Vermont from planted arse in couch in MD .....

.... another win. Take it and run. Kind of scary in a way. They mirror us in terms of youth but had two regular kids out hurt and arguably their best player out on a red-shirt year. Might have been tough but even a three point win at home I'll take. Seemed to be the case of two young teams, somewhat inept from the overall skill point, going toe-to-toe until on me was left standing. You have to play until the final buzzer. Ask Syracuse. Up 8 with 49 seconds to go and then outscored 11 to 2 to close it never really imperiled us but did make it interesting. Need to know the game is not over until its over.

Vermont had moxie, I'll give them that. O'Day did very well. And nobody seemed to be able to stay in front of Bell-Haynes. For those wanting JM in there for "defensive" presence and shotblocking, I didn't see Bell-Haynes worried about him being at the end of the scoring tunnel. Seemed almost no impediment at all. But those are all trifles when you win. I think this team beats us if healthy. Nice program going on up there. Weren't we recruitng the Spiedel kid going there next year too? And McRoberts brother there as well. Don't know what that means but name recognition is good enough. Hope we keep them on the schedule in coming years.

As for the comment in the GDT about this team trending down, I don't know. I am not that impressed with a three-point home win over these guys but the game did show spots where we seem to be getting better. I'd offer the same assessmen tin a loss. Yea, we clocked them on the boards but they weren't much to write home about there. We seemed to be better athletically at the two and three where Yacoubou and Yarbrough had their way on the offensive board end. But a combined 8-for-27 with 25 of those shots mostly bunnies, well, improvement can be had. Also for the thread about the MY comment --- I agree that maybe having a "no FR talk to the press rule" might be a good thing. I don't know what was meant by it and I don't want any explanations but it can be equally divisive as well as realistic -- it can be both good and bad. We shall see. The good thing is his game does not demonstrate any selfishness so I think MY will be fine.

Why do we miss so many short ones? I used to think DE missed a lot because he hurried his shot down there. He always felt (IMHO) that he was this close to being blocked so he hurried it. Conklin showed us his senior year that inside scoring did not mean super hops so we know it can be done. I think MY needs to slow it down some and that will come from experience. I think he is more suited to the interior beast mode than DE ever was and he was a good one. MY appears to have the needed skills and size to be the three-spot slasher I've longed for in this program. If you cover him with a four, he can go around. If you cover him small, he can post up and make you pay. The sky's the limit for him right now.

AG continues to impress. He had that nice five point run and didn't miss a shot. But he seems to be more Rob Loe -- a tall Euro-four. He will never be the interior, traditional post player we know in the American basketball circles. But that's okay.

The third star of the game woudl be MC who came back with nine points after his last, career-high effort. He is a heady and smart ballplayer. I like that.

Trending up: MY, AG, MC

Holding pattern: AY, AM, JM.

Neither: RA and TL.

Trending down still: DR, BJ, MR, MB.

Yes, Ash had another ten but he was clearly a man among boys out there but didn't finish as well as he could have. But he keeps going. AM had that five or seven point burst but he coulsn't stay with Bell-Haynes at all. Maybe it was the migraine. None of our guards coudl seem to stay in front of thekid so bashing just AM for it is not fair. Jm is JM .... one sho tmade, four rebounds, three fouls. Status quo. I know someone said they liked what TL was doing and while I agree (he is like MC out there) he needs to become relvant on the socre sheet to pump up hi svolume more. I want to believe RA can be just as effective on th eblkocks as MY but it remains to be seen. Lots of OJT this year.

Yes, DR made a threee and then worked a foul on the next three but he still appears a lkittel bit of a flat tire out there. Bj and MR each got four minutes. Not a lot to write home about. Jolly looks extremely weak, which aggravates ne noire when you consider him actually a sophomore what with his year of prep school. MB is indeed a good passer but needs lots of work elsewhere. But that's what this season is all about.

Crews has to coach this year so him being more demonstrative should be expected. I still do not like the "ball movement offense" we seem to like to employ. Pass-pass-pass until oops! five seconds on the shot clock with the ball in Gillmann or Jolly's hands. Workign hard for a shot i sokay. being deliberative for that shot is okay. But when we going to get som enice uncontrsted layups? Because I am still not understanding who can stop an dpop from the 10 to 17 foot range and make it with some consistency.

One more game in the OOC season. I was hoping a lot more would be seen from RA and TL by now. Two freshmen are keepers for sure but much like few have distinguished on the positive side, few have done so on the negative side. MB, MR and DR all show serious upside. BJ seems relatively weak right now. Been an interesting ride to date.

Still having fun. The weather here is beautiful; wish you were. Can't wait.

I don't remember Loe playing this well down low at the beginning of his freshman year at all. He wanted to stay outside and chuck up threes all day long, which was nice when they went down (the first 10 minutes of the UGA game comes to mind). Gillmann isn't Hakeem Olajuwon but he already looks pretty good under the basket to me.

I don't think this board gives Roby enough credit for the defense he plays. I concentrated on watching his on the ball defense yesterday and it was very good. I'm sure Crews is not playing him because of his offense. I would reverse that arrow .I thought he was solid yesterday.

+1 Of the freshmen, only Malik the Monster has more minutes this year so far....

Although Vermont was short-handed yesterday, it's still a solid win over a decent team. I think we're seeing signs of this team starting to turn it around. I was down early in the season (and we clearly weren't any good), but I always stood by the idea that we'd be a different team by conference season. I think the rotation is being cut down a bit (Jolly and Reynolds are playing, but not many minutes) and we're seeing more continuity and getting into more of a defensive and offensive rhythm.

I agree, though the time is going to come where he has to start contributing on the offensive end

I project Roby to be a nice glue guy during his career and that's ok. Considering that is what he was in high school, no reason to expect more than that. Defense is how he is going to earn his PT, trying to slow down the opponents best scoring 2 or 3. He has a decent 3-point shot and is another guy who is a pretty good passer. Currently not very developed at creating his own shot or finishing at the rim and ball handling needs work, but all that can develop over time. I view him as like the Femi John we only saw glimpses of. Some people used to fawn over Luke Meyer. Consider Roby to grow into filling a similar role, except the main difference is DR will be more athletic, but will never be the gym rat or coach on the floor Luke was ;)

BJ's deficiencies at this stage are pretty clear. He looks and plays confused. Thought he'd be a mile in front of AG but it's the reverse. AG is turning out to be a major surprise.

Can't figure out where MR fits in. The kid was a warrior in that one game and basically won it for us. Anyone got thoughts on what's limiting his minutes? Is it an issue w/ his D? His O? I'll agree DR's probably playing because of his D, but is he that much further along than MR. MR doesn't seem to be a kid w/ an attitude problem or the type who just doesn't get it. A mystery, since his minutes have declined ever since NCAT game.

MR. Minutes have to be cut somwhere. His offense is pretty much a one trick pony, drive the middle, jump into the defender and get fouled. I love his quickness but he needs to expand his game. Who's your backup point? Miles or Marcus? IMO the reason we are playing better is the rotation is being cut, and we will be better the more it's cut.

I agree with you about Roby...but once upon a time some people on here thought Jordair Jett would be a nice glue guy. Hopefully similar development will ensue.

It seems like the movie Hoisers...must pass at least 5 times before shooting........Lacone looks like he wants to shoot but stops becaquse he is thinking he hasn't passed it enough yet.

Shoot it when wide open!!!!!

We would love to keep SLU on our schedule. Just don't come up too late in the year - the team may want to bring their snowboards & hockey skates! These 2 teams are going in the right direction for sure and getting solid mid-majors to Burlington is tough for us but the Billikens are more than welcome. We do have a Speidl coming in next year and we should have our starting point guard back after a RS year. Good luck this year

We go to St. Bonaventure, so that shouldn't be too much of a concern.

Yes the Bonnies are right in the snow belt in western NY. Our problem is our facility is a gym. It is bleacher seating for 3300 people. Many good mid-majors don't want to travel to us. We have been getting the Ivy's ( Harvard & Yale ) to come north as of late and St Josephs also. The crowd is 1 row from the teams, we are right on top of the game and it is very loud when UVM is rolling ( think of the movie Hoosiers). Vermont is a tough out in their place. That and lack of a real gate revenue keeps many OOC programs away
