Recruiting - 2014

Recommended Posts

I saw CBC play at Chaminade this past winter and McCaw probably was the best player for CBC that night, but he was also bombing 3s early in the game. He definitely has a ton of length and was real disruptive defensively getting steals and forcing TOs in addition to hitting the 3. He also seemed to play with some cockiness. I thought CBC kind of backed down after they got a nice lead and Chaminade started to battle them which is surprising given that CBC was mostly upperclassmen and Chaminade had a lot of youth on the court. I came away questioning how Doby was a high level recruit. Jayson Tatum was definitely the best player on the court that night. Barnett was more comfortable on the perimeter shooting 3s and did not attack the paint as much as I expected given his size and the overall youth of Chaminade in the post. Granted he did hit a number of 3s, but he had a distinct size and athleticism advantage that he could not take advantage of. I had heard that their coaches had a real tough time getting consistent effort from their kids especially in practice (even getting them to show up at times) which is kind of pathetic considering the experience and success of McCormack. Those are my thoughts based on one game, so I really have not gone and seen the kids play.

-I was at a CBC at Chaminade game last season and came away thinking the top three and perhaps four players I would want in college were all wearing red

Sean O’Mara: Benet Academy, Lisle, IL - C: 6-9, 240. Offers: SLU, Murray State, Cornell, Brown, Tennessee Tech, Jacksonville, Gardner-Webb, Appalachian State, Stetson, Radford, Middle Tennessee, Georgia Southern. Interest: Mizzou, Butler, Charleston, Charlotte, UAB, Nevada, Buffalo, Charleston Southern. Latest (6/19): Interesting offer list. I guess we're in early on a guy we think has more potential than shows with his current list, and I'm guessing he's also a pretty solid student with two Ivy Leage offers. He's considered one of the fastest-rising players in the state of Georgia's class of 2014. On The Radar Hoops says: "Hunter showcases a great change of speed and high basketball IQ, he constantly gets a piece of the paint and pushes the tempo off the rebound. There's nothing new on that primer. In fact, it is outdated. It talks about a player that has already committed to another school.

Thanks. That is sort of what I expected. ESPN isn't a great place for recruiting info especially for non-BCS schools. I assumed the yeoman's work Pistol is doing here was bound to be superior.

See above for the new offer, Quadree Smith. VERY intriguing player. 6-7, 290. 13 rebounds/game as a junior and only 9 points/game. Has worked his butt off in strength and conditioning to make himself a strong D-I prospect after coming in well over 300 lbs. as a sophomore (averaged under 2 and 2 that season). He plays in the tough Washington Catholic Athletic Conference, with powers like DeMatha, Gonzaga, and Carroll. Some scouting blurbs:

@CoreyPegram: 2014 Quadree Smith has some of the best hands around. Uses his body so well and understands who he is

Team Takeover (@KSTeamTakeover) big man Quadree Smith averaged 7.5 PPG & 6.5 RPG at #EYBL Minneapolis #ManThePaint

@hatfieldsports: Like how Paul VI big man Quadree Smith holds his position & moves his feet on defense against guys longer than him …

A couple more players listed as having offers from SLU that aren't om SLU's VerbalCommits page, but are listed as having offers on JP Macura's page:

http://verbalcommits.com/players/j-p-macura

Mory Diane and Brandon Cheeks. Haven't heard these yet. When you click on their names, they list SLU as having "Interest only - no offer," so I'll add them to the interest list.

Just a quick question: how does one get an "offer" from an Ivy League university? It's my understanding they do not offer athletic scholarships. Do they get around it by offering academic scholarships?

You are correct, what they have done is tell the player there is an available spot on the roster if the player wants it.

If there is one thing in common about the IVYs is that they do not lack money. They may not give athletic scholarships, but if they want you for something, the money will be there. Once you are in, of course, you will have to deal with much tougher academic requirements, a student body that generally is more attuned to rowing than to basketball, and the fact that only in a blue moon you will ever never see play against a top level opponent.

I read an article recently saying that Ivy League schools have developed more generous financial aid procedures, especially for families with certain annual incomes. I don't remember actual numbers, but there were student-athletes that chose to attend Harvard at $5-10k a year or less, instead of accepting full athletic scholarships to other schools.

Ivy League coaches recruit players for significant sports who are also academically qualified to survive the difficult curriculum.

The athletes are not held to the same top end standards as other students, but the academic standards for athletes are still very, very high compared to most other NCAA D-1 schools.

There are absolutely no athletic scholarships given, but other funds are made available based on "need". But they do not throw money around for athletes, either.

One thing I would like to add about Ivy athletic scholarships is that the schools (and to some extent the athletes) do not look at them like most "fans" do. Many schools, including possibly all the Ivy schools, look at scholarships as a reward for some bit of excellence in the student and as a way of attracting students with that excellence to their institutions. Ivy league schools have lots of sports (including the aforementioned rowing) in order to attract good students. Fans unfortunately look at scholarships as an exchange and look at the student as what can they get out of them; the school gives the student something in exchange for the athletic powers and effort of the student. That is not wholly accurate and often leads to lack of perspective around transfers (every one is different but some times student-athletes are simply looking to be appreciated not used). Schools using athletics to recruit the best students is the ideal.

So, yes there are not "athletic scholarships" per se at Ivy institutions but the coaches do identify the "excellence" that gets them into the school which makes them eligible for a lot of other scholarship opportunities (particularly if they are low income and actually need the help). In this way athletes are no different than band kids, artists, high school entrepeneurs, actors, or writers. A friend did a huge study years ago looking at the ACT/SAT test scores and who was admitted across a large group of selective colleges. The athletes were a bit below the average in their scores but they were above the averages of "arts" admissions and the "legacies" (rich kids).

Maybe this is high class hyprocrisy and delusion but this is how I hear Ivy athletic and finance people talk (and I talk to them quite a bit). It is something to keep in mind as there is a fair bit of truth to it even in "competitive" sports.

The NCAA says the schools have to treat the athletes the same as the other non athletic students if they are getting any kind of non athletic aid. I believe that is why some of the ivy league schools have changed their financial aid contingent on financial ability to pay rules. This allows them to allow the student athlete into the school based more on need than tied to their GPA/test scores. The ability to get grants and and loans is pretty easy to take care of whatever expenses would still be left.
