Congrats to Porter Moser

Not counting his time at Army because you have to be elite to win there, Crews has made the NCAA, 7 times in 22 years. That's not bad but I want better. I don't expect it this coming year either but if we can reach some type of postseason, then Crews is leading us in the right direction.

No David King I am not saying any such a thing. I am saying that Crews holds his fate in his very own hands. He will remain our Head Coach or perhaps he will not depending on how well he manages to heal the team and lead it to an improved performance next season. I am supporting 3 star when he talks about the pretty yarns we are making in this thread about Porter as a messiah or sorts to come and save our team. This is good fiction, nothing else. Reality is that Crews will deal with next season the best way he can and will have to face consequences if we do not show a satisfactory level of improvement. What the consequences may be if he has another very bad season are up to the AD to decide. I hope this is clear now

I see. Fire him after next season then?

Sure there's a reason. Competition. There's about 60-70 well-financed mid major programs trying to do the same thing. It takes a combination of skill, hard work and a large dose of luck to get there. And you have to prove it over a long period of time.

Probably the key to long-term success of a mid-major basketball program is the commitment of the school's administration. Butler, and Xavier are good examples of this. Both have had numerous coaches, and they still consistently field top 25 teams. Evidently, they are also skilled at evaluating coaching talent.

Anyone who has watched, and cheered the team since back in the Ron Ekker days, like I have, knows that the SLU administration has definitely stepped up there commitment to Billiken's basketball over the last 6 years, or so. New, state-of-the-art facilities, and a $1million/yr HOF coach are a pretty good indication that they are serious about having a consistently winning program. I am optimistic hat they will not settle for mediocrity. Let's just hope they are also good talent evaluators.

You guys are great. MB, especially. He did a great job at Evansville... 25 years ago. Holy cow. He can obviously coach and the program is not lost with him at the helm, but good lord the hand-wringing when you mention just how mediocre he's been relative to everyone else out there on our level, or more importantly, higher, which is where everyone aspires to be be a la Xavier, Butler etc. is embarrassing. Honk all you want for coach Crews, but it's the next coach that will decide the future of the program and some of us just wouldn't mind looking for that guy as soon as possible. Coach Crews is fine. We get it. What's the biggest game he's ever won? Confident he's the one that can get over the hurdle and into the Sweet 16?

I will never understand our fanbase's acquiescence to mediocrity. Nice, likeable, respectable, morally sound, engaging individuals can, in fact, be mediocre at coaching. We fired Soderberg after a 20 win season (his best) because, as a program and school, we decided mediocrity wasn't acceptable anymore. In my opinion, the jury is still out with Crews...but his track record isn't too encouraging. The question is, would Moser, or any potential coach for that matter, be someone who could lead us out of mediocrity?

Take a poll of all season ticketholders. Ask them each, "Are you okay with the Billikens being a mediocre program?" If you can find even 10% that say that I will write you a big check. You and I both know I don't even need to find my checkbook. People who like Crews as coach don't like him because they want the program to be mediocre; they like him as coach because they think he can get the job done and lead us to high performance including the tournament. You may disagree with the belief that Crews can do that, but please quit implying that someone who likes Jim Crews as coach of the Billikens wants a mediocre program or acquiesces to mediocrity. That is simply not true and it gets frustrating to hear people imply that, in different ways, over and over.

So are we going after porter now?

He's already been hired. They are just waiting to make the announcement after the NCAA championship so that it doesn't take away from the excitement this will cause in recruiting circles...

Then it may be a long four years for you. Crews is in the 2nd year of a 5 year contract. Chris May hasn't shown himself to be a risk taker. Our deep pocketed boosters don't have a reputation for being particularly demanding. If this past season was really an aberration and Crews can right the ship, he isn't going anywhere. It's not about honking for Crews. It's about being realistic.

Here's even worse news for you. If Crews can catch a break on the recruiting trail and get us to the tournament in the next 2 years, our conservative AD may even decide to extend him.

Nope, any adverse action to be taken after next season is entirely in the hands of the AD. There is no certainty about how next year will end and or what action the AD will take if there is no significant performance improvement.

Let me clarify my position further. Nice people don't always make good coaches. I like Crews. I always have. But I'm just not sure he is the guy able to get us to the next level. I really don't know.

The mediocrity comment was directed moreso to the notion that Porter Moser should be considered in the running for our next coach. There are more than a few people who think that is a distinct possibility.

BUT, I do think there MAY be somewhat of a disconnect between what SOME season ticket holders/donors think is needed to raise the profile of the program and what it actually takes.

You could poll season ticket holders from ANY school and of course they would say that they aspire to be better than mediocre.

Those are fair statements and I agree.

I would hope and expect Coach Crews to get this crop of freshmen to the dance in both '17 and '18, if he's around. Doesn't seem too lofty. He's 60+ years old and has already 'retired' from coaching before.. I don't think a retirement/buy-out would be anything out of the ordinary. An extension at this point is a little comical, regardless of the discussion.

-not to go off topic in this thread, but when is the last time this was done? has it ever? other than the lunches CMay had a few years ago how does the ADept get the thoughts of season ticket holders? perhaps I am forgetting an effort

Props to Porter. Chicago's first college post-season tournament champion in 52 years. Just an aside here, Loyola's '63 championship was first national championship game I remember watching. Very exciting game with a great OT finish. Believe Loyola's starters played all 45 minutes.

Harkness--Bell--Rousch---?.---?.. Also one of the first I remember.

Les "Big Game" Hunter, Jerry Harkness, Vic Rouse, Jack Egan, and Ron Miller.
