there (bordering the State University) is extraordinarily wide. When you ask the natives how come it is so wide they just shrug and say "that is where Sherman went through." Whatever is left behind using a General Sherman approach will probably be of little use for years, it will just be adding yet more blighted areas to the city. Nope, the Sherman burned earth approach is not advisable as something that would benefit the city. LOL as a Civil War buff, this is laughable from the standpoint of "this is what a true southerner will tell you." Now, Sherman's charges may have marched through Columbia up from Savannah, but Columbia was set ablaze, ironically, by Confederate Gen. and New Orleans native P.G.T. Beauregard; in fact, "Little Napoleon," as he was called, ordered the burning of thousands of bales of cotton on open city streets and his order was published in the Columbia newspaper on Feb 15, 1864. As the city descended into chaos and the Rebs withdrawing, Beauregard realized he had made a fatal flaw in the order and tried to reverse the decision, but it was too late. But I can see why Sherman is an easy target; Atlanta is skewered with little anecdotal references to his policies. History may be written by the victors, but if you spend any amount of time in the south, a lot of history is written from the perspective of the "victim," not the aggressor. It's like the Titanic museum in Belfast - they have t-shirts at the gift shop that say "H.M.S. Titanic - Built by Irishmen, Sunk by an Englishman." He doesn't take subsidies and tends to take on building that everyone else passes on because they aren't as cool as some other rehabs or conversions. The Mason Temple doesn't lack cool, but it will be interesting to see what the finished product looks like. I think his stuff tends to be meh because of the buildings he normally takes on. The best thing he has going for him is his projects actually get done.
