Yeah, but now they have to adjust to D1 rules. Definitely an adjustment for LU.

No doubt about that. My kid played at Lindenwood one night and after the game they rolled out a bunch of ping pong tables and about 25 Chinese dudes put on a clinic.

Well nothing would stop them from giving money under a different name to students just to get them in the fold for whatever.  Once they get the kid then they can pull the money as time goes by if necessary.

My bad. Lindenwood was one of the first colleges to focus on enrollment growth through sports. It seemed to work well and many similar institutions followed that path. It will be interesting to see if the D1 model will work.

All good. Lindenwood and Maryville should be case studies for SLU. Both for inspiration and cautionary tales.

Lindenwood was late to the game of growing enrollment through sports and nearly closed, but the President that ran Tarkio in to the ground did take the approach to new levels.

Looks like they willl be working Saturday on this, they need to finish the field on the west side, finish work on the fence, then mark the field. That’s the only obvious work left to do. The construction company sure is taking this down to the wire, which is like most construction companies. I guess worst case they move the game to Maryville, who has had their own field for years.

There is a SLU Faculty Senate Q&A, and this was one of the questions and answers this week:

QUESTION 100: What is being built on the south campus next to the track? Rumor has it that it is a field hockey field. Regardless of what it is, why hasn't this been announced?

Answer 100: From Athletics:  If you are familiar with Saint Louis University athletics, you know that not all sports compete or practice on campus. It is difficult to find on-campus space for sports facilities due to the size and location of the campus itself. Sports that are hosted on campus include baseball, basketball, soccer, swimming/diving, track and field, softball, and volleyball, whereas sports that host their home events off campus include cross country, tennis, and field hockey. However, this is about to change for the women of the SLU field hockey team.  Rather than the entire team having to accommodate the 30-minute drive to every practice and game, the commute will now be much shorter, as the only drive necessary is down Grand Boulevard.  President Fred Pestello and Athletic Director Chris May agreed on the installation of an on-campus field hockey pitch, expected to be ready for play before the start of the 2024 season.  Come to a game next week!!!!

Aside from the team and coaching staff, the change of location will also provide an easier commute for fans, especially SLU students. At the current game location in Maryland Heights, it is rare that the team has a student section cheering them on during games because many students do not have cars on campus and there is no transportation provided by the university to take students to and from the field hockey games. Having the field on the South campus will likely increase student attendance at home games since only the campus shuttle is required to get there. Here is a link to the story we shared with the SLU Community

It does seem like the only reason they said anything about it was the MMP broke the story on their podcast…

And thanks to @SluSignGuy for pointing this out. I’m glad this question found its way into the distinguished Faculty Senate, which usually only reserves it’s precious time on debating the most fundamental questions of human reality…

Thanks. The SLU/YouGov Poll comes out Thursday, so I hope it gets some attention.

They didn't really answer the question of why it wasn't announced.

I'm thrilled it's happening. The early photos look great. This is a life changer for the field hockey players and staff. Seems like a super positive story to sell that just isn't being told.

They really did a great job with the facility. There are important pieces that are needed including storage and shaded areas for teams between periods, this shouldn't be a major add over the off-season.

On thing I am a little concerned with is that you have to enter directly opposite where you're standing in pic two and there's really only one good way in or out. Obviously we're not hosting major crowds but if there was an emergency things could get a little squirrely.
